For anyone who doesn’t know, we grew up living off of Brian Jacque’s Redwall series, which we remember most prominently for 1) its depictions of hope in impossible circumstances, and 2) its vivid and enviable descriptions of the food served at feasts. Well, today, 10-15 years after consuming this entire saga, guess what I found at the library.

It has recipes for everything I ever wanted. Strawberry fizz, Blackberry and Apple Cake, classic Redwall scones. And as if that’s not enough, a note from the author himself:

Got another thing off my to-do list! It's based on a scene from Soul Hunter (iykyk), except I wanted Talos explaining it to Eurydice instead of Septimus (because I wanted that final panel). Will still need to do proper art of First Claw someday.

Tried playing around with a style I could use to render these quick, but still make it look good… for future comic projects! Used a hard brush for the linework, and went straight to colors after. Process on my artstation!

Someone's putting the G.R.R. Martin quote of "Ruling in the Medieval period was hard. Like, what was Aragorn's tax policy?"

And I've finally narrowed in on what bugs me the most about that comment. it misses the most fundamental thing about The Lord of the Rings and Aragorn specifically.

Aragorn is The One True King. He is THE perfect monarch for Gondor and the Numenorean line. He will fix things ("The hands of the king are the hands of the healer"), he will reconnect not just the living but the dead and right old oaths that have been wronged.

Aragorn is the classical example of the king. Not an absolutist monarch, but someone who is meant to be good and do good for all in the kingdom.

Was being a Medieval ruler hard? FUCK YES IT WAS. Undoubtedly. But The Lord of the Rings is NOT that sort of story.

Yeah, this is why I hate that comment from Martin. Aragorn isn't a medieval king. He's a mythological king. He's an Arthur Pendragon figure. We don't need to know about his tax policy because it's not relevant to anything in the story. Fantasy isn't historical fiction, nor should it be.

ranking the best things I have heard surgeons say mid-surgery:

1. "Five second rule!" while scrubbed, after dropping a sterile scalpel on the floor (no they did NOT pick it up again but I swear everyone's buttholes puckered)

2. (spoken during the closing of a particularly long and difficult case) "Nurse - my tunes." :heavy metal starts blasting:

3. Gently to a fretful patient, pre-anaesthesia: "It's going to be okay. I promise, I've dealt with worse." As soon as the patient is unconscious: "This is literally the worst thing I've ever seen."

4. [okay this one was a med student] "Wowwww, that's so gross!!" Reg: "Please remember that [patient] is awake for this procedure." Student to patient: "Oh my god. I am so sorry, that was really unprofessional - " Patient, cheerfully, also engrossed with what's happening inside them on the screen: "Nah - it's, like, super gross, right?"

5. [another procedure where the patient couldn't be put under GA] Patient: *starts singing country roads midway through the procedure* Surgeon: *shrugs and joins in with surprisingly good harmony*

My dad is an anesthesiologist, so Take Your Child to Work Day was the best. I was a quiet, well-behaved kid who could be trusted to keep my hands to myself, so with the surgeon and patient's permission, I stood in on some surgeries (several Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses, a handful of cataract removals, an appendectomy and a facial reconstruction*.)

The best things I heard while in the operating theater (I was 10-12 at the time):

The surgeon, poking around the abdominal cavity like a tour guide. "So the purple bit is the liver. Looks healthy."

A different surgeon, mid-gastric-bypass, was cauterizing a blood vessel, and discovered that his surgical glove had a fault in it, allowing the cautery to shock his finger directly. At this point, the silver-haired, very dignified surgeon orbited the surgical suite, saying the kinds of words I didn't realize adults knew.

* Remember kids, never get into a bar fight with a man carrying a lead pipe. Dude had a dent in his forehead.
