Here’s Part 1 of the chemical reactions posters, including precipitation, decomposition, combustion, addition and neutralisation. Further parts to come, so don’t worry if there’s a reaction not yet included that you think should be! Head on over to the site to download printable versions - they’ll hopefully also be available for purchase in the not too distant future…
California is always leading the pack in terms of sustainability, and is now taking steps to reduce microplastics in cosmetic products.
On May 23, California’s Assembly passed a bill banning the use of plastic microbeads in soaps and cosmetics, following actions already being taken by...

Found this cutie while climbing my hiding spot at Nasugbu, Batangas. It's my first time seeing a juvenile holothuroid like this one (measures around 3.50cm), so this deserves to be blog-worthy! P.S. I've seen around 30-40 of these slithering around the area and trust me, they're really long.
Collab update: Halved the number of my subjects because we won’t make it if I did all 8 of ‘em. We had an 8-year old kid join us too! We’re excited!
plus, they're all looking good!
I’m (absolutely not) ready for the International Day for Biological Diversity collab! I’ll be doing a flora-fauna series with my friend Gielizza Calzado, who is a naturalist and loves to make beautiful works of art. (Note: I am a total noob when it comes to coloring thaaangs haha) I’ll be doing a sketch/ink/color rendition of:
Trogonoptera trojana
Ornithoptera croesus
Polyplectron emphanum
Terpsiphone cyanescens
Rhincodon typus
Carcharhinus melanopterus
Strongylodon macrobotrys
Aerides lawrenciae
This taxing work would mean living the hermit life for 4 straight days but I’m sure it will be all worth it. When I finish all of them, I’ll upload all of our works here. See you in four days! -Kent

During my semestral break last year, I developed an overwhelming curiosity for invertebrates because we had a wild class about them. These were the first pieces I managed to pull off in a couple of weeks while tending to Mama in the hospital last October 2013, I showed to this one to a friend and she thinks we should do a series collaboration for World Diversity Day on the 22nd! What do you guys think? Comments, criticisms, and feedback would be appreciated deeply. :)
It’s World Diversity Day on the 22nd, and I’m looking for a plant/fungi/bacteria and animal subjects for a color and sketch rendition for my collab. So far, I’m considering on doing Rhincodon typus for my animal subject. *whispers* pls help me
We're doing a color-sketch collaboration for World Diversity Day on the 22nd of May! If you are interested or want to send suggestions for subjects, head over to my personal blog and send 'em right away! The works will be showcased there too! :)
Microbead Awareness Post
Following a reblog concerning microbeads, I've decided to do a little research about it.
Microbeads - What are these?
Microbeads are little plastic balls ranging from 0.5 to 500 micrometers in diameter. It is made out of a polymer of polypropylene, and upon manufacturing, microbeads are usually attached with biomolecules, such as ligands, DNA/RNA, proteins, and antigens, among others.
Uses
Microbeads are often used in cosmetics and personal care products - toothpastes, shaving cream, exfoliating scrubs etc. It has been found that microbeads may constitute up to 10% of a product's volume.
Waste Treatment
Many waste treatment facilities are not capable of filtering microbeads due to their small size, thus they still persist in waste water leaving the facility.
Where do they end up?
According to Beat the Microbead, a movement dedicated to reduce and finally eliminate the use of microbeads, these particles have been found in the waters of lakes and oceans, even as far as the North Pole. Ocean currents can carry them thousands of mile away from its source.
Also, microbeads can be ingested by aquatic life, which can, in turn, accumulate in their body and afterwards consumed by humans who eat them. Albeit small, researchers have found that alongside degrading plastic fiber, microbead pollution in the oceans is rapidly increasing, thus calling for the reduction and removal of the use of microbeads.
What can you do?
Aside from supporting companies that produce natural, biodegradable, and green cosmetic products, there are various NGO's that do seminars and various programs in the campaign against microbeads in cosmetics.
Among them are: Plastic Soup Foundation Stichting de Nordzee Flora and Fauna International 5 Gyres Clean Coasts - Irelands For more information regarding microbeads, visit beatthemicrobead.org.
Microbeads should be a huge concern to everyone. Theres nkw an app allowing you to scan the barcodes of your cosmetics to find if they contain microbeads. Download Beat the Microbead! Its the least you can do to help save our beautiful oceans.
Thanks for the tip! It’s awesome that such an app exists! You guys should totally check it out.
I got so excited about this - what a great idea. Next step: expand to include countries in Asia!
There was a time when I tried to make a high school research paper about microbeads in cosmetics and how they affect both freshwater and marine ecological niches from the microbial level up to a macro level. Everyone should know about this!
