Presentation Review

Everyone did a great job but I think Hudson’s project was really good. In his first genre he made an Instagram as his social media site. He used vegan hashtags which helped him draw attention to the cause and the audience and obtain followers. His Instagram was visually pleasing and he received many likes and comments. This portrays how his genre of Instagram to get veganism out to the world was effective. I really liked the videos in his Instagram because it made his account personable and people could relate to it. He also created a video which he made showing him making vegan food. The video was great quality and looks professionally made. He added in the nutritional information at the end to show that eating this way is healthy. He also made a buzz feed article which was really cool. He used pictures, videos, and gifs to capture the attention of the people looking through it. All of his genres were very creative. Buzz feed articles are very popular right now so that was a great genre to do. He stood out from the rest of the class because not many other people did Buzz feed articles. It was interesting to see how he said he might become vegan next year because of his roommate. This shows how he is truly interested and passionate in this topic. He used the class twitter to promote his project. This captured my attention even before he presented and it was cool to see his Instagram unfold. I also like his hashtag #veganbestrong because it is catchy. I think everyone did a great job.

Presentation Review

Everybody’s presentations were surprisingly good! They were all unique in there own way and I learned a lot form each presentation. I didn’t realize how many people in our class have been affected by childhood cancer in some way. There were two presentations today alone that touched on the subject of cancer in children. This topic hit close to home, having been affected by childhood cancer in my life. I think that both of these presentations were very effective because they both provided load of information on the subject matter such as, including a ton of statistics. The one about the “9 signs of depression” i though was extremely effective. Many people do not know that many kids, during and after treatment become very depressed. I have witnessed this first hand and i do think that this needs to be a topic that needs to raise awareness. I also think that the informative video made was also very good. It really hit you with all those pathos, because of that sad song that was playing in the background. it kind of reminded me of those sad dog commercials you see on tv.

Glad to hear people liked the topic! I got really nervous so I wasn’t sure if I relayed what I was thinking into words haha. I also really liked the poster with “9 Signs of Depression” and I think the color scheme worked well because cancer is a very touchy subject, so using colors such as blue while incorporating a picture of a patient, is a cooling color which can also be a color of sadness, while using red would be too overpowering in this setting.

WRITING INTO THE DAY What is the message of this campaign? Purpose, audience, mode, medium, rhetorical appeals, style, design. Is it effective?

The message of the campaign is that there is still slavery in the world and we need to end it. The logos as the the way it is mapped out pretty simply, persuading viewers to get involved. To end slavery, the solutions are to education, service, outreach, and the promotion of awareness. The audience is FSU students. The mode is text and the medium is the poster and side walk chalk. Ethos is used by having specific facts on the poster, but I feel like it was lost because it was a homemade poster. Pathos is used with the term “rescue thousands. Protect million. Prove that justice for the poor is possible.” I’ve seen other signs through out campus that added even more ethos, I came across a sidewalk chalk message that stated that slaves are humans to and it made me want to do something about slavery, because I agreed. I think that this campaign is effective because of the number of sidewalk chalk they put throughout the campus. With the chalk, I don’t even realize I’m reading it until I actually do so I think it is effective and educating those who don’t like hearing about controversial things.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is a marketing technique that uses social media and other types of technology to try to increase sales and awareness of certain products. Viral marketing circulates ads and types of branding across social media like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. The viral marketing that works the best is when it is personal and has the reader or viewer wanting more. A sneaky way viral marketers use their tricks is to use something called VRL marketing, which is a strategy to advertise your product to viewers without them being aware they are being marketed to. An important part to viral marketing is where it is getting received, it must be able to reach the right audience. The reason viral marketing is so successful on social media is because of the wild range of viewers present. Viral marketing is most effective when using humor or some type of an emotional appeal, causing a controversy among viewers, or if it actually contains helpful/useful material. I really enjoyed the video on the Best Viral Marketing Campaigns of the Sleep Art, I thought it was cleaver, cute and funny, I also enjoyed the music that went along with it. I feel like an important part to these viral ads is to make it the least like an advertisement as possible and try more to make people laugh and smile and have a good feel for your brand.

I really liked how you explained the VRL marketing strategy because it made it easy to understand. When you said that social media was successful for viral marketing because it reaches a large amount of followers, I think that it is also successful because some sites like Twitter and Facebook suggest accounts that have the same interests. So the people that are interested in the same things are exposed to campaigns that interest them and are more likely to share and comment.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is the process in which you display a brand or idea to the public. This process is obviously done trough a digital form and utilizes many techniques in order to put out a message. With the use of different techniques viral marketing in todays day and age is extremely efficient and allows ideas to spread rapidly through different cultures and countries through a digital medium. Viral seeding seems to be the biggest aspect of a viral campaign that attributes to its success. Without Seeding any viral campaign can fail due to the lack of “traction” that gets it starting. Most of seeding has to do with pathos evoking emotion into the audience through the use of jokes, Videos, or ego boosting/dramatic statements. After an emotional connection or message is evoked it is then important to promote your message. Also it is important that your message creates a “buzz.” By being able too create an atmosphere where your audience is spreading your message within themselves you are able to let your momentum then work for itself. Also, the last thing is to promote through the biggest social media websites where exposer is most likely. Sites like twitter, Facebook, Snapchat are all optimal sites to virally market yourself.

I also like that you talk about where a lot of viral marketing occurs, I didn’t even think about Snapchat but that now has marketing on it as well!

Great analysis on viral marketing Seeding is very important in making sure that a viral marketing campaign is successful. I think it was very effective when you have a large following, which is why pro athletes and other celebrities are always being sponsored by companies because they know that if followers them wearing their clothing or endorsing their ideas then their followers will literally follow.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is the way that companies and individuals spread their ideas to a large audience. The large audience is achieved by word of mouth, but it does not always work. There is a formula used to achieve the highest number of audiences. In “7 tricks to Viral Web Marketing,” Thomas Baekdal reveals that the formula to an effect viral marketing campaign is through a seven step process. In order to be successful, the viral marketing campaign must “Make people feel something” (Baekdal), “do something unexpected” (Baekdal), create a meaningful storyline that does not resemble an advertisement, “make sequels,” and allow for easy access to audiences, easy sharing, and easy ways to comment. When these steps are achieved, campaigns using viral marketing may succeed. In addition, the media being used for these campaigns is also essential. Using a source of authority, such as a professional football player on the effects of CTE to tweet your campaign would allow for a large number of people to access one’s ideas. When launching these campaigns, networking can jumpstart a campaign, so knowing someone with a large following and getting them to help in the campaign by blogging or sharing your ideas can make viral marketing successful.

The poster that stood out to me was the poster with the bears because my favorite animal is bears and I often have trouble picking which kind of bear is my absolute favorite (normally it’s polar bears but I have been leaning towards brown bears or panda bears lately). I like the logos appeal of the poster because its pretty relaxed and fun. All the bears look super cute and fun and it looks like the some of the bears are smiling which appeals to ethos. It also simply titles itself as “Bears” and names each bear next to their image. I do not think it would have stood out to me on the internet if it were not for Buzzfeed’s comment “Which bear is the best?” because it made me actually stop and think about which bear I liked the most. I think with that question, the poster becomes a great conversational piece. My favorite bear on this poster would still be the polar bear because he is smiling but I’m sure others would have different opinions. What I learned from the poster is that you do not need a lot of things to make your poster good— sometimes simplicity is the best.

A time when the movie was better than the book was the Great Gatsby. I think I might be biased because I was in the English class when I read the Great Gatsby so I was subject to over analysis. The sound track to the Great Gatsby added a great tone to the movie. I remember when the movie came out I was obsessed with the soundtrack and I’ve never been like that before. I still listen to it sometimes. It was really good about portraying the emotions in the scenes. From “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” to the song about “no church in the wild,” music influenced the tone of the movie. The music was innovative and mixed musical tones from the 1920s with the modern music we listen to now. I didn’t understand how obsessed Jay Gatsby was with Daisy until I saw Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance in the movie (side note: Leo always creates a great obsessive character). The parties, also expressed as large in the book, seemed even larger in the movie. My favorite scene was the scene when Daisy and Gatsby started throwing his shirts all around the room to the song “Young and Beautiful.”

Warehouse Visit

I went to the Lip Synch Battle at the Warehouse. The Battle benefited The Southeast Review. They raised money for it with three forms of media. The first media used was ticket sales which they charged each audience $10 to watch the battle. The second media was a silent auction where guests could bid on various goods. The third was a bake sale (I helped myself to the delicious cake pops). Audience members were reminded throughout the show to bid on items and purchase baked goods by the inviting signs and energetic MC. The battle very interesting and filled with many genres of songs. Performances from Cabaret to Beyoncé’s latest hits were performed. The three judges were from the FSU English Department. They were originally supposed to provide three scores for individuality, technique, and stage presence, but the event was pretty laid back and I don’t think the audience really would have cared for three scores so the judges only gave one score each. There were seven performances that lip synched. My favorited was the group that performed Beyoncé’s hits. They were also the crowd favorite and were awarded to the finals because of that. I think that the most successful performers were the people that really had fun with their routine and left it all on stage. The judges told the audience that they would score higher on performances that used to full stage, joking that they would give extra points for any performer using the ceiling beams. Every performance had the rhetoric appeal of pathos through their humorous dance moves, costumes, and song choices. Even the first act that had a serious song, Cabaret, was funny because of her stage presence. The audience was accepting of all acts and it was a really positive experience for me. I can see why writers are willing to have live readings at the Warehouse.

My favorite book of all time is Ella Enchanted. The characters are Ella, Prince Char(ming), two evil stepsisters, a fairy godmother, and an evil stepmother. The setting is in a make believe town and the woods. The story is about a girl who was cursed with a spell of obedience which means she must do anything that someone commands her to do. This becomes pretty dangerous out in the woods because Ella runs into all sorts of creatures. Her evil stepsisters often take advantage of her curse. The central conflict is that Ella has this curse and it is ruining her life. She must break the spell which she does with her own inner strength. The audience of this play is Cinderella fans, as it is a rendition of the Disney classic. So often the audience is young. The purpose is to demonstrate that our own inner strength can overcome our life obstacles. The mode and media is a print novel. The genre conventions are fantasy and romance. The design is just an ordinary novel, but it is interesting because the author adds letters within the story which voice the thoughts of other characters. I think the overall source is the Disney Classic Cinderella. It was evident she was inspired by the tale, and her perspective on the tale is really interesting. I think it predominantly appealed to pathos because of all the emotions of finding oneself and the humorous tone.

My Issue, My Genre

What I found most interesting from reading BBG chapter 2 is that use of narrative genres traces back to the paintings on the cave walls before written communication. I took this to look into my own project. If cave drawings served as a narrative genre than I can use various Instagram and twitter accounts in order to show a story of progress. Seeing as my issue within my community is detrimental motivation, I would be able to use the narrative genre to tel the story of my friend who runs marathons. Her story consists of a stress fracture and severe burn marks that hindered her career in running. I remember how she would call me disheartened from looking at various social media accounts that show off runners running, their bodies, and their progess. She felt put back. Another story would be that of Elizabeth Wright. As a child she was overweight but somewhere along the line something motivated her to work and work until she became the fit person she is now. In my opinion, using stories of people who failed due to Detrimental Motivation and people who pushed passed Detrimental Motivation would have the push my Project needs in order to show that although Detrimental motivation is an issue, that it can be conquered.

This is great!! I didn’t even put that together.  You are completely right about the drawings  being a narrative.  I guess the saying is “A picture is worth a thousand words” or something along those lines.  Instagram is todays cave drawings for sure.  The narrative behind your friend running and being injured all those times seems like it would impact viewers much more if they could see the injuries.  That is very sad to hear about her career. Just hearing about your friend impacted me and I haven’t even read her story.  I know several people that have had knee injuries that have ended or motivated them more in their careers.  My issue would use victims of violence from children if mine was a narrative.  I believe that the pathos from these stories would be a huge fuel for people to join the community or issue. Maybe you could use a video too. Pictures are effective but videos might send it over the top. Great post!!

I think that narratives are a great way to making the emotions of an issue come to surface. This is evident in your simple summary of two people that have made that personal connection to Detrimental Motivation because if audiences are exposed to a person who tells them about the issue it becomes more personal to the audience too. I think it would cool to see a poem written about Elizabeth Wright because the imagery of a girl “who pushed and pushed” really stood out to me.

Narrative Genres

I think narrative genres is the genre that most benefits my issue. The issue on salary pay with my community of elementary school teachers is always heard of, but no one really knows what it is like going through so much schooling and workshops, even having a masters in childhood education, and still not even making a living wage. I always knew about my issue and I am all for raising up the teaching salary, however I never truly knew how bad this issue was. The teacher that I interviewed really opened up my eyes, and explained to me the hardships that teachers go through with such low pay. I’m thinking of turning her interview into a poem or a story, so more people can be aware of her situation. The best way I can describe narrative genres in for example, child brides, you see it everywhere and it is something that has existed since the beginning of time, however most people take little to no action. However when the brides themselves tell their stories such as on a documentary or they manage to get a divorce (which is almost impossible), they decide to write a book, every one eats it up and starts talking about it. Having someone from the community you’re writing about share their experience in my opinion really helps the audience connect with the person and their issue.

I think a narrative would be great for your topic because I don’t think people understand the amount of things teachers put into the classes. Many times teachers end up paying for things out of pocket! A poem would be a great way to bring forth pathos and I could imagine a repeating line of why the teacher loves her job in each stanza.

Narrative

The issue I am covering is the issue of concussions in the National Football League. The paper I wrote is pretty clinical, because it is a research paper but I think since this issue completely turns a player’s life upside down emotion needs to be displayed to help the issue become better understood. I actually read a narrative when I was researching for my paper. The narrative was written by a football player and his response to learning about the effects of CTE. He had not suffered from CTE but his fear for CTE was prominent throughout his article. It was interesting because he also talked about the benefits of playing football and covered the topic of if it was worth it for him to be at risk for CTE when football gave him a great lifestyle. I think it would interesting to compose a narrative about a player suffering from CTE, as there are many psychological effects that audiences do not realize. If I were to do a narrative I think I would struggle with which details to cover and which ones not to because CTE is created by traumatic head injuries over time. So it would be hard to talk about a five year old injury and the talk about a 65 year old man struggling from CTE. I think I would need to really make sure that my narrative is structured very well by having flash backs of the players injury as he struggles from CTE in the present.

Ted Talk

I found the Ted Talk to be very interesting. The presenter captured the audience by saying that by the end of the presentation she would add 7 minutes to their lives. I think that this was an effective way of using Logos because it later provided framework of how she would provide those extra 7 minutes. It presented the audience to mentally challenge her to prove herself in that she could add 7 minutes to their lives, because it is kind of a claim that does not seem logical. But, paired with the rhetorical appeal of ethos, such as that her mode and media was a TED Talk, she had many claims that were backed up by reliable sources, and she addressed the counterarguments of her claim. Her overall claim was that fun things, like video games, are essential to living a satisfying life. I found it interesting that she tied it to the regrets people have in life, and it was really effective that the outcomes of playing games actually were similar to the regrets people often have in life. By having them connect she was able to have a concrete and easy selling point: playing videos games will help improve your quality of life. Pathos was created by her personal story with depression. Overall I thought her argument was very effective.
