He had hated just dropping in. His grandmother had taught him better than that, but if he had told Mia they needed to have a talk, he was sure she was going to be in a mood worrying about what he had to say. In fact, he had almost backed out of it. He didn’t want to hurt her. It was the last thing he had wanted to do, but it wasn’t fair to him. His love for her was unlike any other love he had experienced. And he wasn’t sure if it was because she wouldn’t just outright admit she felt the same way or what, but in the moment she opened the door and spoke; eyes bright, his heart started pounding harder than before, “Guess I’m just a ninja.”
The ninja line sent him back to their first date as he stepped inside and shut the door behind him. The Color Run. He had had so much fun that day with her. And their date afterwards getting pizza and winning little rubber ducks from claw machines. And every other plan they had ever made. She made him feel like a kid again. Giddy with excitement when they went and did things together, and the day he almost lost her, was the day he knew he truly wanted to be with her, “Uh, tea’s fine. You know me, not big on day drinking, especially since you’re looking at one of Nashville’s newest firefighters.” He smiled, a little unease in his expression.
Walking to her couch, he paced back and forth mumbling to himself, before deciding to sit down. He didn’t want to hurt her. He loved her too much for that, but he also didn’t want to feel regret or frustration every time he looked at her. Noah wanted to be able to see Mia for the woman she was and loved. Fun. Sweet, when she wasn’t a spitfire trying to talk him into something. Compassionate. Smart. And the list could go on. It’s why the words almost choked him coming out of his mouth, as he hoped she hadn’t heard him, “Hey…I…we need to talk…” Had she caught onto to what he said while she was in the kitchen? I mean, it wasn’t like he was speaking through a wall or a door.
Right away Mia could tell there was something up with him. He seemed nervous for some reason, something that wasn’t normal for Noah. If there was one thing she could say about the boy it was that he’d never given any indication that Mia intimidated him which was something that had always drawn her curiosity. A lot of men seemed so sure of themselves but Noah, she believed, actually was. So seeing him like this was making her nervous as she started the kettle for the tea was making.
She looked up when he revealed what she thought was making him act this way, her eyes widening slightly. His goal to become a firefighter had been brushed off by her almost a year ago when he’d brought it up, not sure why she should have cared at that point. But now that she knew him, now that she was attached, it was a different story altogether. Not that she would admit she was attached. “Noah...you did it? You’re actually a firefighter?” The fear that gripped her heart in that moment almost toppled her over. For as long as she had known him she had pushed aside any sort of feelings she had maybe allowed herself to have but now she was being taken back to the night he’d carried her out of that club fire on Halloween and the way he’d gotten hurt in the process. Now he was going to willingly put himself into buildings like that for a living and just the thought of it upset her. “I knew you were working on it but I didn’t realize you could become one so quickly. That’s...amazing. Congratulations.”
But that wasn’t it, was it? The way he was pacing and talking to himself told her that there was something else on his mind and Mia wasn’t sure she wanted to know what that was. She busied herself with the tea until the words hit her, those dreaded four words that she couldn’t stand. Nothing good ever followed them. For a moment she wanted to pretend she didn’t hear him, to walk into the living room and start kissing him as congratulations for his accomplishment. Maybe it would make him forget about those words altogether. But that wasn’t Noah. She knew even distracting him for a moment wouldn’t stop him from talking later on so she sighed softly and looked at him over the kitchen island. “That doesn’t sound good. Are you moving or something?”
