Clerkship Chronicles
Just started clerkship aka hospital side aka no more classroom setting!! In here, I will share all the procedures/ experiences/ thoughts that I had on my 365 days of duty as a clerk. This post will be updated regularly and hopefully I can continue this project!!
Day 1 CC (04.01.15) - learned how to read CVP - Trach care Day 2 CC (04.02.15) - blood extraction on dorsalis pedis (but I failed haha) - foley catheter removal and insertion - drainage of colostomy bag
Day 3 CC (04.03.15) - basically did nothing today! slept the whole day after my duty. I’ve never been this tired! but that happy kind of tired ;)
Day 4 CC (04.04.15) - first time to attend Easter vigil mass ALONE. I’m finally becoming a doctor aka no vacation, missing family events/ gatherings lol
Day 5 CC (04.05.15) - first time to miss Sunday mass everrrrr :( - consultant told the patient I’ve been monitoring: “Miracle talaga yung nangyari sayo. TIngnan mo Easter Sunday ngayon, ikaw din muling nabuhay. Dahil yan sa prayers ng pamilya mo.” (What just happened to you was a miracle. Today is Easter Sunday, and just like today, you were like risen from the dead. All because of the prayers of your family.” It feels so good and comforting to have heard that statement from a consultant. It made me feel that miracles do happen :)
Day 6 CC (04.06.15) - first legit activity outside the hospital: car wash!! haha! because my life at present is plainly hospital-eat-work-eat-home-eat-sleep-hospital...
Day 7 CC (04.07.15) - first primary patient: BIRADS 4, breast mass - first overtime! lol!! went home at 7:30 instead of 5pm just to finish my patient’s paper works
Day 8 CC (04.08.15) - first rounds by a resident - first OR scrub in: Mammogram guided needle localization excision biopsy with frozen section - first straight catheter insertion in a female patient - patient told me: “Ikaw yung guardian angel ko habang nasa operating room.” (”You were my guardian angel while I was in the operating room.”)
Day 9 CC (04.09.15) - too many q1 patients!! can’t believe i was able to survive my 29 hour duty!
Day 10 CC (04.10.15) - first time to do discharge summary - first JP drain - patient D told her relatives: “Eto siya yung bantay ko nung isang araw, di din talaga siya natulog. Sipag.” (”She was my watcher the other day, she did not sleep just to monitor me. She is so hard-working.”
Day 11 CC (04.11.15) - first OR assist! Case: ORIF - while at the OR, Dr V told me: “Parang kailan lang naging paseyente kita, ngayon inaassist mo na ako sa sa surgery.” (”Years ago, you were just my patient, now you’re already assisting me here at the OR.” <3 #brbmelting - no lunch break just a quick 15 min post lunch pre-dinner meal - went in at OR at 7am, surgery finished at 4 pm, went in at the post-anesthesia care unit at 4:15 pm, went back at the ward at 1:30 am. crey crey
Day 12 (04.12.15) - too tired to function! So thankful for my dutymates who covered for my deck and let me sleep instead
Day 13 (04.13.15) - missed this day! :(
Day 14 (04.14.15) - 4 referrals in a day!! - first real person DRE - while I was referring for GIT, my back’s patient had to undergo emergency repair of fascial dehiscence aka her intestine popped out so I have to scrub in. - second assist plus first time to hold liver mets, bury my hand inside a patient’s abdomen, felt the spleen, saw an ovarian cyst. All thanks to Dr M!!
Day 15 (04.15.15) - last duty day at Surgery ward! sepanx issues!! i’ll miss being in the ward. I’ve learned so many skills and the patients and their families are easy to talk to :(
Day 16 (04.16.15) - first day at Surgery Pay! - hot headed surgery resident now smiles at me and is comfortable joking around with me. Such an accomplishment when you get a resident’s soft spot haha
Day 17 (04.17.15) - 2 OR assist in 1 day!! 10am-1pm saucerization then i was halfway through my lunch when someone called me that I have to scrub in for another surgery at 1:30pm- 8pm for hemorrhoidectomy. I was also about to scrub in for another emergency appendectomy but I just can’t take another OR assist so I asked someone to fill me in. #toxicJI literally had no sleep!! too many Q1 monitoring plus OR fatigue #whatdaythisday
Day 18 (04.18.15)
Day 19 CC (04.19.15) - chillers! - first ice cream day with surg groupmates
Off to the Hospital Side
Just got promoted as clinical clerk!!! I’m so excited but at the same time, super duper scared! I hear stories of consultants shouting at clerks in front of patients, of clerks wanting to quit medicine after encountering too much deaths, of patients wanting to be well but can’t do anything because of financial problems.
But as what one outgoing clinical clerk told us, “Don’t believe their stories. You make your own JI (Junior Intern) Story” Here’s to taking that baby steps to that MD!!
Countdown to clerkship
aka 9 long exams, 9 final exams and 1 OSCE. Hoping that everything goes well. Wish me luck!!!
God has brought you this far, and though the road in front of you may now look terrifying, do not turn back. God is still with you. He will still fulfill His promise. God has not changed His mind

DR DG: "Paano kung sinabi ko sa inyo na I'm your only hope to pass the exam, Eh di binayo niyo ako dito. Diba? *points to the slide flashed in front* That's why they killed him."

Damn, every single Jorge Muniz’s comic I see is more awesome than the previous one.
Reblogging this because Im having the same sentiments again hayyyyy medschool!
