California is taking a stand against anti-LGBTQ states
California has a travel ban of its own.
On Thursday, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra blocked any state-funded travel to Texas, Alabama, South Dakota and Kentucky because of anti-LGBTQ legislation passed in these states.
These four states join a list of others — including North Carolina, Kansas and Mississippi —where nonessential travel is restricted for government employees.
Taxpayer money “will not be used to let people travel to states who chose to discriminate,” Becerra said, according to the AP
Each of the four states has passed anti-LGBTQ legislation since 2017 began. Read more (6/23/17)

In collaboration with @farfetch, LACMA enlisted 19 designers to create exclusive one-off designs inspired by works from our permanent collection for the Wear LACMA: 50th Anniversary Edition.
The designers shared the art inspiration behind their individual pieces and their thoughts on this exciting initiative:
Jennifer Meyer
‘I’m a huge fan of Ed Ruscha — both as a person and as an artist — and I also consider myself a California girl through and through. Ruscha’s Made in California has always been a personal favourite of mine. I love that the print is monochromatic, simple and bold. My first Wear LACMA piece is a necklace in my signature font using gold and diamonds, for California natives like myself to wear. I also wanted to design another that simply said “California” because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love California!’
Esquivel
‘I continue to be inspired by The Indian Woman with Marigold by Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez, which I discovered while working on the previous project with LACMA. I designed an ankle boot in soft lavender to capture the humble spirit of the woman admiring a bouquet of beautiful yellow flowers. For the second piece, I was inspired by the Manioc Flour Bowl from Brazil in the early 18th century. The bowl is opulent yet utilitarian. I created a heeled ankle boot in luxurious gold leather that is very wearable and practical for everyday life.’
Anita Ko
‘I was inspired by the Duke Kahanamoku’s Redwood Surfboard, circa the Twenties. When I saw it I thought it was so cool and amazing, I just loved the weight and shape of the board, and thought it was a perfect piece of art. Growing up in Los Angeles surfing was always a part of my culture, so I wanted to combine my luxury aesthetic with surfing.’
Juan Carlos Obando
‘I was extremely interested in using a photograph of the Museum when it first opened — an image that displayed the architecture as well as the visitor. Being exposed to the photography archive was an incredible experience and enabled me to choose a visual piece from the museum’s history and apply it to a representative of California’s fashion, The Leisure Poolside Caftan.’
This post is part of a series related to the Fall 2015 Wear LACMA collaboration. (text via Farfetch)

[very happy, it’s wine time] That’s why things are more chill out west. We may hate each other sometimes, but we’re so far away all we can do is send each other angry emails [laughing while sipping her wine]
Oh, wine is wine if you just wanna drink. Next time, let me know, and I’ll bring over some fancy Napa rosé.
But it’s only like what [counts on his fingers] like 3 of y’all out on the coast? Everyone else in the middle of the country being boxy and doing nothing.
N-Napa rose? That actually sounds pretty good. Though bringing it back to drama, I wanna know your opinion on something. [pouring a glass of his own, he takes a long sip, leaning forward he cracks a smile.]
So I heard, that Oregon is trying to one up you with wine. Suppose to be the next Napa or something. Your thoughts on that?
It works fine with me. I stay in my corner of paradise, and everyone else can farm their potatoes, or whatever [snorts]
[little eye roll] Ah, yeah that. It’s not anything I have super solid opinions on yet, but hey, [big drink] if Oregon wants to try, all it ends up being is more wine for everyone. Besides, I got a 300 year head start, so it might take a while for them to even start to be as good as me [big cheeky grin]
((Ended up sketching Mike from his thread with CA.))
beverwijck:
Yes I do have a girlfriend, sometimes I wonder if she does like me since she always sides with Masshole.
But yeah I like to believe that she likes me. [laughs] What about you, I mean it’s a given since you’re, California and all.
Oh, I’m sure she does. I just can’t always keep all that east coast stuff straight, so much drama.
Me? Oh, if anyone is interested it doesn’t concern me [little laugh]
[Annnd they are drinking wine. Don’t ask where it came from, just roll with it. Mike, like the gentleman he is, pours Angel a glass.] Tell me about it, I guess because its so many of us, just packed in such a small amount of space. Shit is bound to pop off. And sorry in advance, I know it ain’t wine that you particularly like? But my wine can go toe to toe with yours…I’m sure.

goldenavocado replied to your post “I really don’t like any of y’all, but there isn’t much that I can…”
Well I should hope you at least like someone, don’t you have a girlfriend? Or was that someone else
[smiles brightly] Cali lives! I thought you would’ve evaporated by now?
[laughs] Well, with El Niño, I think I’ll pull through.
And I notice you didn’t answer my question.

A handful of modest weather systems have brought generally light precipitation and cold temperatures to parts of California over the past week or so, mostly in the north. While these systems did little to alleviate long-term water deficits, they did preferentially add some more water to the already healthy Sierra Nevada snowpack. In fact, statewide snow water equivalent is slightly above average for this calendar date–no small feat in a time of record global warmth and immediately following California’s most abysmal snow conditions in hundreds of years.
Clearly, though, there is still a very (very) long way to go if California is going to see substantial drought relief this year. Fortunately, the short-term outlook is quite favorable.
