It was always so pleasant to hear Squid talk about the ocean. Remus silently wished that he’d one day find something he was half as passionate about. “Absolutely gorgeous.” He responded warmly before removing his shoes and setting them on the dock beside himself. “Today’s a good day.” He responded to her rather broad question. There had been some incredible ups and downs since he had last seen Squid but he was currently trying to focus more on the ‘now’ than he had in the past. “But what about you? I was always curious as to what you’d do after school. Figured it would be ocean related but never filled out the specifics.” His toes slipped into the water, kicking gently.

The beam that lit up Squid’s face might have suggested to someone else that the object being called gorgeous was her. Alas, she was just thrilled that one of her closest friends, who she hadn’t seen in far too long, thought her most favorite thing in the world was gorgeous. Squid noticed the direct answer to the question of how he’d been. There was a lot of space to cover that wasn’t today, but she wasn’t going to push him. If he wanted to talk about it, he would. “I’m working for the ministry of magic. Aquatic creature control and liaison. I get to spend a lot of time going to oceans, lakes and swamps.” Her toes wiggled as a fish took a tentative bite at her heels to see if there was any food to be had. At the movement it sped past her into the dark of the dock. “Long hours, bad pay, but I like it. I get to advocate for those who don’t speak English.” She glanced at her friend. Shaggy and tired looking, it’s the only way she’d ever seen him. She wondered if he’d been eating. “What are you up to?”

“One of the most interesting things about the ocean,” Logan agreed. “Did you grow up along the shore or did you just discover the ocean and fall in love?” He swung his legs slightly, keeping his feet out of the water as he hadn’t taken his shoes off.

“I grew up along the shore, but would it be cheesy to say I fall in love with it every time I see it again?” Cheese master Squid. She cracked a smile. “What about you? Discoverer or liver?”

“’Lo,” Lily replied, popping the notebook beside her and leaning back on her arms. “I’m pretty good- busy, what with work and finishing up the wedding plans-” she gestured to the notebook- “but I can’t really complain about that, can I?” She smiled excitedly; she couldn’t help herself. “How are you?”

Squid blinked staring at Lily’s face. That wasn’t a happy face, was it? Happy tone? Joke? Serious? What if she needed help? Hadn’t James had a bit of a bullying streaking. Panic started to blossom in her, was she remembering that right? Didn’t he pick on that Snape kid? Or had it been the other way around? She didn’t know much about either of them. But then Lily was talking about the wedding, and was that an invitation. Squid let out a small sigh. Joke. Not serious. Her mother always did say she took life too seriously. “Oh, really? Thank you for the invitation.” She’d never been to a wedding before. “When is it?”

“That, and the other dock down the way was all full-up of sailors. Not the fit sort, either. That I could have gotten behind. Rather, the we’ve-earned-ourselves-the-right-to-a-foul-attitude sort, and let me just tell you I get enough of that at work to not go seeking it out in my leisure.”

Squid let out a snort of laughter in stark contrast to the blank façade she wore on it. “The only time sailors get water is when the water comes for them. Other than that I don’t think they like it so much. Maybe it’s one of those things where they think they’re getting clean just by looking at it. Or perhaps they know that the salt water would dry their skin and their not about to start using lotion.” Squid squinted in the direction of the closest dock, the one full of sailors. Maybe with a well-placed spell they’d fall into the water. Ha.

Sora raised both eyebrows, unable to raise just one, at the statement about muggles. “Well, yes, but it’s not their fault they can’t use the same methods of transportation as us.” There were other factors in the increasing pollution, though she believed it could be decreased if muggles were able to transport as wizards did. “I’ve never read it. How does it end?” She asked before taking a seat, assuming that the ongoing conversation was permission to do so.

“I guess that’s true.” Squid allowed. “But it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be more conscious of their actions. The ocean is an economy of it’s own, everyone on the planet should be helping it flourish, instead of using it as a dumping ground and a hunting ground that destroys populations and ruins the lives of” She lifted her fingers to give the next word air quote “”inconsequential” life forms.” Her eyes moved back to the ocean, trying to see past the serface and see into the depths. “The captain, who risked everything to hunt his one great whale, was dragged into the depths of the ocean. Killed by what he was trying to kill.”

                The circles under her eyes stood out as she walked down the corridors, trying her best to keep her head down. After a long, albeit amusing, Saturday night, the last thing Jeanie wanted to do was be in at work before noon. Apparently they’d had a lead on one of their more stubborn cases, and instead of calling in a young Auror, or perhaps even an older one, the boss chose her. Really, she should see it as a compliment, and maybe it’ll feel like one once she’s got some food in stomach.                 Even with her eyes mostly on the floor, Jean expertly weaves her way through the crowds at the Ministry, just as she’s done a hundred times before. So when an unseen obstacle presents itself, she narrowly escapes it by coming to a stop. Her eyes roll as she moves past the kid, likely a new intern, pushing a cart way too big for him.                 Upon seeing someone familiar, Jeanie catches up to them. “Hey,” she says, smiling faintly the other. “What’s got you in here on a Sunday morning?”

Files needed to be water proofed. Squid reminded herself as she double checked the files clutched in her hand. What was the spell for that? Shit… She’d only used it a hundred times now. A large yawn escaped her lips. As the newest member of Aquatic Creature Control and Liaison she got to do all of the boring work no one else wanted to do. Like prep files and review contracts. Then she got to write it in a nice little summary so her seniors knew what was happening by form of small memo. She couldn’t wait to control this department.

Water proof the files, she reminded herself, stepping carefully through the hallway. A voice caught her attention, and Squid turned to find herself faced with a familiar face. “Oh, hello Jeanie.” Squid managed to stammer out. “I’m here prepping for the merfolk delegations.” Absently her free hand pointed towards the files she clutched. “What are you doing here?”

“Don’t knock it till you try it,” Marcella tipped her chin up, all faux defiance, but her frown wasn’t even remotely believable; there was too much humour in her eyes. Her hand curled around her container, she gave the cup a good shake. “Peach juice and green tea. I know it sounds nasty, I know, I know. But don’t knock it until you try it.”

Squid had never been good at reading facial expressions, she normally took people at word value on what they said to express who they felt about a situation. This situation was telling her she was going to end up trying peach juice and green tea. She guessed it didn’t sound too bad… That was a lie. It sounded disgusting. “Am I supposed to drink it hot or cold? Don’t two healthy drinks in one concoction cancel each other out to make it dangerous?”

It was technically Saturday morning, and technically they should have closed a half hour ago. But all employees been informed, none too politely, that if there were still a dozen patrons in the bar at midnight, then they stayed open for another hour. Fabian had, obviously, asked if this meant they’d be paid overtime. It didn’t. 

He didn’t mind working at The Hippogriff and Healer he conceded to himself, as he wiped down the bar. He didn’t even mind working til the wee hours of the morning. In fact, it was in many ways an improvement on his previous job with the Administrative Registration Department at the Ministry. The only real problem was that it was a permanent reminder that he was not very far away from being one of the people sitting on the other side of an East London bar at one in the morning, with nowhere to go, and no one to see, and nothing to do but consume as much alcohol as possible. Actually, Fabian didn’t know how well he’d go with the last point, since he was rather short of cash at present and he couldn’t see that changing very quickly. 

He looked at the clock for the fourth time in as many minutes. The tables had all cleared ages ago, and he’d wiped them down and swept underneath almost as soon as they’d emptied. The only customers left were sitting up at the bar, or leaning up against it in the case of the man on the far end. None of the few still there were very talkative, and they were at the point in the night (or morning) where they were contemplatively swirling their glasses, rather than giving him something to do by ordering more. 

“Last drinks,” he announced to the room at large. “We’ll be closing at one.”

There were many people who said they found redemption in the bottom of a glass. What redemption there was to be found there, Squid wasn’t sure. Not that she needed to be redeemed from anything, but there she sat, blue eyes fixed steadily on the bottom of a long finished empty glass that she didn’t let the bar keep take back yet. In her other hand was the current drink, currently forgotten in her search.

It’d been a long week at work, negotiations with the merfolk of the Atlantic were currently open and she’d been attending deliberation after deliberation. On the down low, she agreed with everything the merfolk were saying. As a ministry official she agreed with what the ministry was saying. This was going to be a much needed two days off. She remembered the second drink in her hand and drowned it in a solid motion. Once the dark liquid was gone from the glass she lowered it looking at the bottom of that one. Nothing there.

Last drinks

If eyes could stumble, her eyes did. They fell over everything as they went in search of the barkeep who, since she was sitting in the center of the counter, wasn’t far from her. “Last drinks.” She agreed, her words slurring as she pushed the two glasses towards him. “Better make them a double. Just in case.” Just in case of what, she didn’t know. “What time is it now?” Time alluded her, it’d been early in the night when she entered an surely it couldn’t have been later than ten. What was this one nonsense the bar keep at mentioned.

Eyes rolled upwards as Squid took a look at the giant knit shark hat she’d been sporting for the day. “My mother gave me this.” She stated plainly. “What’s so stupid about it?”

Another wave of nausea hit her. Narcissa found herself heading in another direction, looking for a fresh air and wait for this to pass. It hadn’t been easier, like everyone told her. She closed her eyes as she leaned toward the edge, steadied herself as the wind gently blows her hair away from her face. A distinct sound from nearby startled her at the slightest. “Maybe. I’ve never been here before.” She said, half shouting, hoping that her voice could reach the girl.

“Lost?” Blue eyes left the lines of text they’d been prusing to find the blonde standing on the dock. “You lucked out. This is one of the best places to end up.” Squid’s gaze turned, scanning over the water in front of her. “It’s nice today.”

Logan glanced over at the newcomer, shrugging slightly. “Reminds me of home,” he told her, taking a drink and looking back out over the water. “What about you?”

Squid had to keep the words that first sprang to mind from her mouth. Saying things like ‘The ocean is my home’ is exactly how she landed with a nickname like Squid. Also made people think a person’s crazy. “I find it relaxing. I like the view. Plus who knows what creatures are lurking right under the surface.” She wiggled her toes in the water.

“Individuals are to blame for doing that, yeah, but also corporations and their factories are more to blame. But there’s not much we can do about that.” Splendora sighed, she did like to keep nature intact but there was little to be done about those in high positions of power and their wastage. “It’s just one of those days, you know? Like those days you just want to go out at night.” She explained with a slight shrug. “What are you reading?”

“Muggles, I think, are the most to blame for it.” Squid murmured, a frown tugging at her lips. Disgust filled her at the thought of their factories ruining what was the most beautiful thing in the world. How did money justify such horrible actions? Plus there was the whaling problem. No one needed that. “Yeah.” For Squid everyday was a day to spend at the ocean, she could definitely relate to ‘just one of those days.’ “Moby Dick.” Another example of the stupidity of muggles. She held the book up, cover pointed towards her companion. “I like the way it ends.”

Squid moved her feet through the water, causing small splashes around her feet but being sure not to get Lily with any of the water. “Oh, congrats on that.” She mumbled. “You and James right?” She’d never been up to date with who’s with who. “Is it going to be a big ceremony? I’m good. Just enjoying the day.” She her eyes scanned the horizon, taking in the water.

“For the sea,” Dirk corrected. “I’ve been able to apparate for ages and only just realised I still hadn’t used it to come to the seaside without the two hour journey to get there. Do you mind if I—?” He trailed off, indicating the space next to her on the dock.

“The sea is the best place around.” Squid admitted absently, letting her book slide shut slowly as her eyes made contact with Dirk. “I don’t mind.” Squid answered, after looking down at the spot. “More people should take advantage of their ability to apparate to visit the ocean. Maybe then they’d remember to take care of it.”

Splendora was nosy, but she tried not to be caught when actively trying to get information. This was one of the times she had failed and had been noticed. “I don’t normally come here either, so there’s that.” She replied. Everything in her resisted her urge to spew a cheesy pick up line in response to the question. “Somewhat, the ocean isn’t as pretty as it used to be though. Aren’t your feet cold?“

“That would because of pollution. If people only understood that dumping their trash in the ocean is ruining it.” Squid let out a long sigh, letting her book fall to the dock beside her. “Trash just doesn’t go away because you don’t see it.” She wiggled her toes in the water contemplating if they were cold. “No. It feels nice to have the water around them. If you don’t normally come here, what brings you here today?” Curiosity had gotten the better of her.
