I need to process it because I literally JUST saw it but I think a couple of the things that made the odyssey kind of not land for me emotionally are that Nolan as always just can’t write women that well and Odysseus didn’t have interiors. I liked Penelope but her beat at the end of the day was “I want Odysseus” and that would still work if, on the flip side, Odysseus was equally yearning so their stories were equally about each other. Does he yearn for Penelope? Does he love Eurylochus? Does it hurt when his men say they want to cast him off, do they repair that betrayal when he chooses to save them from Cersei anyway? Idk we breeze past these emotional beats. He’s always doing some shit because he thinks it’s the right thing to do. Greek heroes should be pathetic yearners

Spoliers for the odyssey movie below.(sorry for any spelling mistakes)

Ive seen a lot of people talking about and hating in the fact that Nolan didnt show the gods and how that other was just making the movie as "atheist" as possible when, I dont really think thats the case(being said by someone who has read the story, and knows how much the gods just pop up), there is a point of why the gods aren't there. they even say it in the movie about the cyclops, " would you talk to an ant?" Why would a god or goddess actually show themselves to a pathetic ant, moreover why would they show themselves to ant that has disrespected their ancient law of Xenia and produced a trend where that breaking of the law is becoming more normalized. Why would they show themselves to an ant that thinks they can defy their will? They honestly wouldn't, insted they would respond with making his crew suffer for his actions. Oddysus would suffer for quote, "not bringing on a new golden age but bring a death to this civilization"(not exact I know)by breaking the law of the gods, for creating the Trojan horse. Which see started that trend. Which is sung about and seen as a heros tale, as heroic when in reality we see what breaking that law does through the suitors. And oddysus after his journey realizes that his decite was not good, it did not bring a "new golden age" insted it brought hatred and the fall of this civilization(i do think this point shouldve been clearer, even like one line of their percived victory contrastjng oddysus realization) This movie made creative desions to deliver a message, and used the odyssey as a vessel to deliver that message.

Now there are quite a few desions and choices I absolutely hated, the armor and cloths, they way the women were handled and a(my opinion) very shoe horned critique/analysis of a women's place in ancient Greece, that felt very sloppy and I feel like any message they had about that was overshadowed by the main message/critique of the movie. I thought the way the movie was shot was very basic .like the shots themselves were gorgeous but it wasn't dynamic. Very like back and fourth between conversations, one straight shot of a beach and the back of a guy's head. Basic. There were some really good dynamic shots I liked but the majority was pretty basic in my opinion. The way they lit the move was great, the lighting that came from fire gave it a very down to earth kind of feel, the dialog was very elequit but it could've been better in some places, I think the removal of the "nobody" part was strange, and i cant really understand it like I could the removal of the windbag as the windbag isnt really vital to the story Nolan wants to tell but the nobody scene would be a good edition also the dession at charibdis and scyllia was i think handeled kind of messily idk what about it but it annoyed me for some reason, and no its not just the monster design(though that is a part)

This kind of turned into a review but the point stands, the not having the gods in the movie I dont think is a huge issue especially when you look at it as a message Nolan is using the story of the Odyssey to deliver. There are much bigger things with the movie i think should actually be talked about. Such as the mishandlement of the women's storylines, how a greek epic is being told with majority British/American actors insted of Greek actors or at least a majority Greek cast( i dont care about the gender or race of the actors, its incredibly stupid that people are going to critique and attack the actors and movie about, my god) another thing we could talk about is the actual charecters of the crew. you could get away with not charecterizing the crew in a poem but not in a movie, and in my opinion there was a lack of charecter for the crew, Calypso and cerice(all he women in general) where as the three main men, telemaches, oddysus and antionis(i cant spell) felt like fuller characters.

Anyways thats my soap box on why seeing the gods themselves is not a hugely important part for THIS STORY SPECIFICALLY and also my thoughts on the movie itself.
