dear fans of TDP... please stop

okokokok I understand that there’s a deaf character who’s realy really REALLY cool. I agree that this character is absolutely stunning! I was bouncing off the walls to see a deaf character in this show- all of my sibling and I have tons of deaf and hard of hearing friends.

I understand that this is kind of new, to have a deaf character. I understand that it’s exciting. But please, please stop treating ASL as some sort of accessory that shows your devotion to tdp.

ASL isn’t merch for this show. ASL is a real language.

There IS a deaf culture. Please stop ignoring deaf culture as you scramble to lean ASL just for fangirlish purposes.

ASL isn’t just like english. It’s incredibly different, in fact. In many ways, too.

Is it bad to learn ASL? No! I love love LOVE how so many people are being encouraged to learn this marvelous language! But, learning it just so you can be all like ‘omg i love this show i even learned sign language’ is incredibly rude.

I haven’t seen many fans doing this, but I have seen a few. I’m just hoping I can stop it before it becomes a big problem.
