But the representation of Odysseus as a reluctant warlord makes a nonsense of the movie’s imagined world. We are not shown that war or killing are bad, only that good men sometimes feel bad about it – a very different point.

Once upon a time, a Tolkien enthusiast, if they wished to learn what Brian Sibley had written about his choices in adapting The Lord of the Rings for radio, would have been obliged to write a letter to the Tolkien Society in the hope of being provided with the article, or else would have had to go chasing up libraries for an archival copy of the relevant number of the journal Mallorn.
