i'm rewatching the first episode of bridon arc and this whole scene makes me want to scream.

imagine you're cheng xiaoshi. you have abandonment issues due to your parents mysteriously leaving you as a small child. one day you meet a boy, and in his eyes you see the same secrets your parents kept from you. he's kind and good, but he's hiding something, and you're afraid it will take him away from you the same way it took your parents.

and you're cheng xiaoshi, so you can't be upfront and honest about these fears, and you have to mask your vulnerability with jokes. but he doesn't treat it like a joke. he says i won't disappear. he says i can use these powers for you. he says i can't promise forever, but i'll stay here as long as i can.

anyway, they make me ill.

[one of the notes i made while rewatching bridon arc ep4, specifically the scene he has w lx in the car]: there's something to be said about xf’s well ‘that's none of my business’ attitude— to feign ignorance, to put distance between yourself and the truth, is a complicit kind of violence i think.

he compartmentalizes so well (reconciling vein's capacity for violence with a “he treats me kindly”), (taking a job spying on people but drawing the line at being privy to the details, as if the knowledge will implicate him, not the act of doing it), while holding onto his idea of principles and mortality; feels guilty but rationalises it (he HAS to do it, he's only here for the money, he is being exploited—that there are morally dubious, weird people who would hire him to do this speaks to Them, not his character; he has no choice).

its actually so wild to open up my lc fic folder and there's. many unfinished/half written/barely started wips that i feel like i just wiped from my brain. probably even more fragments in my notes app. i really need to go through and read stuff and probably organise/see what's salvageable...

really love a corruption arc where the character is trying way too hard to make it work but they're in over their head and it's uncomfortable and embarrassing and they're swallowing their own puke every time they do something awful and damp with sweat and trembling but insistent that they can do this, they want it, they're not a child, but it's like they're playing dressup in clothes that are too big for them and trying to convince their own reflection in the mirror that they fit and it's just no fun to watch at all

+ then they find inside them a capacity for cruelty far more upsettingly vicious than anyone could have imagined and decide that because they enjoy how unafraid it makes them feel for the first time in as long as they can remember it must have been their true nature all along instead of something that had to be starved in the dark until it grew desperate enough to claw its way out 🙂‍↕️
