It’s Howdy Jew-Dee Time! I may look like a rodeo clown or a colorful politician running for office at a state fair who’s about to kiss some babies and eat some deep friend Twinkie’s, but I’m actually at Colorado Horse Rescue (@coloradohorserescue ) for their #ManeEvent. Over a quarter of a million dollars was raised tonight to help horses including these adorable minis. Every week, an average of 18 horses are sold at the livestock auction in Fort Collins. Approximately ten are purchased by kill buyers and shipped to Mexico to be slaughtered for meat. @coloradohorserescue saves as many of these animals as they can, in addition to accepting and rehoming horses from families in personal crisis. I met Richard Buckley shortly after Decades opened in 1997. He purchased a neon and black swirl 60s dress on eyelash fabric. Richard asked me lots of questions about was generally keen about why I had opened a vintage clothing store. Within a few days, Tom Ford had popped in and then Lisa Eisner. All explained that Richard had told them about this new vintage store on Melrose Avenue and the youngish guy who had opened it. Over the next few years, when I flew to Paris to shop for vintage or go to the flea markets, Richard would often accompany me. I remember asking Richard about the furniture of Jacques Adnet and a desk I’d seen as I was naive to the value of the design. Richard said “buy it” and the desk now resides in the upstairs dressing room at Decades. When my mom would join me in Paris, Richard would take us out for dinner a some unpretentious restaurant on the Left Bank. I fondly remember that Richard loved a tan cotton Paul & Joe shirt I was wearing on one trip to Paris and we tried to track another one down. Richard asked questions and he listened. The last time I saw Richard was in Bel Air at the home of Laurie Feltheimer for a party to celebrate Jessica Seinfeld’s cookbook. Richard asked about the store, my mom; and shared about Tom and their son, Jack. I asked about his health and we spoke of a doctor in London. I wish I’d told Richard how integral he was to the success of Decades. I wish I’d explained how he had shaped my taste since I continue to treasure the designs of Jacques Adnet. When you visit Decades and step into the upstairs dressing room, take a pause to admire the metal and leather desk. It’s there because of Richard. Rest In Power, Richard. My first speech in two years sans morality clause hydrated with Hallstein and ranch water. Last night I returned to the “stage” and gave my first PowerPoint in nearly two years. Normally I’d give a speech on the history of fashion based on my book, Decades: A Century of Fashion, every few weeks. The pandemic curtailed this. It was wonderful to be at the @claytonmembersclub in conjunction with @alineboutique and @hallsteinwater in Denver. The audience was dressed to impress. This was my first talk since being liberated from my QVC morality clause so let me tell you, it’s fun to swear on stage, sip tequila, and talk fashion history. Thank you @cabanaboycharles for letting me borrow your @siesmarjan by @sanderlak shirt. I’ll be at A Line Cherry Creek today to sign more books and sell sustainable chic from my store @decadesinc.
