âGuess I havenât grown out of my âtoo close for comfortâ phase.â She gives him an awkward smile with a shrug of her left shoulder. But her smile faded as he continued with his sort of explanation of why she hadnât heard he was even back in town. Callumâs dad had always been a bit of a jerk to him and she;d always hated hearing the stories of his misfortunes at home and if there was one person she would choose to take out of this town it would have been Callumâs father. âYouâre not a screw up.â With a sigh she reaches out and subconsciously gives his hand a gentle touch. âYour father is justâŚexcuse my language, but heâs a dick and we all know it.âÂ
At least Callum was being honest with his answer to her. Whenever the question of how she was doing came up the blonde usually shrugged it off and said she was doing fineâŚjust fine. It was the easy way to go, making it so that she didnât have to face her issues head on, and sometimes she even believed it herself. But here he was being blunt and facing the issues he had with humor. It was something she admired about the army vet. It was something she was extremely jealous of as well. âYou know you never have to lie to me.â It was a quiet statement she made as she brought a hand up to rub her armâŚ..quiet and ironic considering she was planning on doing just that with him.
âIâm..Iâm doing okay.â Biting her bottom lip, she looks up at him again. Why she was lying to him she had no idea. If anyone would understand it would be the man standing in front of her. Sighing, she shakes her head softly. âOkay, so thatâs a lie. Iâm basically ignoring all of my problems and hiding away in this store every day so that I donât have to feel the things that Iâve been denying feeling since the funeral. My sister shows up out of the blue with an eight year old kid Iâve never met. And Iâm pretty sure Iâve become a sad, bitter, old woman at the age of twenty-five. So thereâs that.â
Â
There was something that Callum had always loved and respected about Willow. And there had always been a small flame for her barely flickering in the background of his life, but enough to make a difference. Enough to make him genuinely care for the woman, especially when he saw his best friend (and her husband) get blown apart by a bomb some child had been brainwashed to set by the enemy of the US. Not only had Callum lost his brother that day, but he watched a child lose his life, because some coward of a man was too fucking selfish to give up his own life for the cause, and instead, had decided he should remain balls deep in some rando woman fulfilling a virgin fetish he was more than likely harboring, âNever grow out of it. This world is harsh enough as it is, and to lose that would be a tragedy.â He didnât want to tell her how cold the world really was. She had been through enough in her own personal life to need not know what life was really like on the outside of the town they lived it.
Returning a soft smile to her, when he felt her rub his arm, Callum cleared his throat before speaking up once more, âAnd youâre right. My dad is a dick. Heâd make the perfect mayor of Dickville. I might just have to buy him an honorary plaque and key to hang up in his office.â The man knew that word would probably get back to his father via the old gossipy hens still nosing in his and Willowâs business. He remembered their faces from church and knew that they provided the inside scoop to all the congregation when something or someone big stirred up trouble in the town. Willowâs sister had probably been the hot topic of current Sundays, but now that Callum was around, her name would float away into oblivion and former army boy would make it in the local gossip column.
As he continued to side-eye the women, he listened to Willow explain herself. He was glad he was someone she felt comfortable enough to trust. She never needed to lie around him, âIâm grateful you feel comfortable enough to just be honest with me. Never think you have to lie. I may not be one of your girlfriends or your sister, but Iâm here, okay? Iâll give it to you straight, if you can give it to me straight.â Just as she had done previously, he reached out his own hand and gave her shoulder a caring squeeze, âOf course, I canât guarantee this will stay between us, since there are some rather nosy hens pecking around in your flower shop. They must be looking for a grub to choke down.â His voice was much louder than it had been, and it sent the ladies scurrying out the door showing their distaste as they left.
Callum lowered his hand and grinned at successfully removing the problem in a non-violent way, âI think I just might have caused you to lose some business, but you donât want their money. Theyâre just trying to get all up in your business, so they have something to talk about at church on Sunday, besides just me.â
