FT-Ending Thoughts
DISCLAIMER: This is in no way me bashing Mashima or his work! I really respect him and I do realize, that Fairy Tail is in NO WAY anthing else than a shounen manga, where the main focus lies on the adventures of its characters. It is not a shojo manga, it is not only about romance and love and it never claimed to be. These, however, are all my personal opinions and thoughts and probably have no significance anyway lol.
So Fairy Tail ended and as a long time fan I felt like voicing my thoughts and so I’m doing exactly that here!
I’ve already stated this somewhere, but pretty much the only reason I even continued reading Fairy Tail was because of Gruvia and other characters. Honestly, for me it had lost its appeal a long time ago, the story didn’t excite me anymore and became very predictable, the newly introduced characters were often very cliché and the logic started to not make any sense to me anymore.
But now that it has ended, I still feel kind sad and nostalgic about everything. However, as a hardcore Gruvia-shipper and big Jerza-Fan it left me very disappointed. I will definitely read the official translation once it’s out, but here are my initial thoughts..
Here is the thing: As somebody who loves Gruvia and their relationship to bits and pieces, I’ve kind of felt like I’ve been... clickbaited? I know, this sounds so unbelievably stupid and salty, which I kinda am tbh, but hear me out!
You know when you find a video with the most fascinating, over the top title and it promises so much, but you know it won’t deliver? And yet you still click on it out of curiosity and think that maybe it won’t be disappointing at all and leave you satisfied: but it doesn’t. And even though you kinda expected that, you still feel somwhat sour. This is exactly how I feel about the ending.
Mashima has hyped Gruvia (and Jerza as well) up so many times, that I had the feeling something big, exciting, wonderful would happen in the end, but in the back of my mind I knew not to expect that much of a shounen manga. But with all the times he’s teased us, I thought he would at least clear up some things.
For example, I really freaking wanna know what Gray wanted to tell Juvia before he “died” the first time. And also the serious way in which Gray told Juvia, that she’d get an answer after the war left me so intrigued and I was sure that they would have a just as serious conversation in the end. This was also already prefaced by the conversation he had with Erza about clearing things up. I also really really really wished for the same thing to happen, after the time-skip happened and he left Juvia all alone and then said that he’d apologize. I thought he’d do it in a serious conversation! Same thing goes for the time, when during the war, he said that maybe he should apologize to Juvia properly. Aarrrghggghh I just wanted them to have a serious talk once JUST ONCE!
There were just so many questions left.. unanswered. And don’t get me started on Jerza.
Just the sheer way Mashima built this relationship up, with all these cliffhangers made me tune in and read the manga every week, hoping to find an answer. And then the end happened and.. and there was just basically nothing? Sure, they are basically canon and sure Fairy Tail is NOT about romance NOR just about Gruvia.. but my only thought was:; So.. This is it?
I will definitely read the official version once it’s out, however at this point I’m not feeling great about this whole thing. But if this is how Mashima intended things to end, then it should be this way. It is his manga and he can basically do whatever he wants with it and he owes us nothing. Maybe it was just me, who had way too high expectations? I’d love to hear different opinions on this matter!
