Natures mortes du vivant / Still lifes of the living

for my final project in my photography class this semester, we had to make a series of photos, however we wanted, as long as we had at least five photos. i was inspired by joel meyerowitz's still lives series on a dark/black backdrop. it reminded me of still life paintings from the dutch golden age, often with a dark background (which are some of my favourite paintings). from the beginning of this project i knew i wanted to add an auto portrait twist to my photos, i never really get the chance to do so with the photography i work in, so the idea of making still lifes with mirrors came up to me really easily. but i thought just the mirrors alone was too boring, so with each mirror i decided to portray a part of my personality, while the mirror reflects me as the photographer (dressed in all black, face not shown).

i actually had a lot of fun doing this, and i received many compliments from the other students in my class.

i recently got access to photoshop through my university so i'm spending the day teaching myself how it works with the photos i took of lorde on my point and shoot (they're not so great because i was too far for my old p&s but i'm having fun editing and finally understanding how concert photographers do that little glow on their photos)
