Honestly, I think the reason I gravitate towards c!Tommy so much is because he’s literally the embodiment of two of the most important messages to me:
“You’re allowed to want good things for yourself,”
“Making mistakes doesn’t mean you’re always going to be a bad person.”
c!Tommy’s entire arc has always revolved around fighting for what’s important to you and learning from your mistakes, and to me that’s just something really really special. Being told that you don’t deserve to have your own things, your own home, your own friends, and being beaten down for defending yourself? It hurts, and it hurts, and it’s not fair. And sometimes that unfairness turns into bitter resentment, and it can drive you to do unfair things to other people as well. To hurt the people you care about, out of a misplaced resentment for the things that have been taken from you.
But c!Tommy recognizes that he’s made mistakes. He realized that some of the things he’s done have hurt other people and the things that he wanted to do to people weren’t good for him or anyone else.
“I became worse than everyone that I didn’t want to be.”
And he remembered what he truly wanted. He wanted his friends. He wanted his discs. He wanted his home. He wanted to fight for what he believed in, not to hurt the people he used to care about.
He wants to protect the things he loves.
And the few times he does go after someone, particularly c!Dream, it’s because c!Dream has too much power over the people c!Tommy cares about. To him, the person who’s been hurt by c!Dream the most, the only way to defend everyone against him is to take him out of the equation.
“It’s not the right thing to do; it’s the only thing to do.”
c!Dream is dangerous, manipulative, and power-hungry, and there has never been any indication to c!Tommy that he will ever be willing to change.
That’s the difference between c!Dream, c!Tommy, and quite a few of the server members — c!Tommy is willing to learn from his mistakes and change. He’s capable of taking a look at himself and seeing where he is in the wrong, and where he’s in the right. A quote (though unrelated lmao) from cc!Tommy comes to mind here:
“I think the biggest thing is that at the end of the day, you can look at yourself in the mirror and go, ‘I am not an asshole,’ and believe it, you know?”
He makes mistakes, and sometimes his pain makes him hurt other people. But he does the best he can to right his wrongs, and to take a positive path forwards with the few cards he’s been dealt. He’s human, unbelievably so, made of so many flaws and scars and just terrible, terrible experiences, but he’s still trying his best to do what he thinks is necessary and good for the people he cares about and the rest of the server.
c!Tommy is someone who is capable of learning from his mistakes while still holding onto what’s important to him, and to me, that’s something incredibly beautiful.
