Nightmare’s birth pack are descendants of an old and mighty warrior clan. Their territory used to stretch far beyond the horizons, but is now quite small though still well known. The many apple trees that crowd their forest make their prey bountiful and delectable, while their hot springs offer healing properties.
Even though they’re now a peaceful clan that often lend their resources to travelers or neighbouring packs, they’re still highly respected and even feared for their fierce, blood soaked past.Â
The whispered rumors speak tales of twin pups being born with the ancient war leader’s blood still running through their veins, carrying his spirit and instincts. One inheriting the elderly wisdom of negotiation and peace, while the other is shadowed by the youthful thirst for power and war.
These superstitions have brought about conflicts more than once, at times almost leading to the death of the entire clan. To avoid this from happening a tradition was born. Whenever twin pups from the ancient bloodline were born the younger, thought to have inherited the old leader’s negative traits, would be killed at birth. They would then be buried underneath the apple grove in belief that their young spirit would bring peace to the packs within the clan.
This tradition stopped with Nim.
As the current leader of the clan she declared that no pup was born evil and shouldn’t be punished for the sins of the past. She forbade the senseless killing of newborns, and while many agreed and praised her leadership, others grew doubtful of her judgement.
This only worsened when Nim, a descendant of the old leader herself, gave birth to a two pup litter, Dream and Night.
Distrust and resentment started to grow within the already disgruntled pack members as both pups were allowed to live. Nim never disclosed which one had been born first, but many quickly grew endeared by the cheerful and sociable Dream. In closed circles the more quiet and withdrawn Night was nicknamed Nightmare.
No one ever talked about these superstitions close to Nim or the twins, but young Night was quick to notice that part of the clan behaved differently towards him. While Dream was invited to play and given lavish gifts, Night only received cold stares and silent judgment. Confused and self-conscious he started to pull away from social interactions, unintentionally putting the paranoid packmates even more on edge.
Past fears started to bloom as conflicts started to brew, and eventually a small band of soldiers decided to take matters into their own fangs.
They lured Night with the pretense that his brother needed help, away from the crowded center of the territory into the silent apple grove. The grove where he had been meant to be buried months ago. Sensing the oncoming danger Night attempted to run, only to be caught, but before any greater harm could come to him Nim appeared.
The band of soldiers quickly realized that with Nim as a witness they would most likely be banned, if not worse, and with their pent up anger they attacked with little hesitation. Nim fought like the warrior descendant she was born to be, and Night, seeing his mother fighting for both of them, felt his own latent instincts awaken and leapt into the fray to protect her.
Together they managed to slay a few of their foes, but in the end they were still outnumbered. In front of his eyes Night’s mother, one of the two souls who had always loved him unconditionally, was brought down and killed.
The soldiers were soon to disperse after, leaving Night curled up against his mother’s cooling fur, alive but only as part of their new scheme. When one of them led a pack to the grove it took little convincing for them to fall for the lie that it was Nightmare, covered in his mother’s blood, who had killed their beloved leader. Enraged they attacked, ready to correct Nim’s mistake by killing her youngest.
Nightmare, too devastated to argue his innocence, turned and ran. The strength of a long past ancestor kept him moving long past any of his pursuers, into an uncertain future.
Can dragons change their relationships? Say, for example, Cross and Nightmare are talonmates, for a short period of time they become heartmates and then go back, or in reverse, they become wingmates. do dragons decide what bond they have with others?
They do! While they don't decide who they bond with, they are in complete control of what kind of relationship they share with their bonded.
I'd say thornmates are the one that get changed the most, since being bonded for a long time usually ends up with the dragons warming up to each other. Then again, a lot of them keep referring to each other as thorns just to get at each other. They're close now, but they will keep antagonising the other out of love :D
Going back and forth between wings and talons isn't that rare either, as sometimes they wanna test the water, and at times realise they work better platonically and so one.
Heartmates are the ones that rarely ever change. The bond between hearts is really strong and it's not a relationship that's made lightly. If they were to go back to talons there would probably be a lot of regret involved and there's a high chance they will become heartmates again after. Heartmates only truly split up upon death or if there's some really strong betrayal involved.

Sadly I've had very little time for personal art lately and I've been saying no to request on all my blogs D: Just too many thing going on in life atm so when I have time I just draw whatever is on my mind to avoid burn out.

If they're reeving up a breath attack then yeah! That it might cause a strain in their throat to keep that up without actually using the attack XD
Cross is able to create light orbs to light up dark areas tho! And I always imagine his magic ends up clinging to his fur after intense battles, creating lil specks of light that make him glow a bit. He's usually quick to shake these off tho, incase he needs to stay hidden
