Donuts, Donuts galore!

Oh man, here we go... After many years of eating both Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme, I will admit that my heart belongs with Krispy Kreme, and not just because my name starts with a K! When I think of getting a good glazed donut, my mind immediately drifts over to Krispy Kreme. Right when the donuts come off of the conveyor belt and into the box, when you lift that first fresh hot donut from the corner and place it on your tongue, it just melts away in your mouth and brings you to your own happy paradise.. well, at least for me. I’m not saying I don’t like Dunkin Donuts’ donuts, but I don’t enjoy the film that is left on the roof of my mouth when I finish eating one of their donuts. It leaves me unsatisfied and it just feels waxy. I find Krispy Kreme donuts to always be fresh, but the only problem is once I eat one, there’s no stopping because they just melt away. Because of convenience reasons I find myself heading to Dunkin more just because it saves me a 25 minute drive at home, but I usually don’t end up getting a donut from Dunkin even when I do go because I’d rather eat a bagel there and now have to think about the way my mouth feels after. Krispy Kreme is the one for me!

Presentation Day

I found that out of all the presentations, Hudson’s Vegan campaign was the most effective. Not only did his Instagram have a large following, but all his pictures were relevant to the campaign. He also received a lot of feedback, meaning obviously his project worked well because it drew in attention from complete strangers. The whole objective was to see how people reacted. He showed that 77 people liked ones of his pictures and he got all kinds of comments from different people. I also found that it caught my attention, and I have never considered changing my diet. But it appealed to me and other people outside of the Vegan community. Also, the video he made seemed really easy to follow along with and was an effective composition. Overall, definitely my favorite. Great job!

I agree that Hudson’s was really effective! He was a strong and engaging presenter and that really helped make his presentation exciting. I think I also agree with you that his planning for the campaign was effective and his camping results were successful with his large following. The presentation also made me consider changing my diet because his compositions and genres were so appealing and well-done!

I found Hudson’s campaign to be extremely effective as well. It was clear that he didn’t gain his followers overnight and he took the time to gain followers and his posts were obviously liked by this audience. I wish I was able to get the amount of feedback that he got as well. I really loved his use of his genres and the way he kept all of his genres tied in. Overall a great presentation and a well organized campaign/ project!

Presentation Review

Everybody’s presentations were surprisingly good! They were all unique in there own way and I learned a lot form each presentation. I didn’t realize how many people in our class have been affected by childhood cancer in some way. There were two presentations today alone that touched on the subject of cancer in children. This topic hit close to home, having been affected by childhood cancer in my life. I think that both of these presentations were very effective because they both provided load of information on the subject matter such as, including a ton of statistics. The one about the “9 signs of depression” i though was extremely effective. Many people do not know that many kids, during and after treatment become very depressed. I have witnessed this first hand and i do think that this needs to be a topic that needs to raise awareness. I also think that the informative video made was also very good. It really hit you with all those pathos, because of that sad song that was playing in the background. it kind of reminded me of those sad dog commercials you see on tv.

Glad to hear people liked the topic! I got really nervous so I wasn’t sure if I relayed what I was thinking into words haha. I also really liked the poster with “9 Signs of Depression” and I think the color scheme worked well because cancer is a very touchy subject, so using colors such as blue while incorporating a picture of a patient, is a cooling color which can also be a color of sadness, while using red would be too overpowering in this setting.

Presentation Review

After seeing all of the hard work everyone put into their projects and seeing the type of feedback they got, I believe Adele’s project was most effective. Adele used many different methods to get her campaign out there. She even went out of her way to join Facebook groups that seemed to have an audience that would connect to her campaign and sharing her videos in there to get feedback such as “Netflix and Chill” groups, had the most Pintrest followers that included some of her infographs and other pictures, and created a video clip that showed the perks of going to see something in theatre rather than just sitting at home watching the movie or digital version. She also took the extra step in making a Prezi to show her 3 genres during the presentation which made her descriptions very organized and easy to follow. She spoke very clearly and there was no confusion about why she used each genre because she made sure to describe her reasoning for each aspect of her project. Overall I believed she put in the most work to get appropriate feedback and even showed results of views and comments she got when she put them in different groups. Plus, #stageoverscreen was a very cute hashtag as well.

WRITING INTO THE DAY What is the message of this campaign? Purpose, audience, mode, medium, rhetorical appeals, style, design. Is it effective?

The message here is to help college students learn more about slavery. The sidewalk lets the students know when the event will be held and the poster shows what you can do to help people learn more about slavery. The purpose is to inform, the audience would be college students at FSU, since it takes place on the campus and students would walk by this heading to class or the library. The mode is visual and the medium is face-to-face/print. The rhetorical appeals would be crossed between pathos and logos. Pathos because of the picture in the far right with the caption that is cut off, but it seems to be someone on their knees with their hands tied. It would be logos because it wants to teach kids more about slavery so they used the header of the poster to say “shine a light on slavery”. The style would be chalk & a poster and the design would be printed and hand-written. I believe that it could be effective, but it also seems like something someone would read and just continue walking (like if I saw this, I would probably keep walking... just being honest!) I think if they had some sort of incentive, such as food or something else that college student would be interested in listening to if they received something after for staying to see it, then I think it would make it much more effective.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is essentially using social media and other pages to get people to share the page and market the product without having to spend big bucks on tv commercials or magazine/ newspaper ads. It allows a company to not have to spend extensive amounts of money by getting people’s attention with a humorous or eye-catching and interesting ad, which then gets them to share the ad, which then shows it to a new group of people and allows it to continue to go, well, “viral”.  By seeing a familiar person sharing it, allows the next viewer to believe it has more credibility since they know the person who shared it. It works when the content is motivating, humorous, or entertaining, when it gives people incentives to want to share it, like offering a coupon of some sort or other monetary rewards, or by seeding. Seeding is getting a person(such as a celebrity or person that is well-known in a positive way) that has many reliable followers that would be willing to share something that they shared. By having someone with a high number of followers or friends share the post, it gives the post a better chance of being shared, since people find the shared source to be credible.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is when a company or brand try to increase awareness towards themselves through the use of social network and other technologies. The goal of these viral marketing campaigns is to create messages that appeal to people who are highly present online, and to hopefully have that message spread more and more throughout the web. Viral marketing works because it taps into people’s emotions. When something makes people feel a strong emotion, be it sad, happy, mad, or excited, they want to share it with others. Other things that make viral marketing campaigns more appealing is when something unexpected happens and when the campaign avoids looking like an advertisement. Viral marketing does not work when there is no proper seeding, meaning sharing your campaign in the proper mediums to increase its chances of spreading. It also does not work when it looks too much like an advertisement because people do not enjoy watching them. Finally, viral marketing will not work if the campaign does not appeal to online users. After all, the spread of the campaign is through the internet, so it must appeal to those on it.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is a way to get the brand out among the public. It is a way to make people more aware of the brand as well as getting them more interested. Social networking is a huge way to do this. It’s a very productive way to market the product or brand. Most of the successful campaigns are through social media. The most commonly used ways to get the message across are through, “pass-along based, incentive based, trendy based, and undercover based”. Viral marketing only works if it is done the right way. The term used is “seeding”. Without the right seeding the message, even if it is very effective, won’t reach the public. It also needs the right characteristics. The most successful and enjoyable campaigns have been through thinking about the question, “what would people want to send our?”. The most common answer is humor. Getting people to laugh is an easy way to get them to want to send it to their friends. The way to make sure that it becomes successful is by being consistent and thinking about the audience one is trying to reach.

I really love your explanation. It allowed me to get a summary of viral marketing and what it is and the things that make it successful. I agree that social media would be a big aspect in viral marketing, considering today’s society relies a lot on these pages for a lot of information, so the ads on the side and other things can catch their attention & be a way for companies to get more customers.

After looking at all of the posters, the one that I was most interested in was the one that had the fruits & veggies that were in season(I know, I’m one of not many people that actually enjoys veggies). I really like the fact that it is made with complementary colors (green next to red, orange next to blue) because it attracts the eye more. I found it really cool how each column represents a month and each color represents a season. The purpose is to inform people on what vegetables are in season each month/season and the audience would be kids, possibly in a school cafeteria (seems like one of those posters you’d find hanging up in line when you’re waiting for food at school). The rhetorical appeals would be logos since it is just stating the facts. The style would be categories with 12 columns  & the design would be colorful which attracts attention to a younger audience. Looking at this piece helped me understand how using different colors and methods to categorize a poster can help depict what type of audience you are reaching out towards.

I chose Adele’s song “Hello”. I believe it could be turned into a romance movie. It would be about a girl who is trying to get back with her ex because she is still in love with him and is trying to do anything she could to get back to how they were in the past. It could be revised to have a part where the girl actually finds the guy and they end up dating again and falling back in love, but they end up not working out for whatever reason (whether one of them cheats or ends up fearing the thought of being in a serious relationship again for the same reasons as the first time) and they end up breaking up again and in the ending seen they can actually play the song or just have the song with no lyrics play during the end credits.

My favorite tv show is Greys Anatomy. At this point in the show (season 11; not including characters that were killed off) the characters are Meredith Grey, Sloane, Alex, Joe, Chief, and the other doctors that work around them. The setting is in Seattle Chicago (where the writer/producer lived). The show basically follows around the doctors as they go through day to day life and how they balance their work as doctors in different fields, but still have a friend and romance life. The central conflict changes from episode to episode but it usually consists of saving whoever’s life is on the line at the time(typical hospital drama). The purpose of this show would be to entertain. The audience is teenagers to adults who are interested in medicine or just like watching surgeries/ blood. The rhetorical appeals are usually pathos as they tell a story through each episode and use a lot of dramatic emotions to express hat goes on. The mode would be visual and audio and the media would be video. The genre convention would be narrative since each episode follows along with the doctors daily lives. The style would be story telling and chronological order of events (with a few flashbacks tossed in from characters) and the inspirations of the show are that the writer/ producer is from Chicago and that is where the storyline is based.

Journal #5

My issue on police brutality can be heavily benefitted by the use of narrative genres. Using the direct language of my interviewee, Master Deputy Lorraine Jordan, will establish credibility, or ethos, to my piece. I can, for example, write a short memoir about Jordan’s career with law enforcement, recreating her experiences for readers. I can also take the same idea of a memoir, but have it be from the perspective of an officer who has experienced police brutality first hand, adding to the credibility of my piece as well as creating a personal connection, which will provide pathos. The way I plan to use the narrative genre in project 3 is by having a visual element to draw attention to the issue I will be covering. Therefore, I will try to create a graphic memoir or possibly a photo essay, following a previous police brutality case. The narrative genre will also help my issue due to its sensitivity. I will be covering police brutality, but from the unpopular opinion of having to support the men and women in uniform who put their lives at risk to protect and serve our communities and our families. The narrative genre will help with the pathos I need to get people to think about the lives of the officers.

Sexual Orientation Conversion Therapy

The issue within my community is one that circles around personal feelings and stories from those who have endured it. From writing my paper, I found that most people are either completely for conversion therapy or completely against it. I, personally, was one who was strongly against conversion therapy. I thought it was a barbaric treatment that used electroshock therapy or temporary paralysis based on the knowledge I received from television shows (embarrassing, I know). Throughout my research I was able to find stories that supported my thoughts on the matter. What I didn’t expect was to find stories that showed that conversion therapy was helpful and not barbaric. The narratives I found helped change my outlook on the issue. They didn’t necessarily make me for it, but they made me see that if its done correctly and the person is seeking the treatment for themselves and not because someone made them, it can work. Narratives in my community help people see more than what they see in media or on t.v.. They also help strengthen the argument of the side they are on.

Like my own topic, outsiders looking in on the topic may get the wrong idea from what they see in the media and on television. I like how you showed how simply relying on the media and television may not always give you the correct vision or story on what a topic is really about. Telling your own story of how deeper research changed your mind somewhat about the topic also helps show how narratives can be useful for your topic.

I really like how you took a different viewpoint than how a lot of other people took this journal. You started out with how you didn't agree with those inside your community’s issue, but then you gradually tied in how narratives changed your view on this controversial topic. I think you used great points and that it would show what those on the inside community do to get people to understand what they feel.

Narrative Genre’s

I think my genre would really benefit from a narrative genre because my community is the childhood cancer community. This group of people  focus a lot on their child’s story to get other people’s support by showing their personal stories and therefore, raising more money for research. The narrative genre allows people to tell a story, personal or not, and try to bring attention to something, such as an issue in the community. The narrative genre would be supportive towards those who believe that childhood cancer research needs more funds. The problem with narrative genre’s for my community would be that those who believe childhood cancer doesn’t need money would’t be able to use a narrative to support the counterargument. By adding a narrative genre, I would also be able to include pathos into a subject that gets its best support from the outside community by telling their story about their kids. Pathos goes well with the narrative genre in general and my community issue. I also think using narrative would allow me to elaborate more on how the community advertises about this issue and gets their issue out to those in the outside community.

Ted Talk Analysis

This Ted talk didn't catch my attention at first. Once Jane McGonigal got into adding 7 1/2 minute to the audiences lives, that's when I got intrigued. The audience would be the gaming community & the Ted Talk community. The rhetorical situation would be how playing games is actually good for you. The genre convention is persuasive because Jane is trying to prove that games are good for you as well as narrative because Jane tells her own story. The mode is face to face and the media would be audio and visual. Jane uses a lot of logos by showing statistics on depression and traumatic brain injuries along with a lot of other statistics. She uses pathos to tell her story about her suicidal period and depression. She uses ethos by being on Ted talk and talking about how she has been on the show. All in all Jane used a lot of facts and statistics to support her main point about how playing games can actually be good for people's well being.

The rhetorical situation is that the guy is trying to impress and show that he likes her by giving her a flower, but he sees her with the animal and how they’re holding hands. The audience would be Star Wars fans and Lego lovers. The purpose is to show the new Star Wars Legos by showing something that possibly happened in the moving bringing something for those who watch Star Wars to remember with humor. The rhetorical appeal would be pathos  because it is a funny and/or sad picture. The media would be digital and the mode would be an image. By showing off the Star Wars characters as Legos, it is showing people that watch the Star Wars movies common character and advertising the Legos that they have to make people want to buy them. I would change the background of it. Even thought the red can represent the love or anger the man has for the woman with the animal, Star Wars remind me at least of space so I think the background would be better as space.
