Diane Kirke's Carrd
Golden Age AU for Peter, @iustusrex.
Another Narnian midsummer celebration had come to an end, the finale of course being their famous tourney. Though she noted that there were some competitors who would be going home with more than just a scratch, it didn't leave both Edmund and Peter without any either. Diane was already in his chambers waiting with the salve and bandages to clean any that were underneath the chainmail and tunic. She sat on the small chest that was on the front of the bed as she waited for him to arrive, turning to make sure everything was laid out and within easy reach.
"I don't know if that'd be possible, but if it is, I would want it to be that way. I don't even know if my parents can come here. I hope they can." He said, smiled at her.
"Mum will definitely be shocked by it all. Dad too."
"I think both of our parents meeting the other on the wedding day might come as a shock to all of them. But I also think that they would be happy too. That we finally found someone to call ours."
She smiled back, nuzzling the crook of his neck.
"Mum will be surprised, but happy. Dad may be more so, but they'll love you as if you were their daughter. Same way they love us." He said, smiling at her.
"I know they will love you, because I do."
She looked up at him and smiled widely, leaning down to kiss him softly. "I love you so much my darling." She said, running her fingers through his hair.
"I have no doubt our families will be ecstatic. With both the ceremony itself and us getting married."
"I love you. So much." He said, leaning his head against her shoulder.
"They definitely will, because, it's our day, we can share it with them, I hope. They'll love it. I can't wait for it."
"I know Susan and Lucy will be the maids of honor. I can't have one be one and not the other. Maybe I'll see if one of my faun friends want to be the ring bearer. Or perhaps one of the bears we have. Though I think a faun would be much less shocking to everyone else." She chuckled softly as she held him close.
The maid had knocked on their door before walking in. She had a tray that carried what they had for dinner, pheasant with gravy and bread. Along with a bottle of wine and strawberries with chocolate sauce.
"Of course they will. Both should be, because that's only fair, to them. They've been excited for this for years, I'm certain of it." He said, smiling.
"That smells amazing, thank you." He said, watching the food.
She smiled, nodding as she grabbed one of the plates and a fork, starting to eat some of the venison. "They have. I know granddad would've had potential suitors duel me back in our world once I was old enough. Though I think if he knew I picked you, he would be happy." She rested her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes.
"I'm sure he would've arranged a duel or two, but, I'm hoping he'd approve of me, even if he barely knows me." He said, helping himself to some of the pheasant.
"I'm sure you reminded him of a younger version of himself. Least what he got. Though, he was an only child so I suppose that's one of the two big differences. The other being the culture he grew up in." She said as she took another bite of the venison before she opened a bottle of wine, making sure it wasn't on the bedding before pouring them both a glass.
"I suppose growing up here is very different from.. well, anywhere. It's a whole different world." He said, and took a sip of the wine.
"It's very different from England, it'd be a bit of a shock to return, don't you think? It... I don't know if it would feel like home if we ever return."
"It might take some time for it to feel like home again if we were to return. Especially when it comes to you and the others. You were sent to my granddad's for safety. But I agree it would be different." She closed her eyes, taking a sip of her wine.
"I often wonder how much time has passed there as opposed to how much time has passed here."
"I don't think most girls my age, at home, do much more than perhaps, giggle, in groups. I don't know why, it's a mystery to me, even with sisters, I don't understand them 90% of the time." He said, with a small smile. "You're not like most girls."
She couldn't help but feel a blush spread across her cheeks as she looked over at him. "Really, I am?" She tilted her head to the side slightly as she took another sip of her wine. "My granddad did always say I was rather mature for my age. I don't know if it was what I'd been through, losing both of my parents, that made that so, or if it was his stories about Narnia and being partially raised by Macready herself."
"You always were different than them. In a good way." He said, smiling at her.
"I don't know either, but you are special. You've always been." He said, holding out a strawberry for her to take. "I felt like I got older when the war began. Like I had to grow up."
She nodded, taking a bite of the strawberry and looked over at him. "You had to watch your siblings. Even Susan, though she's not that much younger than you. If I were the eldest I would've been the same. Regardless of having Mrs. Macready and my granddad to help out."
"We were all children. With Dad gone.. I felt, and feel, responsible for them, even now. Like it is my job to keep them safe." He said, then ate the rest of the strawberry.
"I think Ed hated it the most, with how he reacted."
"I don't blame him though. He seemed particularly close with your dad. The sudden change must have been rather hurtful in his eyes. But look at how much he's changed since." She took another sip of her wine before eating some of the pheasant.
"Just as you have. You've grown into a kind and handsome man. One I'm lucky to call my own."
"They were. Are. He's grown up, but sometimes, I wonder if he misses home too. I suspect he does, but I haven't asked him. Even if he has changed." He said, eating some of his food.
"We all grew up." He said, smiling shyly at the compliment, drank some more of the wine.
"But you were handsome when you were younger too. Cherub cheeks and light eyes. Both grew into a pair of chiseled cheekbones and jawline. Your eyes seemed to grow brighter as you aged. Like the finest wine in all of Narnia." Now she was seeing where her granddad and tutors said she should be a writer, a poet even.
"It's been a while since then. Some days it feels like it's been forever, and others, like it's no time at all." Peter said, looking at her. "You think so?" He asked, smiling brightly.
She nodded as she looked over at him. "I do yes. That's true. There are somedays where I feel like the young girl who came across Narnia all those years ago to take her part in the prophecy. Little did I know that prophecy would lead me to you."
"I didn't even know what the prophecy was then, but I was definitely supposed to take my part in it." Peter said, smiled slightly.
"We were all so young, and I know I thought I was grown up, but I really wasn't."
"Sometimes we like to think we're bigger than the whole world. But we're always reminded we're a small part of it. Whether here in Narnia or back home in our world." She took another strawberry, taking a bite and rested her head on his shoulder as she looked up at him.
"But in those smaller worlds we all have our own big parts to play. If that makes any sense."

The young queen had taken on the task that both the Beavers had advised against but once word of humans other than her had entered Narnia got to Jadis and her army, war would surely ensue. She became a double agent for Aslan, working in the lie that the Narnians weren't treating her the way she should be treated, since becoming queen. Not heeding her warnings when it came to changes in the night sky. Which in the beginning, she and Orieus didn't always see head to head. So there had been some truth.
Diane tilted her head when she saw the boy get tossed into the cell next to her. The girl's hair disheveled and out of the plait from earlier that day when everything changed for her. Maugrim had sniffed her out and called her bluff. Which landed in a slap from Jadis herself, her ring leaving a cut on her lower lip. She was shivering, the coat she was given had been taken away as part of her punishment.
He kept his eyes closed, moving closer, and ended up falling asleep in seconds, feeling relatively safe, his head against her shoulder rather than on the pillow.
She smiled softly, resting her head on top of his as she closed her eyes, slowly falling asleep. She wrapped her arms around him and rubbed his gently. She would keep him safe any way she could. That much she knew.
He didn't sleep peacefully, mumbling quietly in his sleep, clinging to her without realizing it. He still felt safe, and he was relieved not to be alone.
She pulled the blanket up and wrapped it around him as she continued to rub his arm. She leaned up, kissing the top of his head before resting hers on his shoulder.
"You're safe, you're at Aslan's camp. You're not there anymore."
He stirred, waking up, sat up straight, breathing heavily, trying to remember where he was, looking panicked, not realizing where he was at first.
She sleepily rubbed her eyes before turning onto her side that faced him. "Ed, you're alright. It's just me."
Diane said as she sat up and looked over at him. She ran her fingers through his hair comfortingly as she rubbed his back with her other hand.
He tried to move away, his eyes wide, panicked, not calming down. "Let me go." He mumbled, then seemed to realize.
"I.. Didn't mean to wake you." He said, not moving closer.
"It's alright. I know you didn't mean to. But if you have any others, don't be afraid to wake me." She said as she looked over at him, still running her fingers through his hair.
"You're safe here."
He took a deep, shaky breath, closed his eyes, not saying anything in response. He needed a moment, wanted to go outside, but didn't dare to.
"Nowhere is safe."
"Aslan helps make sure we're safe. She won't get to you. Your siblings and I will make sure of it. I'll make sure she sees her end at the tip of my sword should it come down to that during the battle. But I promise, I'm not going to hurt you, my future king, I'm only here to help in anyway that is."
She tilted her head to the side slightly.
"I don't know... Future king? Your... future king?" He asked, moving to pull his legs up against his chest, curling up, not looking at her at all. "I don't feel safe."
She frowned, nodding as she moved away, reaching into the small chest at the foot of her bed and grabbed another blanket, wrapping it around her before she moved to sit in front of him. She didn't think he would be the most stubborn when it came to accepting his part in the prophecy. The others seemed to have fallen into their parts rather naturally.
Edmund closed his eyes, curling up more, anxious, and stressed by his own nightmares, picking at the edge of the blanket. "I'm not much of a king right now, if I'll ever be. If you want to find someone else, I wouldn't blame you."
"But the fact that you say that, means that you're ready to become one. You were always meant to be a king, the stars deemed it so when they wrote youe prophecy. If you don't see it now that's okay. But I'm here to help you see it."
"I am?" He asked, looking right at her. He didn't see it, and wasn't sure what he believed, but if there, perhaps, was any truth to it, she might let him know. Maybe even convince him.
She nodded. "You are. Those who don't see themselves in charge but have the capability to be in such a position are the ones perfect for the role. If I'm wrong, tell me. But I think that describes you. Despite your downfall, you've learned from it."
"I don't know if I have the capability. Do you think I do?" He asked, hesitantly, still keeping eye contact.
"What have I learned? Tell me."
"I do think you have the capability. Even the greatest kings had weaknesses they overcame. Do you know the legend of Arthur and Merlin?" She asked, tilting her head to the side slightly.
"You've learned that you can be redeemed. That messing up doesn't mean the end of life."
Edmund nodded. "I do, but what does it have to do with anything? I'm not like either of them." He said, leaning back, looking down at the blanket.
"Maybe. But.. I don't have anything I can help you with. I don't have magic, like Merlin. I don't have courage like King Arthur either.."
"Merlin was Arthur's advisor, during a time where if his secret magic was known, he would immediately have been executed. Even after knowing, Arthur kept him around because he trusted him. I feel there were doubts from both of them. But both Merlin and Arthur worked together. No matter how big, small, or unknown their enemies were." She looked over at him and smiled softly.
"You have courage deep down in you. I know you do."
"They're braver than I'll ever be." He said, looking at her. "But, Arthur had Merlin. And the knights. He wasn't alone." He continued, remembering the stories well.
"I'm not as brave as them, and I'll never be." He said, with a shrug. "Very deep down, maybe."
"You don't know that. You have your siblings and you have me." She said as she looked over at him. "You also have an army that's being formed as we speak. That army is for the four of you to help you defeat Jadis and her army. Even after the war you won't be getting rid of me that easily." She said, smiling softly as she tilted her head to the side slightly.

All Diane had left was an internship. So she took a research course for theatre, along with managing to get an internship at the Globe. But to keep her legacy status and have her tuition paid for by the university, she had to remain full time. So, she decided to take an intro to law course. While what laws she knew how to handle were Narnian related, she could translate them into modern day laws, or at the very least relate her experiences to scenarios without looking odd.
She wanted to take Leo but she didn't think that it would go over well, so she left him at the flat and drove to the campus. Walking in, she sat down in the middle but not towards the front. Pulling out her notebook she opened it to the page from the last class, writing the date after drawing a line.
"They'd not be going down well these days, no. But they're old, so it's a different era." He said, looking over at her. "Are we walking over there? Currently, my car is a piece of crap and has decided to not work with me. I'm reliving my pre-license days, with a bike." He said, grinning slightly, but not quite thinking it was that bad.
"We can walk or I can drive. My car has a small bike rack so you can attach your bike to the top that way you don't have to come back for it. I had to park a little further from where I usually do today. But it's still not that far away."
"Yeah, I can go get it, it's not far away. It's a temporary solution, but hey, it hasn't let me down yet. I'm going to get my car fixed, but for now, it's a bike for me. Drive might be good, 'cause I usually walk or bike, these days."
"Sometimes I'll take the train if I really feel like cutting down on using my car. I live closer to the center of the city otherwise I would walk more often. But mostly it's either I drive or take the train. However, I do walk everywhere on campus. Sometimes I think of getting a scooter though and cutting that time in half."
"I do that sometimes, but studies take up a lot of my time, so I can't always take the train, so bike it is. Scooter would be a better idea, I think, but, again, studies. You know, I don't have time to work, because, it's quite intense." He said, searching through his bag for his key.
"Really?" She tilted her head to the side slightly as she looked over at him. "Are you sure there isn't anything I can do to help you with your studies? Even though we aren't the same major? I can create a jeopardy sort of game with flashcards or do like kahoot online."
"Yeah, it's intense. I won't turn down help, might make it more fun at least, because it could use that. It can get a bit boring to just... read away." He said, grabbing his key.
"I love a good game though, it's a fun challenge."
"I think that's why I chose theatre. I would've picked law or history otherwise. But I would just get bored and not be able to focus after a while. But with theatre, a lot of my assignments are projects and it just works."
"I like law, but it can get rather overwhelming, when it all piles up. I'm focused, most of the time, but, you know, when there's essays, there's this, that, it can get a bit much, even for me."
She nodded in understanding. "Whenever I did have an essay, usually it would be a reflection of a show I just watched, and I knew ahead of time, I would write what I could, the summary in my own words, outline what I would put for the body, use questions I can easily restate. Though, I suppose it isn't so easy when it comes to law."
"It's not that easy with law, unfortunately, but I like it, anyway. Even if it's not an easy major, it's fun. Interesting. I wouldn't trade it for something else." He said, smiled slightly.
"It takes a specific person to be able to study law in order to bring justice to those who ask for it or to serve it to those who've wronged another. Law itself is complicated. However, especially because you babe to sometimes separate ethics from fact. I don't think I would be able to stop myself from walking in my client's shoes. Even on the stand."
"It is. It can be complicated, but it is fascinating. As stressful as studying it can be, I love it, and I like to believe I'll be good at it, even if I haven't tried it out for real yet."
She nodded as she looked over at him. "I feel you'll be good at law. You seemed to have a knack for it just from looking at your notes. Which are by far more organized than mine."
"I hope so, my notes have always looked like that, organized by topic, date, and important things are highlighted. Like, highlighters are my best advice to anyone. Makes it easier to find things."
"My notes are scribbles with doodles all across the page. But the doodling process helps me to maintain more information, and I just end up summarizing everything. It might seem annoying to most professors. But those I've had haven't seemed to mind it."
"Each person have their way of writing notes, mine's neat, yours is doodling. If it works, it's not bad. I just like my notes neat and simple, to easily find what I'm looking for." He said, smiled slightly.
"We should get to that coffee shop before it gets super busy again. I don't want to make it too much more work for your brother. If it gets as busy as the shop I work at on the weekends, then in a few hours it'll be teenagers who want the second cup against their mother's judgement."
"Yeah. He'll hate us if we come in during the busiest hour, when the teens come on in, asking for some kind of trendy drink, preferably with lots of caffeine in it."
"If it's after nine and I'm still working, I'll tell them try an herbal drink instead. Otherwise I'll refuse their services. The manager has told me that's been the policy for years. He doesn't want angry mums calling the next day saying their kid missed the bus or train to school because they slept in due to being up way too late."
"I don't doubt Ed tries to convince them. Either that or he's given up completely, and just hands it over." He said, shrugged. "Though, I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it without caffeine, or with less caffeine. He's a pro at making these things."
She nodded and smiled. "If they want the fizz I make it with sprite or fanta or something that has just a bit of sugar. But nothing outrageous and caffeine free. That way, the mom is happy and the kids are happy."

Prince was not, and would never be, a title that Enjolras, despite being born into it, was comfortable with.
It wasn't his favorite thing to be treated as royalty, regardless of the fact that that's what he was. 'Your Highness.' No, he was not fond of that, and because of that, he had decided to at least try to find some way out of it.
Not today, however. Today, he was meeting the Queen, Diane, he believed her name was, but he had only met her once.
"I think a pony will be great. I find that my horse is quite clear in what he likes, and more obviously, dislikes. He's not tolerant of other riders, for example. He doesn't talk, but he 'talks' with his body. It's his language. If you listen, they talk. It's all about understanding it." He said, looking up.
She nodded in agreement. "That's how my horse is at home. Even if he still thinks be can buck around with me holding on. But he knows my strength and I know he's just showing off his skill. But if my house aid were to rein him in ro use him as a coach horse, he'd kick and fight. That's why there's Orlando and Midnight."
"I've hit the ground a few times, but it's all just him deciding he's had enough. Horses can be like that. Stubborn, or loving, or both. Took a while to get him to agree to Willow." He said, smiled slightly.
"I don't have to worry about him getting stolen at least.."
"I learned from watching the house staff we had at my granddad's not to stand too close if we are standing behind a horse. Mrs. Macready took a big fall. But she surprisingly healed well and was on her feet after a few weeks. Thankfully there wasn't any brain damage. Julius here is as kind as can be. He'll even lower his front half so Willow could get on easier."
“I got that repeated over and over from one of our stable hands, and it stuck. Never been kicked by one, luckily. Despite my current horse having quite the temper, but he’s more prone to biting. I know it, and I’ve usually managed to avoid it, but he’s not that friendly at first. He’s never bitten me, or even tried to, but he has bitten my father. Can’t blame him. Julius sounds nice, so is mine, even if he’s picky with who he likes, and doesn’t. Who’s Mrs. Macready? I don’t think I’ve met her.” He said, looking at her.
“I wouldn’t mind meeting Julius, and I have no doubt Willow will love him.”
"She doesn't live with us here in Narnia. She lives with my granddad in the world we're from. She helps around the house when we need the extra help. Since granddad is getting older there are things he can't exactly do like he used to. Like cooking. He used to be the best, at least I felt so, when I was younger. But he nearly set the kitchen on fire trying to bake bread once." She said, chuckling softly.
"You both can meet him. He likes to try and take snacks out of hands. I don't know if he's learned that from Ed or that was just his nature."
"Oh. We have those too, but more than one. It's a big castle. I suppose you have them here too? Where are you from? I've never heard about your world. If you're not careful with fire, accidents can happen, your grandfather should know that, shouldn't he?" He asked, genuinely curious about her world. His world was this, and it was the only world he knew.
"A treat loving horse I take it. I have one too. He's especially fond of apples, and will break out to get them from time to time. It's always a sight, and quite funny to see."
"Well we're from a country in our world called England. I used to live in a city called London until I was ten. That was when I moved into my granddad's full time. We do have house staff. They even have a section here at the palace to call their own." She nodded.
"Julius loves apples and carrots. He loves alfalfa hay too. Thankfully he doesn't break out to get the apples. But at harvest time, he will try to ruin the hay bales to get a snack."
"I've never even heard of that, but don't you miss it?" He asked, looking at Willow.
"We have house staff too, and if I'm being honest with you, I have never liked it. I don't like being treated as if I'm somehow their superior, and at the same time like I'm a small child." He said, sighed softly
"Mine does. Well, while I do have more horses, this one's my favorite. Jet black, stallion, as black as the night, and he's strong, and fast. Reliable. I think Julius sounds like a great horse."
"There are times I do. But our world was at war. Not to mention I've been here for seventeen years. Switching back to a world with norms that I haven't had to use in such a long time would be hard. Not to mention, I don't know if we'd stay adults or be kids all over again. It's hard in our world to have any say, or rather we don't have the majority of the say."
"You came here as a child? How? I was born here, and as my parents only son, my life was planned out before I even existed. In detail. What's your world like? Without the war, I mean. I want to believe that here in our world, children matter. Should matter at least."
"I came here when I was twelve and have been here since. My granddad had a wardobe that I entered and walked into Narnia. Without the war, oh it's beautiful and fun. There's so much to do. Even with the war happening because my granddad lived in the countryside. Which is how the Pevensies came to Narnia. Through the same wardrobe I did since they were staying at my granddad's. We had a big backyard with a few trees. Couple of acres of land. Three horses. One also coincidentally named Julius too. The other two were Midnight and Orlando. They should, and that's why they were evacuated. For the most part." She said softly.
"I don't know how it is on the mainland though."
"That's quite a long time. Shouldn't the war be over now?" He asked, listening intensely, taking in what she said.
"I have hardly left my home, and here you are, as far from it as possible. I don't blame you for missing it sometimes, because for all its faults, it's still your home, right? My home has its faults, but I still consider it home. I suppose it is, in part at least, because I grew up there."
"It's possible. But time runs differently between our worlds. For all we know, it could be just seconds before the Pevensies decided to walk into the wardrobe in order to hide from my granddad and Mrs. Macready after accidentally breaking a window with a cricket ball." She said, nodding in agreement.
"It's a place I eventually want to go back to. But we've been kept here for this long for a reason. Until he decides we're meant to go home."
"A what? I know what a ball is, and what a cricket is, but... never put together." He asked, curious as to how it all worked.
"I understand that. It's home, after all. But, this is home too, isn't it? For you at least."
"I don't know if you know what baseball is. But cricket is a sport similar to that. Instead of a narrow bat, you use a wider paddle to hit the ball." She rubbed her arm and smiled softly.
"Narnia is home too. Narnia has been my home for seventeen years. I don't know how it would be, were I to ever go back."
Enjolras nodded, he knew that. "I've heard of it, some of the town children play it. I have never played it, but, I have seen them do it when I pass by." He said, looking over at Willow, who seemed to be fast asleep.
"It might be different, though I don't know. I have not been there, of course, but, if I could, I would likely find it different as well."
"The city is definitely different from the countryside. I love them both for different reasons. But I love the countryside more. There's beauty in the wide space and rolling hills. Most might find us simple folks or folks who are old money, but granddad donates what he can to charity, and opened his home to the Pevensies for safety during the war."

Modern AU for Peter, @iustusrex.
