Research shows that black males are disproportionately more likely to be placed in special education and classified as mentally retarded and emotionally disturbed.

They are also more likely to be placed in segregated placements, more likely to be educated in poorly performing schools and more likely to be referred to the juvenile justice system for infractions that occur in school. Research shows that black males are disproportionately more likely to be placed in special education.

They are also the least likely to be provided the positive supports and the assistance that they need in order to succeed.

None of this is new.

‘MythBusters’ puts the classic insult ‘You throw like a girl!‘ to the test.

The hit show “MythBusters” wanted to see if there’s a distinct difference in the way a guy throws a ball versus the way a girl throws a ball.

They put eight people in four different age groups up against each other to analyze their throws. They had the subjects throw with their dominant arm first. Then they had them use their non-dominant arm because, without practice or training of any sort, it’s sort of like you’re throwing for the first time. This is when the real results showed.

When using their non-dominant arm with zero training, the guys were more accurate, but the girls threw faster.

They also had an episode where they tested pain tolerance and found that women, on average, have a higher pain tolerance. I love their gender episodes.

Voices From The Civil War- First Hand Account Of Morgan’s Raiders- They were gentlemanly and represented the best manhood of Kentucky and their native states.

Mr. Johnson, interviewed near his home in Indiana during the 1930s, was a young man during the Civil War. Even so, his memories concerning John Morgan’s cavalry raid through his neighborhood were still fresh in his mind.

“… The gray figures of Morgan’s men appeared out of the distance. They showed the strain of a hurried and harassed march; both men and beast were weary. Four of the men stopped before me perched on the fence and said, ‘Son take these canteen and fill them with water’. I didn’t refuse but hurried across the road to Mr. Alexander’s Robinson’s well where two or three other boys were drawing water for the Raider’s men with a windlass. The well was wide and only about nine feet deep. As soon as I filled my canteens I passed them among the men and kept returning for more water until the well was dry. After this short period of service we were mustered out; and Morgan, the raider, with his men went their way with their jangling and clanking of arms to disappear in the horizon toward old Paris.”

There were some three thousand soldiers in the Confederate cavalry. They were gentlemanly and represented the best manhood of Kentucky and their native states. Of course in war and in that large a crowd there would be some unpleasant things, but on the whole the men were polite. Whenever they saw a horse they wanted they exchanged their worn out horse for it usually with the suggestion of “Let’s Swap, I think you can plow all right with this horse”. Many of the horses left were really better than the ones taken but were worn out and many had sore backs.

Adah Isaacs Menken (1835-1868) Civil War Pin-Up Girl

She sold cartes de visite at her performances, of herself basically in her undies, and many made their way to the Civil War trenches to serve as pinups

During the Civil War she was arrested as a Confederate agent—and became America’s first pin-up superstar, Menken married and left five husbands. She could sing and dance, and she was a wonderful comic. She was fond of gambling the night away dressed in men’s evening clothes. She rode horses astride, took and discarded lovers, and wore revealing sheath dresses in an age of hoop skirts.

Onstage Menken did a little of everything, whenever possible when garbed in form-fitting tights, whether minstrel acts, celebrity impressions of noted actor Edwin Booth (the brother of Lincoln’s assassin), and tightrope walking.

Adah Menken smoked in public, was courted by Mark Twain and Dickens, stole headlines from Abe Lincoln’s presidential campaign, was a pin-up girl for Union and Confederate troops, defended homosexuals, and may well be the first American master at the art of exposure. Her storied life is the topic of a new book called A Dangerous Woman: The Lifes, Loves, and Scandals of Adah Issacs Menken, America’s Original Superstar by Barbara and Michael Foster.

Menken died after suffering a collapse in Paris after rehearsals, just eight days before her collection of poems, Infelicia, which wrote knowing she was dying, was published in 1868 (Richards 197). The work, dedicated to Charles Dickens, included poems that focused “on the impossibility of human connection and the voices that no one is willing to hear” (Martin 253; Levin and Whitley 6). Speculations on the cause of her death include tuberculosis, an abscess in the side, peritonitis, or cancer (T. A. Brown 335).
