has anyone figured out how to turn off the thing where you love your pet so much it slides inexorably into grief-borrowing
“For me this glass is already broken. I enjoy it; I drink out of it. It holds my water admirably, sometimes even reflecting the sun in beautiful patterns. If I should tap it, it has a lovely ring to it. But when I put this glass on the shelf and the wind knocks it over or my elbow brushes it off the table and it falls to the ground and shatters, I say, ‘Of course.’ When I understand that the glass is already broken, every moment with it is precious.”
sometimes you're genuinely interested in fictional hets but the fan conception of their getting together is so dire & scary [heterosexually married with babies etc] that you genuinely start to feel it would be a happier ending to you if they just died in each other's arms instead
yall need to stop being so scared of "het" writing lol. as someone else said, skill issue.
I *rarely like marriage endings and very very rarely they actually make a pretty good child continuation. but seriously it's not going anywhere and IS going to keep existing in non-het relationships too. it is normal for folks to want kids.. also normal for them to not want them! both are valid yknow? and i personally dont want kids either. if i dont like a certain ending i just.. pretend it doesnt exist yo. it's really not that deep. I think a lot of yall are just projecting ur own wants on the author.
y are we demonising either side here when there are plenty of books that cater to both nowadays.
I think you might want to reflect when you say things like "both are valid" and "y are we demonising either side here" that you are treating characters (women characters for one, the "het" is there because I was specifically talking about straight m/f couples & the woman being there is important) getting these sort of endings as an inherently neutral thing that is subject entirely to personal choice, as opposed to something subject to societal & cultural pressures & assumptions
like firstly — these are stories & so none of the characters are doing these things of their own free will, they are being put in these situations for a reason by the author, and when it is a character (particularly a female character) who has shown no inclination in the story towards being a traditional wife-and-mother, I think it's entirely fair to question what that reason is on the author's part. when it's a whole community of people writing this particular ending I think it's entirely fair to wonder what the driving force behind this choice is. especially if the relationship has never shown any signs of leading in this direction, and maybe even indicated the opposite, I think it's entirely fair to question why such a large amount of people consider this in particular to be a "natural" and "happy" ending for them despite that!
because like the fact of the matter is that stories exist within a social and cultural context — all sides are not made equal because one of them has the weight of thousands of years of pressure & coercion & even violence behind forcing people (particularly women) into these sort of relationships & roles. there are millions of stories out there that "assume" women & straight m/f couples naturally & happily fall into these relationship frameworks, which are born from that systematic misogyny. and there are comparatively few that say the free if this sort of expectation and pressure. so you can understand why being presented with the latter sort of story & delighted by it one might be distressed to find out that such a large amount of fan content gravitates right back to the traditional framing of things the original relationship had avoided
I do get your intent here — stories are about variety & there always will be some stories about this stuff, and it's not wrong to explore it by any means. I just want you to consider more about why someone would find this offputting taking into account a greater context
