Caleb shrugged. “Not sure yet, probably in the next couple of weeks. You can wear whatever they’re gonna shed their clothes anyway, you’ll probably see a lot of penis.” 

That elicited a surprised giggle from Jade. “Oh! Well, as long as there will be a lot of penis then,” she laughed. “As for tonight….what do you want to do? We can snuggle in and watch a flick, hand out candy to trick or treaters? And then…we’ll see where the night takes us.”

Caleb smiled softly. “I fear that we might have to put that on hold till o figure out what to do with the assholes at my house.

Jade groaned. “Oh god, I almost forgot. How long are they going to be hanging around? We can always go back to my place…you know, for privacy…” she trailed off suggestively, giving Caleb a wink.

Caleb laughed and shook his head. “You’re my mate you’re here, you’re stuck with me, I’ll take care of them and then we can sit outside and hand out candy to young children dressed like me.”

Caleb laughed. “I’m not the real deal, not yet I haven’t been officially annointed for lack of a better term, I’m sure if this dispute goes well they will want it to be soon.”

“What is the anointing ceremony like?” Jade asked, genuinely curious. “Is it like the freemasons or something?” She laughed. “Or will there be orgies? If there are orgies I am definitely breaking up with you…if you don’t invite me,” she teased.

Caleb laughed. “I’m not the real deal, not yet I haven’t been officially annointed for lack of a better term, I’m sure if this dispute goes well they will want it to be soon.”

Caleb shook his head. “No you’re invited, you’re my mate, that’s pretty much an invitation into the pack. You’ll be there right beside me the whole time.. if you want.”

Caleb shook his head laughing. “No, nothing like that, but pretty much all the members come and bow to me go show that they’re all accepting of me being the alpha. Then we all turn to wolves and run together.”

Caleb nodded.”eventually they will, and if I think they’ve got good intentions, not necissarily my ideas, but have good intentions I will peacefully step down in return for peace from all of the pack.” He shrugged. “I have a life, and a soon to be wife and I want to live my days out with her, the title alpha means nothing to me.”

Jade was touched, and she smiled. “That’s sweet Caleb, but I don’t want you to give all of that up just for me. You’ll be an amazing leader, and I’m sure the pack could use someone like you.”

If there is a better leader among the people they should be leader.” He rolled his eyes. “Can we stop talking about this and start talking about how amazing you are.”

Caleb laughed and shook his head. “No thankfully he doesn’t want to kill me, he doesn’t even know I’m in the picture right now.” He stated “he just wants to kill the other two. We’re safe.” Caleb’s eyes worried that his role would scare her off. “I’m sorry, I didn’t tell you, I didn’t think it would be that much of a big deal.”

“It is a big deal, and you should have told me!” She was worried about the whole thing, but more upset that he didn’t think it was important enough to discuss with her. She took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. I’m not mad, I’m just– I don’t know what I’m feeling. Confused, mostly. And worried. What do you have to do about this situation with the other wolf?”

That’s the best I can do for them, and they’ll accept it because I’m the alpha. And to challenge an alphas ruling is to challenge the alpha. And they don’t want to be alpha.” He shrugged again. “It makes sense in wolves.”

When the wolf was gone back into the woods Caleb looked around to make sure no one else would disturb them before walking back over to jade and wrapping his arm around her. “Come on, we should get home it’s not safe right now.”

“Caleb, what’s going on? What do you mean it isn’t safe now? Who was that man?” She realized that she was asking a lot of questions, but something didn’t seem right about the situation. “I’m sorry, am I being overly anxious?” She tried to laugh to dispel some of her tension.

Caleb sighed softly. “So, you see when I came here, apparently there was a vacant spot for the alpha role, and no one in the pack came forward and when I came in they all kind of decided that I’m the alpha and that guy and two others got into it and now one is threatening to kill everyone and I have to take care of it.”

Jade didn’t know what she was expecting, but it wasn’t THAT. “Oh, um…so you’re the alpha?!” She had to admit that she found the idea somewhat exciting, but it also scared the hell out of her. “Wait. So that just happened? And now someone wants to kill you and everyone else? Jesus Caleb!” She gripped his arm protectively.

Jade and Caleb walked hand-in-hand through the park, feet rustling through the fallen leaves. The air was crisp and invigorating, and those species who had to wear sweaters and hats to protect themselves from the encroaching chill were beginning to do so. Autumn was in full swing, and this was a special time of year in Celtius.

Jade was particularly enjoying the quiet stroll. Newly engaged, she was completely love-drunk; an emotion that was new for her despite her 295 years on earth. Caleb had awakened something within; a fire that Jade thought didn’t exist but simply had never been stoked to life. Now the fire burned, and Jade knew it would never be extinguished.

As the two headed deeper down the path into the trees, Jade heard a rustle. Caleb apparently heard it too, as he instinctively put a protective arm up to shield Jade from whatever potential dangers approached  A somewhat ragged looking young man appeared, and he was breathing heavily, as if he had just been running. “Caleb,” the stranger said. “We have to talk.”

“Caleb? Who is this?” Jade asked, concerned. He smiled down to her. “A colleague of sorts. Hold on just one moment while I speak with him darling. I’ll be right back.” He walked several yards away with the other man and they conversed, heads close together. Jade watched them, confused. What the heck was going on?

Caleb sighed as he pulled the wolf farther away from jade. “I told you guys to call me first, she doesn’t know yet, I don’t want to freak her out.” He whispered. “What’s going on.” The other wolf quickly described the dispute and Caleb sighed fingers pinching the bridge of his nose. “Okay... Wait back at my house with the two others... IN MY DEN. And I’ll be there shortly, we will get it handled tonight I promise, just let me enjoy a brief walk with my mate.”

A couple hours later found the two laying in bed with Caleb’s arms wrapped around her. His hair stuck to his forehead as he looked over at his fiancé. “So we should tell my dad.” He whispered. “He’ll be happy to know we’re not alone… he always thought of you like a daughter.”

“That would be nice,” she said contentedly. Jade knew Caleb’s father wasn’t doing well, and the idea of bringing him this happy news made her smile. “We can go over today, if we can ever get out of bed,” she teased.

Caleb smiled. “Sure! We will make banana pancakes, he loves those.” Pulling her close he kissed her head softly. “I love you.”

Caleb smiled as he looked at her, his inner wolf happy that his mate accepted him. Without much thought he walked out of the kitchen and into a box he hadn’t unpacked yet. Pulling out a small box from his dorm stuff he walked back to the kitchen. “So… I made this… fuck I made this 10 years ago? We had to take an arts elective and I took 3D design… and then when I sold my first design for a building in New York I bought the gem.” Holding out the box he smiled at her nervously. “jade, when I made this I made it for you, only you and I never thought I’d ever get to give it to you… and I know that this is fast and crazy and I won’t be offended if you slap me, but will you marry me?” He asked opening the box to show a hand made diamond ring.

Jade gaped at the beautiful ring that Caleb held out to her. “Marry you? Caleb are you serious?” She let out a surprised laugh. “This is– this is crazy!” She knew that, she knew it was crazy, but yet it still all felt right somehow. Like all her life she had been waiting for this moment. Before he could say anything else, she blurted, “YES! Yes, I will marry you!”

Caleb smiled brightly when she said yes. “Wait really? You’ll marry me?” He smiled and picked her up kissing her. “Oh my God we’re getting married!”

Jade laughed heartily as he picked her up, and kissed him back, kissed him thoroughly. She always assumed that marriage wasn’t for her, that finding a true mate in this messed up world wasn’t in the cards for her. But now it was happening, it was real and she couldn’t be more happy. “The waffles can wait,” she said, purring. “Take me to bed. Now.”
