It wasn’t uncommon for Steve Harrington to find himself where he does now. It’s a Friday night, and he’s sitting in his best friend’s bedroom.
She’s on the phone with her boyfriend, laughing at some stupid joke he told, surely. As he sits on the carpeted floor, he glares daggers at the phone, like it personally offended him. At some point, he realizes he must look ridiculous, and stands to take a breather, mumbling something about going to the bathroom and quickly disappearing into her ensuite bathroom. When he stares at himself in the mirror, he wonders what it is that John has that he doesn’t.
It’s not like he’s known her for years. Not like he was there to pick her up when she’d fall when they’d learned to ride bikes. And, Jesus, John moved to Hawkins, what, less than a year ago? He finds himself shaking his head, as if it’ll shake the thoughts out of it. He doesn’t mean to talk badly about John (lie, he loves it), but he knows his best friend can do better. She could do no wrong, in his eyes. She’s always nice, even when she doesn’t have to be, and she’s way too pretty for her current boyfriend, as he likes to call the guy. When he finally returns to her room, she’s hung up the phone, and she’s perched on her desk chair, fiddling with the stereo she’d just gotten for her birthday.
“Took you long enough,” she says, tongue poking out the side of her mouth, a habit that meant she was concentrating.
“You were talking to John, anyway. Doubt you missed me,” he says, and it comes out a little sharper than he meant it.
“Jesus, Harrington, I know you’re jealous, but you don’t have to make it so obvious,” she laughs. It’s a joke, she thinks.
He huffs out a laugh, trying to sound as natural as possible, because to him, it most definitely isn’t a joke.
Their night goes the way it always does, they gossip about whatever’s going on in their small town. At some point, they make it to the living room for a movie, and he falls asleep on the couch, like he always does.
“Wake up, Steve,” she yawns, “you’re gonna wake up with a sore back again.”
“What?” He mumbles, voice thick with sleep when she shakes him awake.
“I said, wake up, so you can go sleep in the guest bedroom,” she replies.
He groans. This is the way it always goes. And he knows in the morning, he’ll be thankful she woke him up. And he’s okay with it, because at least in those 5 minutes she wakes him, he can pretend it’s her waking him up in the mornings. He lands on the soft mattress of the bedroom just across from hers, and he falls back asleep after mumbling something along the lines of good night, love you.
He dreams of what it would be like to sleep next to her.
He wakes up early, roused by the light streaming in through the curtains. When he comes to, he hears a deep voice coming from the kitchen. Of course John’s here at 8:30 in the morning on a Saturday. He hears her laugh and he thinks this must be some cruel joke. When he walks out of the bedroom, John straightens.
“Morning, Stevie!” she chirps, a lilt in her voice that only seems to materialize around John. Steve doesn’t miss the way John’s face flinches into an expression close to disgust, maybe?
“Hey, birdie,” he replies, “John.”
John gives him a polite nod, but he can’t hide the way he tenses at the nickname Steve uses for his girlfriend. Steve has always been John’s one reservation about his relationship. He’s always thought (correctly) that Steve is in love with her. But, she’s made it abundantly clear that Steve’s part of the package. So he swallows his pride, most of the time.
Steve leaves, eventually, satisfied with the way he’d gotten under John’s skin, even if just by existing. He calls Robin when he gets home, and tells her about the whole thing.
“Someday soon you’re gonna have to come clean, dingus,” she says, ever the voice of reason.
“Yeah, well, I have to wait until she doesn’t have a boyfriend. Gosh, Robin, that guy sucks, I mean, obviously he doesn’t even know she likes sleeping in on Saturdays, because if he did, he wouldn’t have showed up to her apartment at the asscrack of dawn-”
“It wasn’t the asscrack of dawn, Steve. It was 8:30 in the morning. You’re ridiculous,” she laughs.
She’s right, and he’s totally fucked.
——
Over at his best friend’s apartment, things are going south.
“It’s not my fault you’re so insecure in this relationship you think I’m fucking my best friend, John,” she sighs.
It’s not an uncommon fight for him to pick. Recently, he’s been doing that a lot.
“Oh, well, forgive me for assuming that when you literally won’t see me on Fridays because you’re with him,” he snarls.
“Jesus, John! We’ve been best friends since we were kids! Do you expect me to just cut that off for you?” she says, a little louder now.
“I expect this relationship to be your priority, not Steve fucking Harrington! I mean, that guy totally peaked in high school, I don’t see what you like so much about hi-”
“Enough, John! If you’re gonna pick this fight every single time you see him, then maybe this isn’t gonna work out,” she sighs finally.
“Oh, yeah? Fine, then. Have your best friend. You obviously don’t need me,” he says, already stomping away. She doesn’t stop him.
The apartment is silent after that. It stays like that for hours. She thinks maybe John was right, she’s too close to Steve to have a boyfriend.
——
That night, she’s determined to forget about all of it. Despite not being in high school anymore, house parties in Hawkins were the most common form of entertainment on a Saturday night. Blame it on the way the people in this town seem to always get stuck in the past.
It was a plan she’d made with Steve and Robin, head to their old classmate’s house and drink the night away, music surely too loud and yet not loud enough, house bound to be sticky and sweaty.
By the time Steve’s picking her up, she’s been in her own head long enough.
“Hey Steve,” she sighs, slipping into the passenger seat of his beamer.
“Birdie,” he smiles, “is John coming tonight?”
She sighs.
“He broke up with me, I think.”
Dumbass, he thinks.
“What?” He says, not bothering to turn the car back on, head panning to look over at her. She’s looking at him with glassy eyes now.
“Yeah, I dunno,” she sniffles. “Something stupid. But I’m pretty sure he broke up with me,” she says, voice going thin.
“He’s a total bonehead, okay? I mean, who would ever, ever, dream of letting you go?” He says, sounding more sincere than he meant to.
“Besides, he didn’t even know how to treat you well,” he huffs, too caught up in his own head to notice how the tears have started to spill out of her eyes.
“Don’t cry, hey,” he says, voice far softer now. His hand instinctively reaches out to hers.
It’s not like this is the first time he’s done this. She’s had boyfriends before. There was Richie, the tall guy with the glasses, who’d moved away, so the breakup was only natural. There had been Anthony. He was even worse than John, somehow. He’d cheated on her, and it broke her for a good couple of weeks. Naturally, he always perfectly played the role of the caring best friend, reassuring words spilling out of his perfectly plump lips, he wasn’t all that, and he didn’t even deserve you, birdie. Now, in his car, he says the same things. And every time, he’s hoped he could just tell her how he’d treat her so much better. But he never does.
“I don’t wanna go to that party,” she sniffles finally.
“That’s fine, doll. We don’t have to,” he says, voice warm and smooth. She’d always found comfort in his voice. Ever since they were kids, even when his voice was squeaky and higher in pitch than her own. When his voice finally dropped (kind of, voice cracks had always been his worst enemy), he’d started to tell her she sounded like a songbird, compared to his now deep voice. And thus, the nickname birdie stuck.
Inside her apartment, Steve calls Robin to let her know about the change of plans, and immediately settles on the couch with his best friend, comforting her to her heart’s content.
“Stevie?” she speaks in a voice so quiet it might have gotten lost in the hum of the fan if he hadn’t been so focused on her.
“Yeah, birdie?” he answers.
“Do you think we’re too… close?” she asks.
His stomach drops, a little. That’s not what he’d expected.
“What do you mean, doll?” he asks, trying not to give his nervousness away. It doesn’t work, though. It never has, with her.
“It’s just… John would always pick fights about how you sleep over here all the time. About how you and I are too close,” she huffs, realizing how stupid it sounds out loud.
“It’s not… I don’t think so, birdie. We’ve been friends forever. S’not fair that a guy wants you to stop being friends with me,” he says softly, enjoying the way she seems to melt into him effortlessly.
“Besides,” he steels his nerves with a shuddery breath before speaking again,
“S’not like any of those boyfriends actually knew how to treat you well.”
A silence settles over them, different from the comfortable silence they’ve grown to used to in each other’s company. She knows he’s right. Before she can say anything, he’s speaking again. Now or never, he figures.
“I don’t wanna say the wrong thing here, birdie,” he stops for a second.
“I don’t think- You know I love you, right?” He asks carefully. She nods, trying to turn her head from where it rests on his shoulder to look at him.
“I can’t keep pretending I don’t hate every single one of your boyfriends. They don’t know you, not how I do. Birdie, I swear,” he swallows, “I know I can be better. And I hope, God, I hope more than anything on this Earth that I’m not fucking this up by saying this, but,”
He doesn’t get to finish.
“I know you’d treat me better. I’ve always been scared you didn’t feel the same way, though,” she replies, eyes wide and full of way too much love. She’s looking at him in a way best friends don’t look at each other.
Steve stares at her the way he always has. His eyes are soft and deep, eyes she's gotten lost in more times that she'll ever admit. He looks at her like she's just handed him the world. And maybe she has.
“Don’t have to say anything,” she hums. And then, her fingers are curling into his polo, and she’s turning to face him now, shuffling quietly onto his lap, sideways.
“Can stop me if you don’t want this,” she says softly, before leaning in to kiss him.
The summer before high school, they watched the Fourth of July fireworks together at Steve’s family’s lake house somewhere in Northern Indiana. They both had braces, and she’d recently started wearing glasses, before she knew what contacts were. Their legs dangled over the dock, and she had said something about how she was nervous her first kiss would be with some random boy who didn’t actually know her. So as the fireworks burst overhead, they shared their first kiss, nothing more than a nervous peck.
This was like that, only a million times better.
Steve thought his heart might actually pound out of his chest. There were fireworks popping in his chest like those on that Fourth of July. When he finally came to his senses, he kissed back with an intensity that he didn’t even expect himself.
He’d come a long way since the scrawny 13-year-old that had kissed his best friend cautiously. Now, he knew to slide his hands around her waist, to use one of them to cup her cheek. He knew now that not all kisses stopped at a peck, that, in fact, most of the time, they went far beyond that.
Most importantly, he knew that this kiss meant something more. And that he wouldn’t be letting go of that, not now, not ever.

Accident? - Tom "Iceman" Kazansky x fem!Mitchell reader
•─────────────•°•❀•°•─────────────•
Captain "Anarchy" Mitchell was walking back into the doors of Top Gun a year after graduation to teach her brother's class. She knew what she was getting into, but what she didn't know was there was a certain aviator ready to ruin her life. Or maybe to make it much better. Accidents can go either way, can't they?

“What a pleasure it is to see you again, Admiral Cain. And how exciting to be back here, I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since graduation,” said Y/n, shaking his hand with a courteous smile.
“The pleasure is mine, Captain,” he replied.
It’s not like the admiral hated her, but there were many reasons why her call sign was Anarchy. All of which he had gotten to know only a year prior when she was at Top Gun.
The excitement she felt walking through those doors once again was unparalleled. The past year had been filled with deployments and she was very excited to, undoubtedly, be asked to teach this year’s batch of fresh new pilots. She remembered how it had felt, being told that she was going to Top Gun.
“Anarchy, Jaws, come in please,” the Commander on the carrier had said from inside his office. It wasn’t very uncommon for Y/n and her RIO, Jaws, to get called into the office. They were always causing trouble up in the air and down on the ground because of their stunts and desire to feel as free from any rules as possible. The one thing absolutely no one could deny was how much of a power duo they were, and that they were the one of the best pilot and RIO pairs the Navy had had in a long time.
The two exchanged glances as they had done time and time again. “Ladies first,” said Jaws with a teasing smile as he pushed the door open for her.
They saluted the commander, but he ordered them to be at ease. “Take a seat,” he sighed.
“There’s no getting around it, you two are the best pair on this carrier. Though your behavior may not always be the best, I’ve decided to let you both have this opportunity because it would be unfair to give it to anyone else. You two are going to Top Gun,” he said. The rest of the day was a blur, the only thing Anarchy remembered was the absolute joy and excitement she felt in respects to training with the best of the best.
She had the upper hand, this time around. She was no longer the ingenue, she was no longer the naive aviator who believed she knew everything there was to know about the iron beasts she handled. Now, she would get to watch as all the pilots who strolled in this year slowly discovered they weren’t the geniuses they thought they were, and to her, there were few things in life more satisfying than that.
A couple nights after she arrived at the seaside town, her phone started ringing.
“Hello?” she said.
“Hi honey! It’s mom,” Y/n’s mom answered.
“Hi mom! Is everything alright? How are you?” Y/n answered.
“Everything is good, I just have some news to tell you. Well, Pete has some news to tell you. I was just calling to tell you that I gave him your apartment’s number so he could call you himself,” she said.
“Oh? What happened?” asked Anarchy. She was a little worried considering her brother was just like her when it came to bending the rules to see just how far they would go until they broke. But judging by the tone of her mother’s voice, she knew it was something good.
“I can’t spoil it, hon! I’m going to go so you get his call. I love you, buh-bye!” she said.
“Bye, mom. I love you too,” y/n answered, setting the phone down. A few minutes later, the phone started ringing again.
“Mav? Is that you?” she asked instinctively.
“It is, Anny. How’d you know?” he asked, a little confused.
“Sisterly instinct,” she answered without missing a beat.
“Suuuureee,” he said, sarcastically.
“Anyway, I have something to tell you,” he said. She could hear the smile he had on his face through the phone, picturing her younger brother’s face. She really did miss him a lot, and she couldn’t wait for the next time they got to see each other.
“Uh-huhhh,” she said, opening the fridge door to get a bottle of water.
“Goose and I are going to Top Gun!” he said, enthusiastically.
“Oh my, Mav! That’s amazing! Congratulations,” she said. The excitement and pride in her voice shone through. Nothing would ever make her happier than one of her little brother’s achievements, and she really couldn’t be prouder of him.
“Since we’re on the topic of revealing stuff, I’m sure you’re wondering why mom gave you the phone number to some random apartment,” she said.
“Yes… so you did talk to her,” the second part whispered under his breath.
“Well, I’m teaching Top Gun this year,” she said.
“Wait… So you mean to tell me… I’m… We’re… You’re going to be my teacher?” he asked. Y/n couldn’t tell if her brother was happy, confused, disappointed, or simply processing the information.
“I mean, it’s not like I haven’t taught you pretty much everything you know about aviation,” she said.
”Oh this is gonna be so good!“ He exclaimed. The siblings talked for a little while longer and laughed together, excited for the next couple of weeks.
Then, the day finally arrived. The planes were coming in with all the aviators at the local airport because it was their responsibility to get their asses to the base.
Y/n had been running around all morning, making sure everything was ready for all the pilots coming in. Unlike her brother, she was prone to panicking on the ground whenever she had something to plan out.
The first couple of pilots started coming in through the front doors of Top Gun, and she was watching from afar, from a place she could see those who came in and went out but they couldn’t see her. None really caught her eye, none until a certain blond with eyes that could kill.
He walked in with an air of confidence that she already liked. All pilots had to be at least a little bit cocky and arrogant. He was very much both of those things, and he had reason to be. That blond hair looked straight from a magazine. And those eyes. God, those eyes. They were a sort of blue she had never seen before, a blue so powerful and deep that it froze you right in place. His eyes were icicles that petrified you and saw right through you in a heartbeat.
She thought no one could see her, but he looked right at her, giving her a grin and a wink before walking away.
She composed herself quickly but forgot about the encounter momentarily when she saw Maverick and Goose coming in through the doors.
“Boys!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms around both of them. Goose was like a younger brother to her as well because of the relationship he had with Maverick.
“I missed you a little bit too much,” said Maverick.
“Trust me, I missed you too,” she replied,
“And you, Goose! How’s my southern boy?” she asked.
“Better than ever, Anny,” he answered, exaggerating his southern drawl just a little bit for her. She giggled and hugged them again.
That night, she decided to infiltrate the bar and pass as a normal person that had nothing to do with Top Gun. She half hoped she wouldn’t run into the guy from earlier, who she had seen wandering around the base. The other half of her was praying that she would bump into him, maybe on the dance floor, and they would dance together. Or maybe she’d bump into him by the bathrooms, opening the door and leaving a little bit too fast and crashing into him as they were both leaving. But maybe he wouldn’t even be there, maybe these aviators were going to break the tradition of meeting up for drinks on the night before Top Gun.
She had gone incognito most of the day because it was orientation and settling in for the pilots. They all went to their on-base housing to deposit their things and then they were off to receive a welcome session with the admiral. The rest of the day, they had free.
“Y/n!” Said Maverick.
“What’s up, Pete?” She asked with a smile.
“We’re going to the Hard Deck, later tonight. You in?” He asked.
“I see I taught you well, you remembered tradition. And, of course I’m in!” She said.
“The guys and I’ll be there at 8:00,” he said with a grin.
“The guys and I? Damn, Mav, seems like Goose has really been working his charm to make friends for you both,” she teased.
“See you there,” he said, walking away with a laugh.
Driving home, she turned the radio up and rolled the windows down. The sun was setting on the California coast, and she was thankful for the oceanfront apartment complex she had found. She pulled into the parking lot, and once she was out of the car, she stared at the gorgeous sunset that painted the sky all hues of orange and pink through her sunglasses. Once the sun was hidden and the sky had gone a shade of blue, she walked into the building, taking the elevator up to her floor and then sliding her keys into the lock.
She threw the keys into the little dish by the door and walked directly into her bedroom.
“Let’s see,” she whispered to herself. Shuffling through her wardrobe, she searched for an outfit to go to the Hard Deck in. She debated the style: formal or casual? Should she wear her Navy pins?
Once she’d decided on an outfit, a nice black dress was always a pretty safe bet for turning heads while simultaneously being pretty low key, she took a quick shower and did her makeup and hair. Finally, she got dressed and put on a pair of simple heels and pulled a bomber jacket from her closet, as the summer breeze could potentially be too much at some point.
She decided to walk to the Hard Deck, since it wasn’t very far from her apartment. Yet, she started to regret her decision once she realized that she might hate herself later when she’s walking back home, probably at least a little tipsy and her feet definitely sore.
Anarchy walked into the bar, looking around but flying under the radar to check out the aviators. She recalled some of their faces from earlier, but before she could get a good look at the rest of the pilots, the bartender started talking to her.
“Y/n! What a pleasant surprise,” he said.
“It’s nice to see you again, Rich. Feels like a while since I’ve been back here,” she answered with a smile.
“So tell me, how’s life been for you? And how come you’re back?” He asked. They caught each other up, reminiscing upon the year prior when they had first met and all the nights she had ended up in the bar.
Lost in the conversation with Rich, she had failed to fully notice that there was now someone sat next to her.
“Just a beer, please,” he said. Rich nodded and said something she couldn’t hear. She wasn’t sure whether it was because of the loud music, or the conversations, or maybe it was because the man sitting next to her was that blue eyed pilot she’d seen earlier.
He smiled at her, with intentions of coming off as warm and friendly, but Y/n couldn’t get over those freezing cold eyes.
“So, what brings you to the bar tonight?” He asked coolly.
“Friends were gathering here,” she replied, taking a sip from her drink. Y/n didn’t want to reveal to him that she was related to aviation or to Pete, so it seemed like a safe bet to pretend to be there with friends. Plus, she wasn’t entirely lying.
“But you’re all alone,” he began, “a pretty lady like you should never be all by herself.”
Anarchy laughed at the comment, trying to stay as calm as possible. But really, butterflies were swirling around in her stomach, her hands starting to get sweaty.
“Just needed a moment, I guess. Who are you, anyway?” She asked, switching the conversation.
“I’m Tom,” and then he paused, looking into her eyes, “better known as Iceman.”
It was probably one of the most fitting call signs she had heard. She raised her eyebrows and gave an approving nod.
“And you are?” He asked with a chuckle.
“I’m Y/n,” she said.
“You can’t fool me that easily, I can tell you’re a pilot, too,” he said.
“Fine, call sign Anarchy,” she answered. He didn’t have to know she’d be his teacher just yet. But something about his aura was so charming, there was something she couldn’t resist.
“Anarchy, huh? Well, would you like to come dance with me?” He asked, getting up and extending an arm to her.
She contemplated her options. She couldn’t deny that Iceman was very attractive. But she was a bit reluctant considering she would be his teacher. Ultimately, though, she took his hand, making up her mind that this would be a one time thing.
The issue was that this “one time thing’s” lifespan was extending with every touch of her waist, with each time he spun her around, and with every time his lips barely ghosted over her face.
“Well, Iceman, I’ll see you around,” she said, getting ready to leave.
“Can I at least have a phone number?” He asked.
“That won’t be necessary. Trust me,” she said with a wink. It wasn’t until then that she realized she hadn’t seen Maverick and Goose more than from afar, but in seconds, she felt two pairs of hands on her back, almost tackling her to the ground. But she was used to it, and immediately cracked a laugh at the sight of her two favorite pilots.
“Are you leaving, Y/n?” Asked Goose.
“Yea, I’m starting to get a little bit too tipsy. Can’t have my students meeting drunk me accidentally, and I really really do not need a hangover tomorrow morning,” she said, with a laugh while getting her jacket on.
“Good point. See you tomorrow, then, Captain Mitchell,” said Maverick, teasing his sister.
“Good night to you, Lieutenant Mitchell, Lieutenant Bradshaw,” she said, walking away. Before she made it out of the bar, though, she caught one more fleeting glance at Tom. He was sitting at the bar, taking a sip from a bottle of beer, holding her gaze ruthlessly. He refused to let go, but she broke away, turning instead to look up at the moonless sky above her.
I am so so sorry for going mia y'all, ive been super busy cause I go back to school next week and ive been finishing my summer stuff. ive also had like a bunch of meetings and appointments and stuff so yea, but I promise the iceman fic and another rooster one before the end of this week hehehe I had an idea for rooster of like pre tgm when reader and roos are teens cause I felt like writing something cute like that :)
An ex-aviator has very strict rules with herself about dating pilots. She was still working with them though, and between her job as a flight analyst and strategist as well as being a waitress at the Hard Deck on weekends, she sees a lot of them. One night, however, a specific pilot draws her attention and she is on the brink of breaking the rules for him ;)

Walking into the office on Monday morning had Y/n holding her breath and hoping she wouldn’t bump into the pilot she’d met at the Hard Deck.
She had just had her morning coffee and was scheduled to go to Maverick’s morning brief to the students in order to go over the strategies they had worked on with them. Out of courtesy, she had brought in a donut and picked up another coffee for Maverick on the way to the classroom he was in. She hoped to catch him before the rest of the aviators got there so she would have time to cool down before inevitably seeing the one she could not get her mind off of.
“What a great morning to fly, Captain Mitchell! I brought you a little something to get you started” she greeted him, relieved to see an empty classroom before them both.
“Indeed it is, and thank you so much,” he said with a smile.
The pilots began to walk into the classroom, taking their places. By the way they were arranging themselves, Y/n could begin to tell what each of their motivations and intentions were here. She liked the ones that sat up at the front, ready to tackle anything headfirst. When she was back here as a student, she was one of them, bursting at the seams with anticipation at the opportunity of being in the cockpit of one of those jets.
“Good morning, aviators. For your second day of training, we’ll be maximizing the estimated flight conditions of your mission and using them to your advantage. We’ll begin at the mildest the conditions may look on the day-of and slowly progress until we’ve seen the most extreme it may get. I’m sure you all understand the importance of making the most of what you have in relation to the shape of your plane as well as the conditions that surround you,” said Pete. This was Y/n’s cue to begin speaking.
“Captain Mitchell and I have been working on the best ways to pilot this mission and how to train you for anything you might encounter on that day. My name is Y/n Y/l/n, and I will be working hand in hand with you all from the ground in order to make sure you know what to expect,” she said, looking around the room. That’s when, in the second row, she noticed the guy from the Hard Deck, making her heart race a little and her breath hitch. This was going to be a long three weeks.
“Captain Y/l/n,” corrected Maverick. “She was one of the best students I ever had.”
She just laughed and continued with the lesson.
Once it was over, the pilots were leaving to go get into their planes and take them out for a spin. The software that she had designed for them allowed the ways in which the conditions might be to affect the plane as if they were really happening. She was heading back to her office until she felt a hand around her wrist.
“Y/n, you should really come see them,” said Maverick.
“You’re inviting me to watch the practice?” She asked.
“Yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing. You can watch them take off from the runway and then you can go to the tower to monitor them. Come on, it’s really a sight to behold,” he said.
“Alright, Maverick,” she answered.
Saluting the pilots one by one as they walked out into the sun and towards their respective F-18s, Y/n couldn’t help but smile as she remembered back when she was one of them. The mysterious aviator she had taken a liking to smiled at her, and she could have sworn she saw a wink, too.
Maverick was right: this was a show and she was incredibly glad to be able to watch it from a front row seat and in its full glory. She had a pair of headphones on that allowed her to listen in on the conversations the pilots were having, but she wasn’t hearing many words, mainly just noises that G-forces always seemed to coax out of people. She laughed, slightly glad she wasn’t the one having to feel all that pressure.
Once the whole crew was grounded, she went back into her office and got some final work done before heading out for the evening. It was 5:00 and she was ready to just get back to her small but comfortable ocean front home. For her, it was more than enough as she really had made it into her home.
The drive from the office was pretty uneventful, just the California sun beginning to hide beneath the horizon to go rise for someone else.
Slipping the keys into the lock, she pushed her front door open, she took off her shoes and left her purse hanging on the coat rack by the door. She also put her sunglasses down on the side table she had. She made her way into the bathroom, stepping into the shower and washing the day off of her. Once she was dressed in pijamas, she opened the sliding glass door to her small deck and backyard, listening intently to the crashing ocean waves that were right around the corner.
She then turned on her favorite show and cooked some dinner because she was starving. She was doing everything in her power to get rid of her feelings for a guy she didn’t even know the name of. She didn’t know his name because he hadn’t introduced himself. She could have found out by just asking or even looking at the sheet with the names of the pilots in the running to go on this mission. But not knowing his name was an attempt on her part to make him feel less real, more invisible.
Knowing his name would turn him into a tangible being, a part of her life. One she really rather ignore. But after trying many times, she knew he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The next day, she needed to go pick some things up from the Hard Deck during her lunch break as she had no time that week to meal prep and truthfully just wanted some of the Hard Deck’s famous ribs.
“Alright, I’m heading out to pick my food up. Does anyone need anything?” She asked while walking out of her office and as she was walking down the hallway. After a string of no, thank yous, she said goodbye and made her way to the parking lot. The offices had a direct exit to the staff spots but she had decided to take the long way in an attempt to catch the aviators in the air.
The offices were quiet, everyone was out on their lunch break and there were no classes in session for now. She was disappointed to look through the floor to ceiling windows in the classroom opposite the locker rooms and see all the F-18s parked in their hangars. This meant there was no one in the air and she wouldn’t get to see the pilots flying. Truthfully, this was one of the greatest classes she’d seen in a while. Maverick was very critical of the fact that no one was able to finish the mission on time, which also slightly concerned Y/n, but she saw all of their strengths and had a whole lot of faith in them.
She continued to walk, her gaze distracted by the runway. Then, she felt a slightly taller figure bump into her, shaking her out of her daydream.
“I’m so sorry,” the voice said. She looked up to see the very same aviator she had been crushing on and suppressing her feelings for. Shit.
“No, it was really my fault, I was hoping to catch you guys in the air,” she said, trying to sound as confident and cool as possible. He seemed very nervous and it made her smile internally, knowing she had this effect on him after a quick run in was definitely an ego boost.
“I really need to be heading out, gotta go pick my lunch up,” she said with a smile, attempting to free herself of this conversation as soon as she could. She walked past him and didn’t turn back. She didn’t notice that he turned around to watch her walk away with a small smile on his face. His cheeks were turning red at the interaction, and for now, it was more than he could have asked for.
Once she had made it to the Hard Deck, it was pretty full. People were laughing and having lunch and the ambience put a big smile on her face.
“Hey Penny! Do you know if my things are ready?” She asked.
“They should be, the cooks held out until the last minute to make them so they’d be as hot as possible for you,” Penny said with a smile.
“Perfect! Thanks so much,” said Y/n, starting to make her way to the kitchen.
“Oh, wait! There was a guy looking for you last night. He was here with the rest of the pilots the other night. I just told him you weren’t working that night so unless you tell him you only work weekends then he might come back tonight,” Penny said.
Deep down, Y/n knew who it was. But she desperately wanted to believe that Penny was mistaken. She hoped that maybe Penny had confused him for someone else, that this mysterious pilot wasn’t as into her as she was into him. She sighed, a little worried and then retrieved her food, driving back to the office. Walking up the stairs to get to her favorite place in the office, she bumped into Maverick.
“Captain! Care to join us for team building in a couple hours?” He asked with a smile.
“Depends on what kind of team building you’re talking about, Captain Mitchell,” she answered.
“Let’s just say it’s a little unconventional for a naval training exercise, but I think you’ll enjoy it. Meet us at the beach at 4:30,” he said with a smirk, leaving her to continue making her way to the rooftop terrace to eat.
The terrace was lonely, but the planes that flew overhead kept her enough company. She contemplated her options and ultimately decided to head down to the beach and have some fun. She wasn’t going to make it exactly at 4:30, she planned taking off a bit early and going back home to change and get to the beach at 4:45.
Once it was 4:30, she drove home. She was both excited to see the pilot she was crushing on and nervous to face him. She kept telling herself to not fall in love, trying hard to convince herself that it was nothing more than just thinking he was hot. There was nothing wrong with that, right? I mean, she thought many people were hot, so why not just one more?
She put on a floral pattern bikini, pulling a short white sundress over it as a cover up. She grabbed a beach bag and put a towel in it along with sunscreen and a couple other things that she deemed necessary. After filling up a water bottle, she walked out of her house, crossed the street, and made it to the beach. She could see a group of people talking about 20 feet away, so she walked until reaching them, seeing the faces take shape. By the way they were breathing heavily and sweating, she assumed that they had been here for a good amount of time before she was here. Probably even before the 4:30 mark. The first one she saw clearly was Maverick, who was waving at her and breaking away from the group to greet her.
“Y/n! I’m so glad you made it, I thought you had decided otherwise when you weren’t here at 4:30,” he said.
“Yea, well believe it or not, there are other things I need to do other than be here, hence me showing up 15 minutes late,” she said with a laugh. The two walked back toward the group and the pilots greeted Y/n, addressing her as captain because they didn’t know any better. To be honest, neither did she. Even though she had gone into the inactive reserve, she had also taken a position within the navy and she wasn’t sure whether she kept her rank or not. But it didn’t bother her at all when the lieutenants addressed her with her rank.
Bob kept seeing Maverick and Y/n together. They were in the classroom having coffee the day before, he talked to her and they were laughing before the pilots went up into the air, he had seen him talking to her that night at the Hard Deck, and they were approaching them together right now. He got worried because he knew they knew each other all the way back to when Y/n was still a student. Even though he felt he had no chance with her anyway, this whole Maverick thing was the final nail in the coffin. He thought they could be together and it would obviously be wrong for him to make a move on her.
The pilots began to play football, a very amusing pastime for Y/n. She was laughing from a chair set up in the sand, her eyes on the ball the whole time. Well, almost the whole time. The truth was that she kept staring at that aviator that she couldn’t quite get off her mind. Even with about 12 shirtless people in front of her, her eyes were still drawn to him. She laughed and cheered for him even though she didn’t know his name. She knew that his call sign was Bob, which she had to admit was a little strange considering the fact that everyone always wants the cool ones. He looked back at her and smiled, nearly running into another one of the pilots because he was distracted.
Maverick came to sit in the chair next to hers when suddenly, the sun was blocked by a certain Vice admiral who wanted to know what the hell the pilots were doing at the beach when they had less than three weeks to the mission.
“Captain Maverick, what the hell are they doing?” He asked. The Vice admiral was trying his hardest to keep his cool, but Y/n could tell he was furious. Even though she had nothing to do with this, she felt the effects of Beau Simpson’s fury.
“Dogfight football, Vice admiral. It’s offense and defense at the same time,” he answered with a smile.
“Well, who’s winning?” He asked.
“I believe they stopped keeping score a long time ago,” Maverick replied, pushing his aviators up his nose and looking at them.
“And the purpose of this is?” Questioned Beau, starting to understand Mav’s vision and looking at the aviators.
“You needed a team? Well, there’s you’re team,” answered Pete.
Y/n couldn’t help but smile at the way Pete could get himself out of pretty much everything. The vice admiral knew there was no way to talk him out of this, so he just walked away and let them be.
The game restarted and Y/n went back to cheering for her pilot. By now she had pulled her sundress off, only in her bikini and a pair of sunglasses. She was laughing and smiling at all of them, but especially at Bob.
Somewhere along the way, she was dragged into the game by Maverick. She felt a little bit intimidated, but once she got into it, she was a star. Though the physical fighting wasn’t her forte, she was great at sneaking past people and aiming. She was able to run past Hangman and snatch the ball from him multiple times which was very rewarding considering how cocky he could be.
They were all laughing and everything was going amazing for her until she bumped into someone slightly taller than her and they were both on the ground in a matter of seconds. The ball, however, crossed the threshold and Y/n technically did score a point, earning a loud cheer.
“I am so so sorry,” she said, not yet noticing who was on the ground with her.
She had landed right on top of him, rolling to the side to make the situation a little less awkward. All that went out the window, though, because she looked at who was next to her.
“Oh, uh, no need to be! It’s okay, really. I’m sorry, Captain Y/l/n,” he replied, turning red and shooting her a shy smile. Something told her that the red rising on his cheeks had nothing to do with the heat.
“Oh, please, call me Y/n, she said, getting up and extending her hand to him.
“I’m Robert, by the way, Robert Floyd,” he said, taking her hand.
“And your call sign is Bob?” she asked with a giggle.
“Uh, yea,” he said, scratching the back of his neck.
“Don’t get me wrong, I like it. It’s just a bit unusual, and I happen to like unusual,” she said, sensing his slight embarrassment. The rest of the aviators had gone for a water break, walking towards a cooler Maverick had been kind enough to prepare. This left both Bob and Y/n standing alone in the sand, with the ocean at their feet.
Bob couldn’t help but admire her figure, she was perfect. The fact that her hair was damp with ocean water and that her body was covered in a mix of water and sweat didn’t help, she just looked impossibly good. Her hair was falling out of the ponytail she had put it up in, framing her face. Truthfully, all he wanted to do was kiss her right then and there. But they barely knew each other, and she had only learned his name a mere minutes ago. Add to that the fact that he was still unsure whether she and Maverick were together.
She wanted to kiss him, too. But it scared her. Once she kissed him, she wouldn’t be able to go back. She contemplated him, his beautiful face, the hair he’d worked so hard to maintain pristine now messed up. But he couldn’t look more perfect. She was biting her lip looking into the horizon, trying to not stare at him and make it obvious that she liked him. This only gave him a better chance of looking at her shamelessly. It was like one of those movies where you’re screaming at the television, screaming at the characters to kiss each other. But they’re oblivious as to how much they like each other and shy away from it.
“So, Cap- Y/n,” he began, correcting himself, “you work at the Hard Deck and Top Gun, huh?”
“Yea, Penny’s kinda like my aunt and I never seemed to be able to distance myself from the navy, even now when I’m in the inactive reserve. I just love everything to do with it, so I decided to work as a flight analyst and strategist instead of being up in the air all the time. I work weekends at the Hard Deck to help Penny out and because I just love it,” she said with a smile.
“That explains it,” muttered Bob under his breath, realizing that the reason he hadn’t seen her at the Hard Deck was that it wasn’t on the weekend..
“What was that?” asked Y/n.
“Oh, nothing, don’t worry about it,” said Bob. He was working up the courage to ask her on a date, but he felt very unsure. She seemed like such a confident person, like someone who knew what she wanted, and he honestly hoped the she would just make the first move.
“Tell me about yourself, Bob,” she said, hoping to get a feel for how he really was. He seemed like a really nice person, but she wasn’t willing to let her guard down after her experiences with pilots. She knew that it was unfair to put them all in the same box of being arrogant and eventually being bad people, but it was what seemed to work for her.
They made their way back to where the rest of the pilots were, grabbing sodas of their own while Maverick ran back to where Penny was and talked to her. Then, the group played for another 45 minutes and admired the sundown together.
“Never gets old, huh?” Said Y/n with a satisfied sign.
“It really doesn’t,” answered Bob from beside her, looking at her with a smile. She smiled back, turning around promptly after to head back to her house. Her figure was fading and getting farther away. She waved from afar and yelled her goodbyes while Bob watched hopelessly as she walked away from him. He waved back and sighed in defeat, regretting not having asked her out. In that moment, he decided he would be at the Hard Deck every weekend to talk to her.
Over the next few weeks, she saw him walking through the doors of the Hard Deck at 6:30 sharp, usually staying for hours leaning over the bar whenever she was attending there and sitting at the tables she frequented the most. Y/n was always the first one to take his orders and help him out so she had an excuse to talk to him. Honestly, she was still unsure as to how this would turn out for her, but she decided to take a chance on him. It had been a long time since she’d dated a pilot or even thought about a relationship with one, so maybe things had changed. She really had warmed up to him, he showed up every Saturday and Sunday night and they had really gotten to know each other through those encounters. Plus, they saw each other a lot at the Top Gun offices and whenever she showed up as Maverick’s special guest to go over the strategies with the students.
“Good evening, Lieutenant Floyd,” said Y/n as her favorite customer sat at the bar.
“Good evening, Captain Y/l/n,” he replied with a smile.
“Sunday night, before a mission, and you’re still here,” she said, amused at his dedication.
“What can I say? I wanted to come see my favorite waitress slash ex-aviator before I left,” he said, looking into her eyes with a gaze that she could barely resist.
She had quickly learned his favorite drink, so she prepared it for him, putting it right near his hand, fingers brushing with his. It kicked her heart rate up a little bit, and she smiled to herself.
“To getting picked for the mission and making it out alive,” he said, raising his glass while still looking at her.
She sighed, remembering the other reason she was so reluctant to date pilots. There was an obvious danger that came with the profession, and it did make her nervous to commit to something that she could lose so easily. With a smile she nodded and went back to attending the other people at the Hard Deck. Over the course of the three weeks Bob had been coming to visit her, she had also gotten a taste for his clothing style. At first, it was the predictable outfits like polos and light colored pants, or colorful button ups, but tonight he was wearing something that was definitely out of the ordinary. His black leather jacket was hanging over the back of the chair and a couple buttons of his white shirt were undone. The change was definitely not unwelcome, in fact, Y/n could barely keep her eyes off him.
It was starting to get late, and though Bob would usually stay until much later, tonight was different. He had to be awake very early the next day to be transported to the carrier and whatnot, so he was getting ready to go.
“Well, Y/n, I better get going. Don’t wanna be too tired tomorrow morning,” he said. Deep down, he didn’t want to leave, he wanted to stay forever in the Hard Deck, even when everyone was gone and the sun rose over the horizon one more time. He would have given anything to stay with her, to have the world progress around them and leave the two frozen in time together.
“Ok, Bob. Hey! Good luck,” she said, grabbing his hand without giving it too much thought. They smiled at each other and things were just right for a moment, eyes conveying the words neither of them could say.
He was walking out of the bar, and life was going in slow motion. She wanted to run to him and confess that she liked him. She wanted to tell hime everything and go with him wherever he was.
She was thinking hard.
I shouldn’t. Should I? Maybe it isn’t such a bad idea. Maybe I should.
He was already outside, on the sidewalk. Her mind suddenly cleared.
I have to do this.
She ran out of the Hard Deck and Bob was walking away like a ghost into the night.
“Bob!” She yelled. He turned around, a little bit confused, but his expression quickly changed when he saw who it was. This was it, she was making her move. And he was not about to let this moment go to waste. They met each other halfway, right by the side of the building. The moon was high in the sky and the waves were crashing on the sand behind them.
“I need to do this, for myself, for the sake of living with no regrets,” she said, steadying herself and taking a deep breath.
She looked up at him and leaned in for the kiss she had been wanting ever since the first night she saw him. He was shocked for a second, he couldn’t believe his luck! And then, he kissed her back, putting his hand on her face and his other arm around her waist.
They eventually separated, gasping for air and laughing a little. Their foreheads were leaning against one another.
“You have no idea how much I wanted to do that,” he whispered into the night. She smiled and pecked his lips one more time.
“That, my dear lieutenant, was for good luck,” she answered with a smile.
“Now you really oughta get going,” she said, trying to get away from him before she said anything she could potentially regret.
“If you say so, captain. I’m going to miss you,” he answered, pulling away from her.
While his fading figure walked away, she stared and only hoped he would come back to her in a couple weeks.
“I’m going to miss you too,” she said. But only the night heard her, as it consumed her whisper and wisps of wind whisked it away to a place she would never know.

The bar was quiet and alone. Lunchtime had just passed and the Hard Deck always closed for a couple hours before opening at 5:30 sharp for the night. Penny was out with Amelia trying to fix something or another on their boat, and y/n found herself humming her favorite song while wiping down tables and putting chairs in their place. Penny had profusely apologized for having to leave her alone for an hour, but the truth was that Y/n loved both Penny and Amelia as her own family, so she really didn’t mind.
After serving 12 years in the navy, she had decided to go into the inactive reserve. She worked at the Top Gun offices as a flight analyst and strategist during the week, as she still adored everything about strategizing in the most efficient ways possible. Weekends, she went to the Hard Deck to work the nights after visiting Top Gun and dropping off treats for everyone in the morning. There was no real reason she needed to be there in the mornings, but she just really loved her co-workers and all the people at Top Gun, so it was something that all of them looked forward to on Saturday mornings.
Her earbuds were in and she danced around the bar, strands of her hair falling out from the low bun she had gathered it into so she could get things done without it in her face. She went into the kitchen, making sure everything was in order for when the cooks came in. It wasn’t necessarily her responsibility, but she always liked to help out the people and places she really cared about.
A tap tap at the glass paned door that led to the terrace prompted her to open it for Penny. Whenever she was alone in the bar, Penny adamantly urged her to keep the doors locked so she would feel safe being in there alone. It was a precaution that both of them agreed on, but the security personnel also happened to be amazingly comforting to her, so she never exactly felt unsafe anyway.
Because she was a flight analyst, she had been working with Vice Admiral Simpson the past few weeks to come up with ways to fly a mission that she had been told was highly classified. Because of that, she didn’t really know what was up with it, and she didn’t know that a few familiar faces would be turning up later that evening.
“Hey Penny! How’s the boat?” Y/n asked.
“We were able to get it up and running with a little help from the mechanics,” replied Penny, walking into the Hard Deck and taking off her sunglasses with one hand. The other was letting down her hair which had been in a ponytail, considering the heat of the day. The way the bar seemed alive even with only three people in it never ceased to amaze Y/n, it seemed magical, and that’s why she kept coming back to California, specifically here. It all seemed laced with magic, a normal naval town with a little bit of glitter dusted around every corner.
“Need help with that?” asked Y/n, seeing Amelia sitting down at a table with a physics textbook.
“Yes, actually. We have a test next week and this stuff is just going in one ear and out the other,” replied Amelia with a smile.
“Penny, I finished cleaning the floors and dusting the stuff on the walls. Also, I pulled out the stepladder to do a bit of dusting for the things on the ceiling and pushed in all the chairs. Aaand I went into the kitchen to make sure everything was in order for when the kitchen staff came in,” said Y/n, making sure Penny heard the things she’d done so she had a justifiable excuse to help Amelia for a while.
“You know I only asked you to sweep and make sure the chairs were tucked in, right?” Penny asked with a smile.
“I know, I know. Just couldn’t help myself,” replied Y/n.
“You, Y/n y/l/n, are an angel,” said Penny, giving Y/n a hug before going back to her bar and leaving Amelia with her.
“So you have a test on aerodynamics next week?,” asked Y/n, glancing at the open textbook that sat in front of the girl. Amelia nodded, a little worried.
“You came to the perfect person for help! This will be a piece of cake once you see it like this…” began Y/n.
After about 45 minutes, Amelia understood. She still needed some practice, but she was doing much better than the day before when she could barely understand the words coming out of her teacher’s mouth.
“Thank you, Y/n. You don’t know how much that helped!” said Amelia, throwing her arms around Y/n’s neck.
“Any time, honey!” said Y/n with a laugh. There was only about half an hour left until opening time, so Amelia needed to be taken to her friends house.
“I’ll drive her, Penny,” said Y/n, seeing how the other employees were coming back and Penny clearly had a lot on her plate to organize.
“Thank you,” Penny mouthed to Y/n, after giving a goodbye hug and a kiss to her daughter.
“Come on, Ames,” said Y/n, opening the front door of the Hard Deck.
Hopping into Y/n’s car, Amelia practically begged to put the top down.
“Please, Y/n/n! It’s the weekend! And it’s so fun when the top is down,” said the girl.
“Can’t say no, top down it is!” exclaimed Y/n with a smile.
The might not have physically looked like sisters, but they sure acted like them. They were singing in sync, smiling as the sun was setting and the wind was blowing in their hair. It was scene pulled straight out of a movie and neither of them could have asked for a better 15 minutes.
Somewhere not too far away in a small apartment, Robert Floyd was getting ready to head to the Hard Deck. He had just gotten out of the shower, wiping off the fogged up mirror in his bathroom while securing a white towel around his waist. He grabbed his glasses and put them on, finding his attempts to push them higher up the bridge of his nose unsuccessful because his face was still damp and the bathroom was very humid. He opened the door that connected the bathroom to the bedroom to try and get the steam out of the bathroom, even opening the window above the shower to get some air flow. A thin layer of sweat was beginning to form on his body, making him feel slightly frustrated because he had to be out the door in 20 minutes max if he wanted to make a good impression on his flight mates and be there early.
After pulling on his khaki uniform and fixing his name tag, he combed his hair to perfection and gelled it back so it would stay in place all night. He sprayed on his cologne and brushed his teeth, making sure to look as put together as possible for tonight.
Y/n pulled into the side parking lot where all the employee spots were, backing her car into one of them. She opened the door that led into the kitchen and made her way into the Hard Deck.
“Evening, everyone!” She exclaimed, waving and all the cooks.
She was in a little bit of a hurry because Penny probably needed an extra pair of hands to get everything in order.
“How was the car ride?” Penny asked.
“It was great, Amelia is seriously the best,” laughed Y/n.
“You need any help?” she asked.
“Um, I would love for you to help me by just relaxing for a sec. You’ve been helping out all afternoon and it’s gonna be busy tonight, so I’d rather have you rest for a couple minutes and just relax before the show begins,” Penny said, patting her on the back and sitting her down at the bar.
Y/n knew there was no point in arguing, so she sat down and said hi to everyone who passed by.
The bar began to fill up with people, familiar faces greeted the staff and new ones walked in with looks of fascination. The Hard Deck always had that effect on people, one of wonder and a certain belief in its magic.
Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell was definitely not one of the people Y/n expected to see. They had seen each other over the years at naval events and had worked on some projects together, but she certainly didn’t think he’d be back here. Especially not after that one time he came to teach her Top Gun class and was fired, like, the next day.
“Captain Mitchell! Long time no see! What brings you down here?” she asked him.
“Very nice to see you, y/cs! I’m down here because I really messed up this time. You’ll find out soon enough,” replied Pete with a long sigh and a tired but sincere smile.
She was far too busy to continue talking to him, taking orders from her designated area of the bar, so she waved at him and went back to work. She and the rest of the servers had a good system going in which a group of two or three servers each took on a different sector of the bar. It worked out great for them because it wasn’t as overwhelming as having to walk around the entire place taking orders.
All her questions about Pete’s strange comment were answered when she saw a guy in a khaki uniform walk into the Hard Deck. She couldn’t help but follow him with her eyes. He was very handsome and she couldn’t deny it: that neat hair was begging to be messed with and those gold frame glasses just needed to get lost in a pile of clothes beside a bed. Preferably hers.
She hadn’t really registered he was a pilot until she snapped out of her daydream and noticed her bottom lip was between her teeth. She had a strict rule against getting with aviators, ever. After years of dealing with them and their douchebag attitudes, she’d learned to not make that mistake again.
Her first serious boyfriend was a boy she met in the naval academy. She was actually in love with him, but he shattered her heart for the first time by completely ghosting her after months of dating. Then, another pilot had cheated on her, and so on. Pilots loved the thrills in life and thought they were the smartest people on earth, but none of them knew how to handle something as fragile as a heart. She thought it was ironic and even a little funny, because they were able to flawlessly fly those jets, operate such majestic beasts with scary precision and yet they didn’t know what to do with a person who’d placed their soul in their hands. But she was over them and knew she couldn’t make that mistake again.
As the evening progressed, she continued to see other aviators pour in through the doors of the Hard Deck. None had pulled her eyes the way that the very first one did, and even though she kept minding her own business, she honestly couldn’t get him out of her head.
All the sudden, she heard Penny’s voice call out for her.
“Y/n, will you help me out here? I need to go check something in the kitchen and I can’t leave the bar here alone,” she explained.
“Of course I will! Take your time,” she answered.
Slipping in behind the bar, she pressed down her black skirt flush against her thighs, sighing and taking the orders of people around her. One man who frequented the bar and was very nice asked for his regular, asking Y/n how she was doing.
Then, a not so familiar face popped up behind her. He waited patiently to be served, and Y/n turned around to meet the gaze of the aviator she’d had her eyes on ever since he walked in. She practically sank into his deep blue eyes, trying not to seem like she was falling deeply into them. The smell of a fresh but not overpowering cologne spilled over the bar and pulled her senses into him even more. She was already drowning in him and he hadn’t even said a word.
“Hi! Can I have a… a beer please?” he asked. She could tell he was nervous, and obviously he wasn’t very good at hiding it, hands fidgeting and looking for something to occupy themselves with.
“Of course,” replied Y/n. She could see he was about to set his phone down on the bar. She debated whether she should warn him and decided she should so as to save him an embarrassing first impression on the rest of the pilots. But mainly, it was because she really did like him and she really didn’t want to see his pretty face riddled with shame.
“Careful! Penny wouldn’t let that slide and I certainly will not either,” she said, pointing at the wooden sign.
“Oh, thanks! That would have been terribly embarrassing,” he said with the most gorgeous smile Y/n had seen. It was taking her every muscle to hold back, she wanted so badly to kiss him right then and there. But the battle scars she had from boys like him, who started out sweet and then turned bitter were already one too many. So she turned around and poured a beer from the tap before she had time to change her mind.
“Here’s your beer, lieutenant,” she said, returning the smile and noticing a pink color rising on the man’s cheeks. Pulling rank on these pilots that were all at least a little bit full of themselves always worked, even if they were barely just lieutenants still.
A quick thank you and he was gone. Penny was back and Y/n decided she needed a second outside, alone. She noticed the stark contrast between the noisy inside and the quiet outdoors. She could hear the muffled sound of people talking, the laughter and the music. She didn’t, however, notice a certain aviator’s eyes following her as she walked outside. If anything, this was just a fun way to pass the time while the aviators were in town. But nothing more… or that’s what she hoped, anyway. She couldn’t make any promises about not breaking the rules for this pilot.
hey guys! im going to split my bob fic into 2 or 3 parts because I really wanna take my time with it and im liking how it's turning out a lot :) the first part is done, im just going to proofread and see if I make some edits and im pretty far into the second part, so the first one will probably come out tonight hehehe im excited
I think your work is great and I have an idea for Iceman. Y/N is Maverick's sister and won Top Gun a year earlier. She is now supposed to be teaching her brother's class, where she falls in love with Iceman. As the two get closer, she overhears one of Iceman's friends saying that he can get one over on Maverick with what's going on between him and her, Iceman just laughs. She distances herself from him and grows colder towards him during class. When he asks her what happened, she says what she heard and he tries to straighten it out. But she has to go on an important mission where she almost dies.... I have no idea if that's too much or too little at the end, but if you should write it could you do it with a happy ending with smut or without it doesn't matter...?
hiiii! im so sorry I hadn't answered your ask yet, I did read it and I would love to write this :) im super excited to write this for you and im so glad you like my work <3
ok I know that I said I was going to write another rooster fic but I really wanna write for bob because I got an ask for him and I seriously wanna write for him. im simultaneously going to work on an iceman ask because I really wanna expand the characters I write for. if any of you have any ideas for rooster, please do send them in through my asks! they seriously are always open :))
When the legendary Y/n "Raven" Y/l/n comes back to co-teach with Pete Maverick Mitchell, a certain aviator catches her eye at the Hard Deck the night before their first day of class. Phoenix is head over heels for Y/n, not knowing she'd be her teacher. Maybe kissing the instructor isn't so bad after all :)
a/n: hey guys!!!! I really hope you love this a lot, I really really enjoyed writing it and I literally cannot wait to write my next nat x fem reader fic hehehehe. anyways, this is dedicated to @cfvgbhndun since they sent in the ask. thank you so much! I hope you enjoy!!

Opening the door to the Hard Deck, y/n felt all the memories hit her in the face. The flurry of memories was both a cool ocean breeze and a huge tidal wave that swallowed her whole. The smell of alcohol, cigarette smoke, and a little bit of sweat wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but it smelled like home. It smelled like the memories she’d made with her Top Gun classmates, her family.
Y/n walked in like she owned the place, she was taking off her aviators that were tangled in her hair, jacket falling off her shoulder a little. Some people recognized her, technicians and staff at the Top Gun who patted her on the back and smiled at her. She had retired from her position as Vice Admiral after an unfortunate accident on the carrier ship that had massively scarred her both emotionally and physically. Though she’d seen people die in combat, nothing would ever compare to the horrors she witnessed on that carrier. She retired from being in the skies as a highly decorated pilot, but more importantly as an absolute legend.
Walking toward the bar, she turned her head to the wall Penny had set up to commemorate the Top Gun classes and walked closer to it. She spotter her class a few pictures back from the last one she’d hung and it made her feel like it had been so long ago. She remembered each and every one of her classmates, from the quietest ones all the way to the ones who got on her nerves. Her eyes moved to the pictures next to hers, recognizing a few notable aviators. Then, she went all the way back to the pictures of the 80s and she scanned for the one where her co-teacher appeared. The legendary Maverick Mitchell was right there, but next to him was Goose Bradshaw. She knew about his son: he was supposed to go into the naval academy with her but she never really knew why he never made it.
As her eyes were returning to Maverick in the picture, Penny’s infamous bell rang out and the bar erupted in a deafening cheer. She smiled and turned around to the bar to see who all the commotion was for, spotting Pete in the flesh. They had met before, once or twice at naval events, and they’d flown together a couple times. To her, Mitchell was still a mystery, a legend, and someone who was quite similar to her. As three guys carried him out, she ran towards them and patted Maverick on the shoulder.
“Nice to see you, Pete!” she nearly yelled over all the commotion. He saluted her with a defeated smile as the men tossed him out of the bar and into the sand. She recognized the three men as some of the students they’d be teaching the next day and she couldn’t wait to see their reaction when they realized that they had literally thrown one of their teachers into the sand the evening before.
“Y/n!” exclaimed Penny from behind the bar.
“Long time no see, Penny,” replied Y/n, settling herself on a barstool and shoving her phone into her pocket. She knew the rules by now and she was not going to be the second person that night to get thrown out that evening, and certainly not the second teacher.
“How’ve you been, Raven?” asked Penny.
“Oh, you know, getting by. I really thought I was grounded for good. But I really couldn’t say no to coming back here, especially not when they told me I’d be co-teaching with Pete Mitchell. We both know I love a challenge, eh? How about you and Amelia?” replied y/n.
“Always here. Amelia’s doing great, she loves to sail and she likes to help around here before everyone comes in for the night,” said Penny.
“She must be so grown up by now! Time really does fly. Does she still play piano?” asked y/n.
“I mean, she likes to practice here in the mornings, but it’s really just for fun. I bet you still play piano though,” Penny winked, unplugging the jukebox. The sudden absence of music did not go unnoticed even with all the loud conversation and laughter.
“Damn, Penny, I haven’t even been here 20 minutes!” said Y/n laughing. She had no choice but to make her way towards the piano.
Over by the pool tables, a certain group of aviators watched her walking. They observed the way her hips swayed and the way her hair fell on her shoulders so effortlessly.
“Dude, who’s that chick?” asked a smirking Hangman. Coyote laughed with his friend, echoing his sentiment.
Phoenix couldn’t keep her eyes off of y/n, curiosity sparking in her. She had no idea who she was but something about her completely had her attention and drew her in. She almost didn’t notice her legs moving her toward the woman, interested in where she was heading.
Y/n sat at the bench in front of the piano cracking her knuckles for comedic effect, eliciting a few laughs from those who knew her and those who didn’t alike.
“It’s been a while,” she said, playing the keys on the piano to warm up and feel it again. She had a piano in her house, but she really hadn’t played the Hard Deck’s piano in a long time.
As her hands began to fly across the keyboard, she was back and better than ever.
“Listen, baby, ain’t no mountain high,” she started.
Her singing voice was booming, rich and smooth. It filled the entire bar, every crack and crevice just as much as it filled Penny’s and other people’s head with memories of what the Hard Deck used to be.
Phoenix was entranced, mesmerized by the woman sitting a few feet away from her. She was part of the group of people who had never heard Y/n sing or even seen her, but that were already charmed. Suddenly, she looked at Bradley, who was standing next to her.
“Hey Rooster, isn’t this a Bradshaw thing? The whole ‘I will burst into song if I see a piano nearby’?” she asked.
“I mean, it was. I guess someone took my place here while I was gone,” he replied.
“Actually,” Penny chimed in, “she filled the gap between you and your dad. He was here back in the 80s, and she came here in the late 90s. The greatest of her generation in every way,” she smiled.
“So she was top of her class?” Phoenix asked.
“She graduated as the best aviator out of all her Top Gun classmates. I’d say she was the best pilot the navy saw that entire decade, she was just like Maverick,” Penny answered.
Rooster was just starting to put the pieces together. Famous aviator from the 90s, best of the best, kind of like Maverick. He’d heard of the call sign Raven and began to understand who she could be. He was terribly impressed and somewhat starstruck, but he was also beginning to question why she was back there. Phoenix was even more in awe after learning this fact while hearing her voice fill the entire place.
“‘Cause, baby, there ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t no valley low enough, ain’t no river wide enough to keep me from getting to you baby”, she sang, the entire bar singing along with her. Even Maverick was enjoying himself through the window.
Phoenix was standing close enough to the piano to admire her face but not close enough to reach it. With her beer in hand, she cheered her on and sang along with her. She was struggling to not sit next to her and put her arm around the woman’s waist, but she thought of it as nothing more than a bad case of infatuation. She knew nothing about her, only that she was also an aviator, that she was talented as hell, and that she was the most gorgeous being she’d ever laid her eyes on.
Rooster seemed to notice this, leaning down to whisper in Phoenix’s ear.
“Seems like you’ve got a horrible case of heart eyes, Nat,” he said, laughing a little.
She was so fixated on Y/n that she barely registered Rooster’s comment and clapped furiously once the woman wrapped up her song. People clapped from every corner of the bar and she was by far the loudest cheerer. Y/n bowed and smiled at everyone, her gaze lingering on Phoenix for a second longer than it had on everyone else’s.
“Did you see that? Did you, Bradley? Please tell me it wasn’t just me,” she told Rooster.
“It wasn’t you, Phoenix. I saw that too,” he replied, smiling at Natasha.
A couple hours and many drinks after, Y/n decided it was time to head home. She knew the aviators she’d be teaching were at the Hard Deck the whole time she was there, but she didn’t necessarily think it was the best idea to introduce herself to them in this state. She said goodbye to Penny and walked home. She purposely didn’t drive to the bar because the apartment she was renting wasn’t too far and because she knew she’d be drunk and definitely wouldn’t be able to drive.
Natasha was following Y/n with her eyes through the window.
“Earth to Phoenix!! Anyone home?” asked Rooster.
Phoenix was pretty drunk. In fact, she considered herself a responsible drinker. Tonight, however, she kept asking Penny for one more shot of courage and then she’d go talk to Y/n. Penny gave into it because she knew Phoenix wasn’t actually going to do anything and would only admire y/n from afar. But now it was almost midnight and she was near hammered.
“Yeah? I’m here. Where’s the hot lady?” she asked, words slurring.
“She just left, hun,” laughed Penny.
In her drunken state, she felt a very deep sadness.
“Can I go with her, please?” she asked Rooster. He laughed a little bit and she frowned.
“Come on, let’s get you home,” he said, walking her out of the bar.
Y/n had made it home, slotting her keys into the lock and opening the door quietly. Even drunk, she knew it was late and that the people on her floor were asleep and she didn’t want to make much noise so as to not interrupt their rest. In a way, she was envious of them. They were blissfully asleep and wouldn’t wake up with a massive headache tomorrow. But most of all, they weren’t returning to a place that held so many bittersweet memories.
Sighing, she hung her purse on the coat rack by the door and taking off her heeled boots. She shimmied out of her jacket, hanging it on the rack as well. Walking into her room, she opened her closet and looked for pajamas. Summers in California were infamously hot, and even though the AC was humming quietly, she needed shorts and a tank top to sleep in. She changed and then walked out into the kitchen to get some water in an attempt to sober up at least a little bit before going to bed and diminishing the hangover she knew she’d have the next morning.
Phoenix was in the passenger seat of Rooster’s Bronco, swaying to the love song that played through the car speakers.
“Kiss me, beneath the milky twilightttttt,” she sang. Out of the corner of his eye, Rooster could see her smiling and he giggled at how charmed she was by this woman they’d seen at the bar only from afar. He knew that Natasha was dedicating this song to that pilot from the bar, and he could only hope that they would see her again. Partly because he was really rooting for Phoenix and partly because he wanted to see her beauty one more time. He walked her into her apartment and made sure she was ok before heading out to his own.
Y/n’s eyes shot open as her alarm blared on her nightstand. She had a headache, but it was nowhere near as bad as she thought it would be. The sun was barely peeking over the horizon but it still lit up her room enough for her to squint and get up to open the sliding glass door that led to the balcony. The morning greeted her with a nice breeze but the sun warmed her enough to stay out there a couple minutes. This had always been her favorite part of the day when she was here for Top Gun, seeing the sun rise and knowing that she’d be up in the air all day.
She drank her morning coffee and ate breakfast, then heading into the bathroom for a shower, and finally got dressed for the day. A short sleeved white shirt and a black leather skirt would do for the first portion of the day when she had to teach. She was going to wear her military jacket over it, just to remind the aviators who they were dealing with. Truthfully, she wasn’t expecting them to know her so she really just wanted them to see the badges and understand that she was a very respectable pilot. She made her way out of the apartment, tossing her duffel bag (which contained her flight suit and other important things) in the passenger seat.
Driving to the base, she had the top of her vintage Mercedes down and her aviator sunglasses on. She would be lying if she said she didn’t feel like the coolest person on Earth, and she felt like she was 23 again.
She pulled into the staff parking lot and into the spot they had reserved for her, turning the radio down and seeing Maverick come in right after her.
“Hey, Raven!” he said, smiling and getting off his infamous motorcycle.
“Hi, Maverick. Real pleasure to see you,” she replied, giving him a hug.
“Sweet ride, y/l/n. How’ve you been?” he asked, making small talk with his co-teacher.
“Thanks, this baby cost me a fortune, but it’s worth every penny. And I’ve been alright. You know I’m still involved with the navy, just here on the ground. I’m surprised to see you back here, actually,” she replied.
“Ah, you see, this is more of a punishment. But the fact that I get to teach with you makes it a little better. Reminds me of the old days,” he said.
They walked into the Vice admiral’s office to talk to him before meeting the aviators. After the quick meeting, they entered the hangar where the pilots were. They walked down the middle of the desks together, looking like the most badass pair of teachers the navy had ever seen. Both of them knew how they looked, and they walked in a way that showed it, matching smirks decorating both their faces.
“Good morning aviators!” Y/n began.
“Welcome to the most rigorous training you’ve had. I am Captain Pete Mitchell, call sign Maverick and I will be one of your instructors over the next couple of weeks,” continued Maverick. His call sign elicited gasps and smiles from the students, Y/n noticing the three guys who had thrown him out of the bar last night wincing. She couldn’t help but smile at them and also at her partner being back here.
“And I am Vice Admiral Y/n Y/l/n, call sign Raven. I will also be your instructor for this mission. Now, to begin…,” said Y/n. The room was quiet and the aviators were shocked. Being taught by Maverick was one thing. But being taught by the Raven was something entirely different. They’d heard the stories of her legendary skills, her maneuvers, and the accident on the plane carrier that finally made her stay on the ground. All of those were just legends, but here she was, in the flesh. And the aviators were starstruck. But one particular aviator was turning red and realizing that her chances of getting with Raven had dropped to zero.
Once the orientations were completed, the pilots walked out into the late morning sun and the teachers headed to the locker rooms to change into their flight suits.
“Ready, Raven? Sure you still got it?” teased Maverick.
“I was born ready, Mitchell,” she replied, and in that moment, Pete Mitchell knew he’d finally met his match and that she had never lost the fire of flying.
The aviators were walking towards their planes, when Hangman began to speak to them.
“I think I’m damn close to beating Maverick, but I know I can beat Raven,” he said.
“Dude, do you even know how amazing she was in the air?” asked Coyote.
“But she’s been grounded for a while, she’s gotta be rusty by now,” he replied.
“What do you wanna bet?” asked Coyote, sensing an opportunity for a wonderful bet. He knew that Hangman would lose, so he really took advantage of it.
“Well, if I do beat her, you owe me 100 bucks,” said Hangman.
“And if you don’t, you have to sing When I Kissed The Teacher by ABBA,” replied Coyote. Both men were so sure they would win that they shook hands on it immediately.
“Good morning, aviators!” said Raven and Maverick in unison.
“Welcome to dogfighting 101,” started Maverick.
“First to be taken down does 100 pushups?” asked Hangman.
“You’re in for it, Lieutenant,” said Raven, shooting up between his and Phoenix’s plane.
Once she was back in the cockpit, it was like she had never left. She flew like never before and exceeded the aviators’ greatest expectations, she was straight out of their wildest dreams and further.
After a couple intense minutes, she had her target locked on Phoenix and Bob’s plane.
“Trace, Floyd, you’re dead,” she said.
Natasha couldn’t even be mad, not when it was Raven who’d shot them down. She observed as Raven masterfully snuck up behind Hangman’s plane and locked him with ease.
“Wow,” sighed Phoenix.
“You’re not drooling over me, are you, Phoenix?” asked Raven. Phoenix nervously stumbled over her words, but Y/n only laughed.
That evening, Y/n was driving back to her apartment to get ready for a night at the Hard Deck with her students and Maverick. It had been her idea to get to know them on the ground because she wanted to get a feel for how they really were as people, not just as aviators.
She looked for something to wear and thought that a black lacy bodysuit and a pair of loose ripped jeans would be alright. She knew that these were her students, but she also knew that the oldest was around her own age, so she didn’t feel like she had to hold back when it came to her clothing choices. She tossed on her leather jacket and put on a pair of simple black heels. She decided to drive to the Hard Deck because she wasn’t going to risk drinking too much tonight and embarrassing herself in front of her students.
She could hear an ABBA song playing from inside, and a certain Hangman singing along to the song. She laughed to herself, wondering what he had done to be stuck in that predicament. Phoenix was arriving at the Hard Deck and Raven turned around when she heard another person walking behind her.
“Hi, Lieutenant Trace,” said Y/n with a smile.
“Hello, Vice Admiral Y/l/n,” replied Phoenix with a nervous grin.
“Beautiful summer night, isn’t it?” asked Raven, looking up at the cloudless sky.
Phoenix almost didn’t hear what she said because she was too busy looking at Raven’s red lips.
“Yea, I missed this kind of thing back from when I was in Top Gun,” said Phoenix with a smile.
The women walked into the bar together, Rooster winking and raising his beer at Phoenix all the way from the pool tables. She rolled her eyes but smiled when she noticed Raven looking at her.
“Wanna go get a drink?” asked Raven.
“Totally!” answered Phoenix.
What entranced Phoenix most about her teacher was the fact that she was always so cool. So suave. She was effortlessly picturesque and beautiful, even when her hair had been tangled by the wind, even when her face was red with markings from her helmet, and especially when she was in the locker room after flying with her suit around her waist and a sports bra on. It drove Phoenix wild, but what she didn’t know was that Raven felt the exact same way, treading carefully in fear that Phoenix would reject her advances. But everything seemed to be going well tonight, so it was a great night for both of them.
They sat at the bar for a few minutes until Raven decided it was time to go spend some time with her other pupils and get to know them. Phoenix lingered at the bar, feeling a little defeated.
“What’s wrong, Nat?” questioned Penny.
“What’s wrong is that I’m in love with my teacher,” replied Phoenix, her head in her hands.
“And she likes you a lot too,” replied Penny.
“I mean, yes, I tried to be a good pilot today and I’m glad that she likes me but she doesn’t like me the way I like her,” said Phoenix.
“No, listen to me, Trace. She like likes you, I promise,” said Penny.
Natasha sat at the bar, processing what she’d heard from Penny with a drink in hand and watching her teacher have fun by the pool tables with the boys.
“What are you waiting for, Nat? Go get her!” said Penny.
Phoenix swallowed the rest of her drink, putting her glass down on the table and getting up with a newfound confidence to go for Raven. She made her way over to the pool table and walked past Hangman to go stand next to Y/n. She had taken her coat off and hung it on a chair, exposing the lace tank she was wearing and making Phoenix both more intimidated and more in love.
“You think you can beat me at pool?” asked Natasha.
“Oh, I know I can beat you at pool,” replied Raven.
“Game on, then. If I win, you buy us all a round of drinks,” said Natasha.
“And if I win, I get to give you a kiss. That is, if you want it,” this, Raven whispered into Natasha’s ear.
“If I win, Hangman has got to sing Kiss Me for all of us, for the little stunt he pulled thinking he could beat me at dogfighting,” said Raven out loud. She wasn’t sure she wanted everyone to know that she might be starting something with her student just yet. But something told her that later on tonight, they would find out.
“Why do I always get brought in to these things?” asked Hangman. But the deal was made and there was no turning back. Though her fellow aviators wanted her to win, Natasha was willing to lose for a kiss from Raven. And it wouldn’t hurt to see Hangman sing again.
“Aaaaand that’s a Raven win!” Exclaimed Maverick. The aviators were defeated because they really did want free drinks, but Hangman was especially upset because he had to sing for the second time that night. He was pretty drunk, so when he stepped up to the microphone, it made the situation all the funnier.
“Hey Penny? Mav and I are gonna buy a round for the students,” said Raven. Penny winked at them and got started on the drinks for them.
Hangman was slurring his words while singing but he seemed sincerely in love. He was teasing Rooster who was directly in front of him and also significantly more sober. He was playing right into it, deciding to have some fun and blowing him kisses every now and again.
“Something tells me neither of them are joking,” said Raven, wrapping her arm around Phoenix’s waist. The bar was still pretty full, but they’d managed to find a spot that was relatively empty and quiet. Both of their hearts were beating rapidly and the butterflies in their stomachs were hard to ignore.
“Come with me, I wanna show you something,” said Y/n, grabbing Nat’s hand and walking toward the terrace which was empty.
“When I was in Top Gun, my wingman was my best friend. You know, you and Bob remind me of us. We were the typical confident-shy pair, and we were good. We were amazing. People started off calling us the Maverick and Goose of our generation, and I used to tell them to stop that. They thought it was because I didn’t want to be compared to anyone, but it was really because I grew paranoid of losing my best friend like Maverick had. He was my brother and I couldn’t even imagine losing him. We used to come out here on noisy nights, when we wanted to clear our heads, it’s a sacred place for me,” said Raven, looking up at the stars. Phoenix, anticipating the next part of the story, held y/n’s hand tighter.
“But then my worst fears came true. Then, the carrier happened and he died. He died in my arms. It was straight out of my nightmares, him taking his last breath as I desperately tried to hold on to the last shred of hope I had that he’d come back. See that bright star over there? We always used to say it was ours, ever since we went to the naval academy together and we were both annoyed by the fact that it was too bright to let us sleep,” she laughed. Phoenix smiled at this woman, the woman that only hours ago she’d thought impenetrable, made out of steel. And she hugged her tight, feeling all the warmth and love she radiated.
“I’m sorry about that, Y/n. I can’t imagine going through that. I’m honored you decided to share this with me,” replied Phoenix with a warm smile.
“Well, now that that parts done, I have a bet to fulfill, haven’t I” Said Raven. Phoenix wanted to nod, but she didn’t know it was the right call, so she just looked into Y/n’s eyes, hoping that she would understand what she meant.
Y/n put one hand on Phoenix’s face, pulling her in with her other arm wrapped around her waist. Phoenix melted into her embrace, wrapping her arms around Raven’s neck, deepening the kiss. It felt eternal, it felt perfect. The moon shined a little brighter and the world stopped spinning for a couple minutes that stretched to the length of a million lifetimes.
When it was over, they sat there in each other’s arms, eyes closed in bliss. Just as they were opening their eyes, they heard Hangman’s voice from inside.
“Kiss me, beneath the milky twilight, lead me out on the moonlit floooooor lift you open hand, strike up the band and make the fireflies dance, silver moon sparkling… so kiss meeeeeee,” he sang. Apparently, it was his third round with the same song. This time, Phoenix kissed Raven one more time. And another time, and one more time after that. Both of them went back inside and Rooster glanced at Phoenix, winking at his friend like he had at the beginning of the night.
Hangman had moved on from Kiss Me back to When I Kissed the Teacher, making Phoenix and Raven laugh at what they’d just done.
“Wanna come back to my place, Phoenix?” asked Y/n.
“Thought you’d never ask,” replied Phoenix, linking arms with Raven as they were leaving the bar.
