I realize the "we all black" way of thinking has made it's way into my brain.

Shani Crowe is an interdisciplinary artist from Chicago’s south side. The product of an Art rich, Afrocentric upbringing, Shani creates work that is centered on keeping the proverbial flame of cultural coiffure, adornment, and beauty ritual, as they relate to the diasporic African. She seeks to connect with people through her artistic practice to convey a message of love, cultural identity and Black unity and to create a variety of visual and wearable art, prompting a meaningful exchange between the artist and viewer/client. Crowe on “Why do you think it’s important to preserve black hairstyles?”:

Braiding is a sacred art in a lot of ways because it’s so rich in tradition—a lot of times we don’t really understand how much it means. I’ve always done hair and there were times when [braids] weren’t really as popular and I didn’t do them as much, but [now] all these white girls are coming out wearing cornrows. Someone asked me, “Do you do boxer braids?” and I was like, “You mean box braids? What the hell are boxer braids?” And she was like, “Those braids that Kim Kardashian wears.” Kim Kardashian just has straight-back braids and they aren’t even done that well, they looked pretty popped, and popped in Chicago is not a good thing. Because [braids] are coming out in pop culture and being exploited as a trend in the fashion scene, I think it’s important for me to honor them, before there’s a time when people don’t even remember them as a traditional black art. Plenty of cultures do their own braid styling, but African braiding has its own very long chapter in the history of braiding. I felt charged to make them tangible in a way where I could create an icon that honors my experience with braiding, my love for my clients and a celebration of black feminine beauty coiffeur in my own words, in my own images outside of magazines.

witch tip:

if you are holding on to anger towards someone (especially a person who is no longer in your life), sit in a quiet place, burn your favorite incense, and write that person a letter.  write down every single thought and emotion you feel towards that person. when you are done, burn the letter in a cauldron or fireproof bowl.  as you burn it, repeat out loud “you no longer have power in my life” until the letter has turned to ash.  collect the ash and use it to make black salt.

Let me tell you something. You only think you’re not a Beyonce fan. You may even really not desire to be one for any number of valid reasons. But listen, all you need is one song. I guarantee you. Just one song that hits you in the chest and you will dive into her catalog like your last name is Phelps. And you will be overcome with a sense of having wasted years missing out for no good reason. And you, calm & collected, not really too excitable about most things because “been there, done that” you, will lose all of your composure at her show. She will do some song that may not mean much to others but speaks to you on a spiritual level and you will lose yourself. You will ascend. You won’t even understand how this is the song that did it. And then you’ll tell others. “Nah bruh but Beyonce’s really an icon though and I get why.” She’s not Michael, Prince, Whitney, or Janet

But Michael wasn’t Prince. Prince wasn’t Whitney. Whitney wasn’t Janet.

They were all completely different types of icons. Hell…Janet’s star shines entirely differently than Michael’s did.

So it only solidifies Beyonce’s status that you can’t really say she’s like any of those others. That’s the damn point.
