myth: astrology doesn't work

fact: astrology used to work perfectly and apparent planetary motion corresponded exactly (+/- 0°0'1") to the progressions of life on earth, until the advent and subsequent ubiquitous adoption of the radio wave introduced so much noise into the ionosphere that communications between the heaven and the earth were irrevocably scrambled; now, astrology still technically works, but it plays out in such a high-entropy set of events (see: pseudorandomness) that it has become functionally indistinguishable from free will.

this is literally unironically 100% true except its not radio waves it was the introduction of artificial calendars and how they altered human behaviour. turtles still believe in astrology.

imagine you live in, say, ancient babylon. not only is the natural world around you (animal migrations, harvest times, etc) aligned with the stars, but also the administration of all civil and religious affairs of the place you live. the two things (the goings-on in the heavens and the earth) were so culturally linked that it became a sort of chicken-and-egg situation, where you COULD reliably predict a persons fortune from their date of birth, and you could certainly predict say the outbreak of war or famine. i believe this because these people believed it, they never questioned it and simply took it as a fact of life.

now lets jump forward to, say, ancient rome. this is roughly where the first whiff of bullshit was detected. it was widely regarded that a large proportion of the native astrologers were quacks, although foreigners were generally considered credible. note that roman civic society was not based directly on celestial observation, but instead on a set calendar which was altered occasionally to make sure it atleast allgned with the seasons. the early christian church took an especially hard stance against astrology.

now lets go to mediaeval europe. the validity of astrology generally accepted, but its interpretation is suspect and reliance on such things is considered sinful. still, popular culture abounds in astrological reference, all farmers and seamen are expected to be atleast somewhat educated in it, and 'evil planet' is legally considered a legitimate cause of death. the civic calendar is now a mix of the old roman calendar overlayed with christian feast days. it is at this point that many educated (and urban) men begin to openly question the concept as a whole. this trend continues through to the 18th century by which point it becomes the general opinion (note the introduction of the gregorian calendar and the gradual rise of industrial urban society)

now were back in the modern day. the stars mean very little to us in our day to day lives, theyre a billion miles away and we can barely even see them in most places. theyre interesting to scientists, sure, but really the only thing up there that particularly matters to us is the sun. and i suppose the moons kinda pretty as well. astrology is still there as a cultural artifact, there are ardent supporters and some weird coincidences every now and then but its mostly just a parlour game for new age women. everyone has an alarm clock now, which we turn them forwards and back once every year. we look forward to the bank holiday, and whatever public holidays we have in our countries. not only is every street lit up all night, but so are our houses. and we all stare at glowing screens all day ontop of that!

but turtles still believe in astrology, although sometimes now they get confused :-(

This is an idea I've been playing around with for awhile, and I finally worked out a design I'm happy with. The outer fill patterns combine where their sections overlap, and the resulting patterns are more intricate than their component motifs would suggest. Blackwork embroidery on blue 14-count Aida cloth.
