about the young Professor Snape
Even though I really love Alan Rickman as our Potionsmaster he detracts us from the fact that Severus Snape was not old, he died at the age of only 38!
He starts his career or better- his cover job as Professor, Potions teacher AND Head of House Slytherin at the age of only 21 !
Tom Riddle was rejected at the age of 18 maybe for other real reasons, with the justification he was too young.
So Snape was indeed a very young Professor and especially notable a very young Head-of -House. As far as I know maybe the youngest ever ( correct me if you know better).
Think what you want about his qualities as teacher, but he was very qualified in the subjects Potions and the Dark Arts ( and at Occlumency, but thats no official subject)
Remarkabel: in his time as Professor Slytherin won the House Cup 6 years in a row.
Because I dont believe the other Professors would accept them winning by cheating or taking House Points from other Houses ( yes he is good at it) I dare to say they earned it by a good performance in classes. Bad behaviour in class would have lost them points, so that seemed to work quite good also.
As we know he had his reasons to be eager to show the other houses the worth of his house Slytherin. Sounds he was quite successful.
About the person…..Yes he was very young, but…….I dont see him as that insecure, maybe shy boy anymore. Maybe inside. Not outside. I believe his Death Eater times and the incidents around the prophecy and the Potters death pushed him to grow up in a brutal way. He had to learn fast, to learn to fight, to survive, even to fool the Dark Lord. It was of vitally importance to him to control himself, stay in cover every moment.
Remember: “he looked like a man who had lived a hundred years of misery …..”
I believe the moment his old teachers met him again as new colleague on his first day, they had problems to recognize that schoolboy in the still young but now grown up, bitter, sad, sarcastic and even intimidating man with the breath of Dark Magic around him.
He had learned the hard way to cover his true self behind his mask, to protect himself from beeing hurt or humiliated again. Maybe even to protect himself from loving again, or be loved because he thinks he is not worth it anymore.
