One of the most significant symbols of China’s opening up to the world is the fact that more and more Chinese women are lining up to marrying western men. In 1983, Li Shuang, a woman from China’s capital city, Beijing, flew to Paris and married a former French diplomat to China. She became one of the first televised Chinese woman to marry a Western man after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Since then, Chinese women dating and marrying Western men has gradually become a frequent phenomenon in China.
The way in which Chinese women perceive western men is based on their usually vague understanding of western culture. Generally speaking, Western men have clear advantages in Chinese women’s eyes, such as the idea that Western man are usually tall and strong, and that most of them like sports. They supposedly pay attention to their appearance, like clothing and hair style. They supposedly shower and change their underwear every day. They are supposedly very considerate to women, very capable of being romantic, and they are supposedly good in bed. Western men are thought to be well-educated, easy-going, humorous, polite, confident and independent. They are thought to attach great importance to their own rights while respecting other people’s privacy and choices, they value quality of life and they have many hobbies.
In most Chinese women’s eyes, especially the Chinese women of China, Western men are regarded as being on top of the social hierarchy.

A scholar from Beijing said that Chinese women who love foreign men, especially European and American men, reflect a mentality typical of people from a weak country. Just like Japanese women, who are proud of marrying men from the United States, which defeated Japan during World War II, Chinese women worship the national strength of Western countries and believe that all Western men are rich and powerful.
But many Chinese women date Western men simply because they want a taste of excitement and want to enjoy the experience of dating a foreign man. Some just want to practice their spoken English. And there are always Chinese women attracted to Western men’s money, said Xiaoxing, a woman who works in a state-owned enterprise in southern China’s Shenzhen City.

“Young Chinese women, gradually influenced by Western culture, want to date foreign men out of general curiosity. While it comes to marriage, most of them would rationally choose Chinese men due to traditions, but that is quickly changing.” Xiaoxing continued.
A married Chinese woman who had dated white men before said that white men are better in bed and overall lovers. But she emphasized that while it is easy to like a white man, it is hard to love him. And once you get married to a white man, everything changes in a bad way.
“Most Chinese wives of Western husbands are expected give their bodies to their ‘foreign owner’ as sex objects” said Xiaoxiang. While most Chinese women are happily and sexually submissive and obedient to their White husbands, some are redundant to being mere sex toys for some foreign conqueror, expressing that too many Chinese women have eagerly walked this path, giving the Western man the idea of what the Chinawoman is all about.
