Elegance
Majesty.
Here’s an expanded version of the previous map of Logan Square, north to Belmont, in 1881.
Note at Woodard and Spaulding there is a “haunted house.”
Inflating a set of cat lungs
Lungs are by most accounts mundane. Everybody has them, few give it much thought. But sequestered within darkness of the chest cavity, enveloping the fluttering heart, there’s an incredible wonder to this oddly inflatable organ.
Dissection is a destructive process. Rudely excised from membranous mooring and nourishing vessels, the deflated lungs appear little more than bloodied meat; amorphous and exposed…….until a breath of air unfurls its secret glory.
Here, a set of cat lungs is inflated with a straw. Comprised of hundreds of millions of microscopic air sacks called alveoli, mammalian lungs harbor air capacity that is difficult to believe unless seen. The color of the entire organ lightens into a soft pink, as each microscopic sac fills with air.
A debt of gratitude is owed to cyborgraptor for her assistance in creating these gifs, as well as the students that helped me film this demo.
Kids, don’t try this at home, OK?
SO COOL

Don’t even think about it, buddy
Chicago Cubs and mascot, 1908, Chicago.
This mascot is probably my favorite thing I've seen on Calumet 412, which is saying a lot.
It's a tough life.
Today was a really good day.
L: paw, Ursus maritimus (polar bear)
R: paw, Felis catus (Henry Bear)

I decided to break the law to provide a necessary medical service because women were dying at the hands of butchers and incompetent quacks, and there was no one there to help them. The law was barbarous, cruel and unjust. I had been in a concentration camp, and I knew what suffering was. If I can ease suffering, I feel perfectly justified in doing so.
Dr. Henry Morgentaler, a Canadian doctor who was arrested four times for performing abortions, but whose arrests eventually led to the 1988 Canadian Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the country. He died this week at the age of 90. Good obit in the NY Times.

Today Catie and I made window boxes for our apartment. We have a concrete sill outside that is the perfect size but we had no way to mount a box there and did not want it to fall on the head of a passerby if a wind came up.
Our solution: we drilled holes in the box near the edges and ran a chain through. On the inside, the hole is halfway up the box so that it's at window level, and on the front the chain emerges at the top (under the lip) and runs to the other side. The ends of the chain are nailed into the underside of the wooden sill.
An older man at Home Depot named Siegfried cut the chain for us and explained each step as he did it. He folded the chain up and wrapped a piece of blue painter's tape around it and said, "you're getting the blue ribbon treatment." He was wearing American flag suspenders.
We planted basil, cilantro, chives, rosemary, tarragon, and parsley. For the two boxes, soil, chain, plants, and a watering can, the cost was about $60. We are excessively proud of ourselves and the cats won't leave the windows.
