in light of the tragic passing of caroline flack, i thought i’d take this opportunity to offer some words that have been going around in my head since hearing the news.
most of you on here will not know who she is but all in all, she was the victim of bullying by online trolls, and a vile media campaign that ultimately led her to take her own life.
since the announcement of her death, the words, which caroline flack herself circulated on her social media, ‘in a world where you can be anything, be kind’, have been circulating. and it’s true that’s what every single person on the planet should choose, because you don’t know what kind of battle people are dealing with interally. even celebrities who chose to do whart they do and live their life in the limelight.
i myself have suffered with anxiety and depression for most of the last ten years and have had some very dark days. i take things to heart and take things very personally. i strive to get people to like me and am probably a little naive in thinknig that’s possible. at my age, maybe i should know better but i like to look for the good in everyone. unfortunately, in real life that’s much easier to spot in a person than it is online.
people that spread hate and hurt online do so because they don’t have to face any consequences, or guilt because they’re hiding behind a screen. they don’t have to look a person in the eye and see exactly what comments do to another person. the thing is, the words ‘ in a world where you can be anything, be kind ‘ can be said as often as people want, be shared a bunch of times but in the end, unfortunately, that’s not how everyone is built. there will always be people that gt a kick of hurting others and making others overthink everything, questions choices they make.
it’s all good and well telling people everything will be alright and things wll get better but people like me, that suffer from anxiety can’t always comprehend that. we let comments take root in our brains and spend hours upon hours overthinking.
i’m lucky because i have an incredible family with a mother and siblings that i can openly speak to about how i’m feeling and what i’m thinking, i also have friends that understand that not everyday is a happy day for me.
i’m lucky. a lot of people don’t have that, or a lot of people consider themselves a burden to others and keep things bottled up, until ultimately, they feel like the only option they have is to end things. that they’d be less of a burden to the ones they love if they weren’t around anymore.
and it’s tragic because that’s not the case and never will be the case.
celebrities are normal people as well. and go through the same things we all do. except their struggles are often reported on in the media.
i’m no saint. i’ve talked about people behind their backs, i’ve called people names, i’ve snapped at people when i’ve been in a bad mood. i hold my hands up to that. no one is perfect. we’re human beings, not robots. perfection isn’t something we can achieve. but we can always strive to be a better person.
so the next time you’re about to hit send on a shitty comment, share a meme that could be hurtful to people or verbally pick on someone....think about what you’re doing to them internally, where no one else can see just how hard of a time someone is having.
