Understanding Adrenal Disorders and Your Pet
Adrenal glands can cause problems in your pet in a number of ways. The side effects of these conditions can cause side effects that can negatively affect your pet’s long-term health. Therefore, it is necessary for pet owners to understand the disorders associated with adrenal disorders in order to keep the pet healthy.
Cushing’s Disease
Cushing’s disease, or hyperadrenocorticism, is an adrenal disorder that affects the pet’s entire body. Common symptoms include thinning skin and loss of hair. In addition, Cushing’s disease can cause your pet’s immune system to work inefficiently, its liver to swell, and its blood pressure to rise. Muscle weakness, testicular shrinkage, and facial nerve palsy often commonly occur in pets with Cushing’s disease. If your pet has Cushing’s disease it might excessively pant and develop pimples throughout its body. Fortunately, Cushing’s disease treatable.
With most pets, Cushing’s disease is caused by steroid medication that is prescribed to the pet to control inflammation. When Cushing’s disease is caused by steroids, it is referred to as iatrogenic Cushing’s disease. Cushing’s disease caused by steroids is simple to treat because it simply requires no longer giving steroids to the pet.
In addition to steroids, Cushing’s disease can also be caused by brain or adrenal dysfunction. With some pets, this is caused by a problem with the pituitary gland, which is a gland located in the brain and behind the eyes. In a pet with Cushing’s disease, the pituitary gland begins secreting too much hormone. Sometimes, this is because it receives the wrong message from other parts of the brain. It can, however, occur for no apparent reason. As a result, the adrenal glands are overly stimulated. Often, cancer of the adrenal glands can lead to Cushing’s disease.
Some pets are also more prone to Cushing’s disease because of genetic predisposition. Poodles, terriers, and dachshunds are particularly susceptible to Cushing’s disease. It is possible for cats to develop Cushing’s disease, but no breed experiences it more than others.
Addison’s Disease
Addison’s disease is caused by a deficiency of either cortisol or aldosterone, though the deficiency can sometimes be in both of these hormones. This deficiency causes the levels of potassium and sodium levels to become abnormal, which can be fatal to your pet.
There are two primary causes of Addison’s disease: a faulty pituitary gland or faulty adrenal glands. A pet with Addison’s disease experiences problems with regulating its heartbeat, blood pressure, and kidney filtration. Physical side effects pet owners should look out for include shaking, dehydration, vomiting, and general weakness. To prevent death, your pet needs to be treated with fluids and with cortisol.
Cats and dogs can both be affected by Addison’s disease, but no specific breed of cat is more susceptible to the disease. Certain dog breeds, such as Great Danes, Wheaten Terriers, Rottweilers, Portuguese Water Dogs, Standard Poodles, and West Highland White Terriers, however, are more likely to develop the disease than other dog breeds.

How to Housebreak a Dog
Housebreaking can be a difficult task, particularly if you are not sure how to go about doing. Yet, it is a necessary evil unless you want to clean up after your pet as it makes messes all over the inside of your home. Fortunately, there are many simple steps you can follow to make the process much easier.
Make a Schedule for Potty Training
When it comes to housebreaking your pet, you need to make a regular schedule and stick to it. Part of the schedule should include taking your dog outside in the morning, 20 to 30 minutes after eating and strenuous activity, and right before going to bed.
When you take your dog outside, get into the habit of saying a phrase such as “Go potty.” This will help your dog associate the phrase with the act, which will help it understand later when you ask it if it needs to use the restroom. After your dog does successfully manage to use the restroom, be sure to praise it and provide it with plenty of affection for a job well done.
The only way your schedule will be successful is if you stick to it even when you don’t feel like it. It is also a good idea to establish a regular feeding schedule to help regulate your pet’s digestive system. This way, going outside to use the bathroom can easily be accomplished at the same time every day. Be sure to keep your pet’s diet consistent, as well, because giving it different amounts of food each time will change the way its digestive system reacts.
In addition, you should never keep water out at all times for your pet while you are potty training. Be sure your dog gets plenty of water about four hours before bedtime and then put the water away. If your dog really seems to want water after this time, allow it to have some ice cubes. After your training has been successful, you can return to leaving the water out all night.
A Watchful Eye
Keep in mind that your dog may sometimes need to use the bathroom at times that are not on your schedule. Watch your pet and look for signs of needing to use the restroom, such as sniffing for a place to go. If you do notice this type of behavior, take your pet outside and let him use the restroom. If he has an accident, take him outside right away and encourage him to continue outside. Be sure to praise him when he does go.

Differences Between Flea Products
Fleas can be a major problem for pets and their owners, and there are a wide variety of flea killing and preventative products available on the market. Choosing the right product for your pet can sometimes be a difficult decision. So we've outlined the pros and cons of the various types of treatments below to try and make the decision a little bit easier for you.
Flea Powders
There are two primary types of flea powders: those used on the pet and those used on your carpet. Those that are applied to your pet are not very effective at killing fleas because they tend to wash off quite quickly and do not have much time to work on your pet. Flea powders designed for use on carpets can be very effective at getting rid of fleas in the home. By simply sprinkling the powder on the carpet and vacuuming it back up, you can kill off many fleas. Nonetheless, carpet flea powders usually cannot kill off all of the fleas in a home. Therefore, additional measures are often necessary. And remember, flea powders meant for carpets should never be used on pets.
Flea Bombs
Flea bombs should be used in conjunction with flea carpet powder. These bombs can kill off fleas and help disturb the flea life-cycle, thereby preventing further infestations. Remember that approximately 95% of fleas live in the house and yard. Flea bombs can help take care of this problem, while you work on keeping fleas off your pet and from reinfesting the home. It can sometimes take several treatments of the house to get rid of all of the fleas inside.
Flea Shampoos
Flea shampoos can be an effective way to kill fleas on dogs and cats. They do not, however, provide ongoing protection. Therefore, they should be used to get rid of fleas that are already present. Additional treatments are needed to prevent re-infestation on your pet.
Flea Sprays, Rinses and Dips
Flea sprays, much like powders, can be used to treat the fleas directly on the pet, or to treat the home environment. Frontline is available in both a topical spray for your pet that kills up to 100% of fleas within 24 hours, and a Home and Environment spray that kills fleas, eggs and larvae for up to 3 weeks after spraying.
Permoxin is a concentrated permethrin-based insecticidal liquid for the control of fleas in dogs and can be used as a spray, dip or wash. The product should be diluted before being applied to the dog, ensuring it wets right down to the skin of your pet. Permoxin is toxic to cats and should never be used to treat fleas on cats.
Fido's Fre-Itch Rinse Concentrate is a natural, pleasant smelling, pyrethrin-based rinse for the control of fleas in dogs and cats. The product should be diluted before being applied to the pet as a rinse, spray, dip or in a hydrobath, ensuring the pet is thoroughly soaked with the solution.
Flea Spot-Ons
One of the most popular treatments for fleas today is the spot-on treatment, which is a topical liquid applied to the skin on the back of the neck or between the shoulders of the pet. There are a variety of brands available including Frontline Plus for Dogs and Cats, Revolution for Dogs and Cats, Advocate/Advantage Multi for Dogs and Cats, Bravecto Spot-On for Dogs and Cats, Bravecto Plus for Cats, Advantage for Dogs and Cats, Advantix for Dogs, Activyl for Dogs and Cats, Frontline Original for Dogs and Cats, and Moxiclear for Dogs and Cats.
Many spot-on flea treatments also treat other parasites such as ticks and intestinal worms. Many of the spot-on treatments need to be applied monthly, but you should follow the directions on the packet to ensure full protection. Be sure to select the appropriate strength product for your pet as many of the spot-on treatments are available in a variety of strengths that vary the dosage according to the weight of the pet.
Flea Chewables and Tablets
Flea chewables and tablets are also very popular and available in a number of brands including NexGard chewables for Dogs, NexGard Spectra chewables for Dogs, Bravecto chewables for Dogs, Simparica chewables for Dogs, Comfortis chewable tablets for Dogs and Cats, Comfortis Plus/Trifexis chewables for Dogs and Credelio chewable tablets for Dogs.
Flea Collars
Flea collars can provide long-lasting protection from fleas for your pet. Seresto is one brand that makes flea collars for Dogs and Cats.
