“What are you talking about? I’m perfectly calm.”
“Hm... your tone a second ago didn’t sound that way. What are you trying to do?”
Eggs. Don’t forget the eggs this time.
“You aren’t planning on ruining someone’s house with them, are you?”
“So if he used apparation, but no, there’s wards. Damn it.”
“Not sure what you’re on about, but it’d probably help you to take some deep breaths and chill for a few seconds.”
“Oh, no. Sadly I’m not very funny. I like the trivia ones Muggles have, but I don’t like the Muggle ones because I don’t know Muggle facts. We should have trivia shows.”
“Muggle facts aren’t that difficult, maybe if we cannot make our own trivia shows you could try learning Muggle trivia. A wizard trivia show sounds fun, though. Not sure who you could pitch it to.”
“Oh, I research all sorts of things. Many magical maladies have no cures, or ineffective cures. My main project is attempting to alleviate the effects of the Cruciatus Curse. With everything that’s happening, you know?” She noticed the girl fidgeting, and exclaimed, “Oh, I’m so sorry, those must be getting heavy! I didn’t mean to interrupt you! Please, have a lovely day.”
“I see. I thought research for such things would need to be done in a practical manner rather than in books, or are there topics in the books that are linked closely to the practical work you need?” She asked, but the question she gave out even confused her. It was too late to go back and word it better so she hoped the woman would understand it. “No, no, it’s okay. I collected too many anyway, it’s not your fault.”
“I don’t know, that’s what I’m saying. We should have game shows.”
“Oh, I thought you were about to tell a joke. Well, what sort of game shows do you want to see?”

“Muggles, I think, are the most to blame for it.” Squid murmured, a frown tugging at her lips. Disgust filled her at the thought of their factories ruining what was the most beautiful thing in the world. How did money justify such horrible actions? Plus there was the whaling problem. No one needed that. “Yeah.” For Squid everyday was a day to spend at the ocean, she could definitely relate to ‘just one of those days.’ “Moby Dick.” Another example of the stupidity of muggles. She held the book up, cover pointed towards her companion. “I like the way it ends.”
Sora raised both eyebrows, unable to raise just one, at the statement about muggles. “Well, yes, but it’s not their fault they can’t use the same methods of transportation as us.” There were other factors in the increasing pollution, though she believed it could be decreased if muggles were able to transport as wizards did. “I’ve never read it. How does it end?” She asked before taking a seat, assuming that the ongoing conversation was permission to do so.
“Perhaps I wasn’t expecting you to be so cynical,” Lily stated flatly, eyes staring to narrow as a prickle of irritation began to hum beneath the surface of her skin. “I could, but actually I don’t much feel like flogging a dead horse today, and I get the distinct impression nothing I might say would make a difference. It’s no skin off my nose, either way.”
Instead of replying, she simply waited for the woman to finish speaking then shrugged. Was it really that hard to understand that no-one would just change their mind because someone said to do so? “I wasn’t asking you to do it now, just wondering why you claim to know what you’re talking about but the best you can offer is ‘that one is terrible, this one isn’t’. That doesn’t exactly scream knowledgeable.”
“Why don’t wizards have game shows?”
Unsure if it was a joke or an actual question, Splendora replied. “I don’t know, why don’t they?”
“I suppose, when you sink about it, books are terribly fragile creatures, are zey not?” She bobbed her head a bit, eyes lighting up with excitement. “Oh, I am ‘ere for my research! Zere is always somezing ‘elpful in zese shelves, when I am particularly … stuck, on a work project.”
Sora nodded in reply, agreeing. Books were definitely easy to destroy in various ways. “What project are you working on?” She asked, shifting the comics in her arms slightly as they started weighing more as time went on.
“That would because of pollution. If people only understood that dumping their trash in the ocean is ruining it.” Squid let out a long sigh, letting her book fall to the dock beside her. “Trash just doesn’t go away because you don’t see it.” She wiggled her toes in the water contemplating if they were cold. “No. It feels nice to have the water around them. If you don’t normally come here, what brings you here today?” Curiosity had gotten the better of her.
“Individuals are to blame for doing that, yeah, but also corporations and their factories are more to blame. But there’s not much we can do about that.” Splendora sighed, she did like to keep nature intact but there was little to be done about those in high positions of power and their wastage. “It’s just one of those days, you know? Like those days you just want to go out at night.” She explained with a slight shrug. “What are you reading?”
“You could,” Lily shrugged, “if you feel like wasting your time. Anyway, I’m only trying to offer some friendly advice, since I kinda know what I’m talking about, but you certainly don’t have to listen to it.”
“Aren’t you also wasting your time, then? If I really wanted to buy this one, do you think it’d be that easy to convince me otherwise?” She asked, genuinely curious about why the other felt that simply saying it was terrible would make her put down the record. “If you know what you’re talking about, surely you would give a more detailed explanation about why that one is better than this one?”
“Zat is true. Ze paper zey are made of tends to be very flimsy, non?” She smiled at the question, shaking her head. “I am afraid I do not ‘ave nearly enough free time to pick up an ‘abit so time consuming as comics. Zey are always releasing new ones, so you are never done reading!” Not to mention they expected quite a bit more money than she felt the glossy ten-pagers were worth.
“I suppose. Though, regular paper gets bent just as easy too.” She mirrored the smile she had been presented with. “Actually, they only release one a month. Much less time consuming than you’d think. Yeah they release a lot, but they do stop publishing certain story-lines. What books are you buying then?”
“This is my hobby, and it leads directly into two of my other hobbies. They’re all interconnected. It’s all a grand scheme of mine to find proper amounts of entertainment.” What Doc was trying to say was, if he found someone willing, the coffee shop would lead right into his favorite activity, which was shagging.
“Your hobby is to watch people drink coffee throughout the day? Seems equally parts odd and sad." She didn’t bother hiding the obvious judgement and took a few mouthfuls of her coffee. “You should at least buy something out of courtesy for the staff who put up with your creepy antics.”
“It’s either I sit here and observe the general atmosphere, or I sit at home and twiddle my thumbs. If I’m not at least doing something then I go absolutely mad. I’ll never understand people who are fine with just doing nothing.”
“There are other options, like getting an actual hobby.” She suggested before taking a sip of the coffee that was still a little too hot. “Most people don’t just sit and do nothing, there are things to occupy yourself with if you’re home alone.” Splendora was a professional at actually doing nothing. Naps, food and being easily amused were the key.
