Alice, listening intently, nodded at his words, ‘‘Thanks for the advice, I’ll try not to.’’ She wasn’t one to challenge others for the fun of it, it was right down dangerous for her to do so, especially here. ‘’But, being a mundane, I’m a bit more fragile than others, I can’t afford to slip up, so as long as no one crosses or threatens me in return, there won’t be a problem.’‘

“Being here gives you some protection,” he said with a nod. “Vampires are the most likely to be a threat to you, and they’re unlikely to go through the trouble of harming a mundane who lives under the Clave’s own roof. The same can be said of others.”

‘‘And here I was, trying my best to hide it.’‘ Alice pointed out, attempting a weak joke, a bit disappointed that she couldn’t, but she knew that once people noticed something, it was best to tell them. ‘‘It sure was. Honestly, every morning I wake up it’s a guess what’s going to happen next. But figuring out how everything works here and who not to cross takes for good training.’‘

“Well, I’m perceptive,” Caius shrugged. “I’d suggest trying not to cross — or threaten, like you just did — anyone but your fellow mundanes. Even those without bad intentions might not be completely in control of their abilities, and have dangerous reflexes.”

Caleb was sat in the corner of the training room, sword laid across his lap as he sharpened the blade slowly and meticulously. Boredom was beginning to eat away at him and he needed something to do to kill time while the sun was still up. Turning the whetting stone in his hand, he looked up at the person who had walked into the room with a smile. “Don’t think I’ve seen your face in here before? That bored, huh?”

Caius turned when the vampire addressed him, responding to the question with a shrug. “Well, can you blame me?”

Guess adjusting back to the normal everyday was harder than Alice first thought it’d be. ‘’Nice meeting you anyway, I guess. Despite the circumstances and everything.’’ She said with an awkward smile. Seeing the paper turning back into metal, she just simply put it down, trying not to think too much about the whole magic thing. ‘’You caught that, huh? Yes, I’ve only known about all this for about a week to be honest.’’

“It tends to be obvious enough,” Caius remarked with a shrug.There was something unmistakeable about someone coming to terms with the existence of the Shadow World. “Quite an...interesting week, I’m sure.”

The second the knife turned to paper, Alice couldn’t help but be shocked, Alice had learnt magic was real, but actually seeing it for herself was a whole different story. At least it helped her get over her freak-out from earlier. ‘’I-I guess you have a point, I get having a weapon pointed at you out of nowhere, especially in the kitchen isn’t normal.’’ She replied a bit embarrassed that she’d pointed the knife in the first place. ‘’Sorry about that..I’m Alice, Alice Whelan.’’

“Yes, it isn’t,” he replied dryly, pouring himself a drink. “Pleasure, Alice.” Now sure that the mundane wasn’t going to attempt to stab him, the warlock turned the paper knife back into metal. “’You’re new to this world, I assume.”

Kendall was in one of the training rooms, working on her magic. She still had the shakiest control at best, and knew that she needed to work on it. She had already accidentally broken enough dishes, she was getting tired of it. Before she even attempted any kind of spell work, she just wanted to try to get in tune with her magic. Be able to summon it at will. She’d had varying amounts of success at that. Usually she was only able to summon her magics to her fingers in the form of a few sparks before it fizzled out. But this time, she had been successful, managing to summon a whole ball of sparks to her hands. Of course, as soon as she had realized what she had done and the elation filled her body, the ball of magic got out of control, whizzing out of her hand and towards the open door. 

“Watch out!” She called out, holding her hand out in an attempt to try to stop the wayward magic.

Caius sensed the ball of sparks moving in his direction instantly, making it disintegrate without even looking up. “Unless your goal with this exercise was to strike unsuspecting passersby or singe the Institute walls,” he said, with a tone of mild irritation. “I must inform you that you’re wasting your time.”

“After you.” Gerardo could have taken on the hounds but he was more interested in seeing how the warlock worked, it wasn’t often he got an opportunity to. 

Caius nodded, and abruptly the noises of the hellhounds ceased, before becoming more blood curdling than before. The warlock opened the door to reveal the beasts transfixed by a glowing symbol above them, apparently howling in pain. Looking at them for just a moment, Caius spoke a single word in a demonic language, and suddenly, the demons seemed to blink out of existence.

“You can say that again. Still the shorter this takes the quicker we can get back.” Gerard walking off in the direction the warlock had pointed in. 

As they neared the barn, Caius began to hear the howls and yelps of the demons. “Shall I just finish them off, or would you like a whack at them?”

Alice had been at the Institute for over a week now, but still couldn’t seem to get over the fact that monsters, real monsters, not just bad human beings, were real. At the moment, the best thing for her to do right now was to get back into a normal daily routine to keep herself busy, a routine that happened to involve cooking of course. However, the loneliness of having to cook and eat alone quickly got to her as her hands began to shake when she’d started cutting up the carrots. ‘’God damnit!’’ cursing to herself, she had the urge to just throw the whole thing in the trash, but a sound to her left startled her, instinctively increasing her hold on the kitchen knife. ‘’Who are you?’’

Walking in to the Institute kitchen for a drink, Caius did not entirely expect to find a mundane pointing a knife at him — but he wasn’t fazed, either, magically transmuting the knife into paper. “I ought to be asking you that,” the warlock responded with a raised eyebrow, as he took a seat at the kitchen island. “Caius Faust.”

Gerard stepped through the portal just after the warlock, no matter how many times he experienced this magic it always surprised him when he emerged in a completely different place. “Hellhounds? That’s hardly a major incident.” The vampire as disappointed and annoyed as hell, they ordered him around over hellhounds. Surely the warlock could have dealt with that by himself. “Are they far?”

“No, it isn’t. Any half-decent Nephilim could solve this.” Caius gestured to a handful of dilapidated farm buildings a short distance away. “There.”

“Hm.” Gerard knew of the county but couldn’t recall having ever actually been there and it seemed strange that the demons would be outside the city but there was advantage to it. It was unexpected and still close enough to the city for them to strike when they pleased. “Very well.” He watched and waited for the warlock to open his Portal. 

Caius opened the Portal in a few moment, nodding at the vampire to follow him and stepping through to the other side. As his eyes scanned the land in front of him, he wordlessly cast a tracking spell, eyes glowing for a split second. “Well, there’s several hellhounds in the distance.” Hardly what he’d classify as major.

Gerardo wasn’t happy about being ordered around by the shadowhunters, sure it was good to be doing something but it was normally on his own time. Still despite the slight resentment of being told what to do he supposed it was inevitable giving that he was currently living amongst the Nephilim. The vampire had yet to meet that man he had been partnered with though he had heard of him. Gerard grabbed the warlock’s hand shaking his hand briskly and with a firm grip before letting go. “Gerardo Beltrano. So do you know where it is exactly we’re going?”

“Nassau County. An unincorporated area.” Most of the demon activity thus far had been focused on New York City itself, and this changed the pattern. He nodded to the Portal to his left, yet to be opened. “Shall we leave, then?”

Having been increasingly bored with the goings on at the Institute, Caius welcomed the possibility of having something interesting to do, even if he had quite unnecessarily been given a partner — anything he couldn’t defeat himself a vampire would stand no chance against. Catching sight of the clan leader approach, he extended a hand in greeting. “Caius Faust.”

Nodding in agreement when he said that it was very much about the little things. Matt had imagined as much but knowing that to accepting it was a subtly different thing. “I guess I can live without eating food as long as I don’t have the craving. The idea of not eating food again does suck, pun not intended.”

“I’m sure it does,” Caius replied, sympathetically. “Funny, most vampires seem to miss the sun more than human food.”

“You know what I don’t miss about being human are the hangovers the next day after the party, or the fact that I can play the guitar with the tips of my fingers getting sore,” he noted as he took a sip from the glass of blood that he was reluctantly drinking. He was pushing his limits recently, the last time he had fed was almost a week ago and somehow with the party, he found himself hungrier than ever. “I do miss burgers though, food in general.”

“It’s the little things,” Caius remarked dryly. The vampire wasn’t quite a fledgling, but clearly still adjusting. “On the bright side, in a few decades you’ll either have stopped craving them or be able to teach yourself to ingest food again.”

“I have to admit I have some vested interest in that statement,” she replied with a devious smile. “It’s hardly the prettiest thing to wear — and I do appreciate the finer things in life,” she replied, consciously using his phrasing. Compared to the 20s’ dazzle, the white cotton looked stark in its simplicity. “Well you look devilishly handsome, I cannot deny that. But it leaves a lot to imagination.” She smoothed the fabric of his lapel before looking up to meet his eyes. “Why, thank you but you should know this outfit isn’t completely accurate.”

“More than just some, I’d say,” Caius replied mirroring her smile. “What is it you’re trying to imagine, precisely?” He teased, as she smoothed down the fabric. “Even so. The effect is the same.”
