Love in the Clouds has quite a few trope reversals, but the one that I love the most is that usually the friend/companion/servant of the endangered FL will cave and beg someone-- usually the ML-- to save her, but Erqi? Nah. He stayed faithful to Ming Yi's wishes and didn't breathe a word even though he repeatedly urged her to tell Bo Zai the truth. It was great because a) when he ends up sacrificing himself for her, we got MORE ANGST with the shot of the ML standing in the shadows like "wtf was that," clearly having followed her even though he just dramatically broke up with her, and B) (😎) instead we get to the later point of Bo Zai dying, telling Bu Xiu not to tell Ming Yi, and USUALLY the male lead's servant/friend/whatever would stand by it, but IMMEDIATELY in the next scene Bu Xiu is breaking into the academy like "MOM!!!! DAD'S DYING!!!! COME SAVE HIM!!!" and I just love it so much. 😂
