Victoire Highwater, former captain of the Queen's Royal Hunting Battalion, is adrift without the surety that being restricted from using her magic once granted her. The one constant in her life is her ongoing habit of getting herself into trouble. The strange thing is, her new companions - and even her old handler-turned friend George - don't seem to mind her foul demeanor or her tendency towards violence. In fact, they welcome her for many of what were formerly her flaws.

Victoire is fair, of above average height, much-scarred by her life's work thus far, and of a petulant countenance. Her magic is white.

Monoculture: or, a Sylvan Tale of Empire Waning

A story by Vic the Ovvlish

1889. Captain Victoire Highwater of the Queen's Royal Hunting Battalion and her handler, Lieutenant George Humboldt, are on a routine, really rather boring witch hunt in southwestern Germany. Queen Victoria has lent them to her grandson, Kaiser Wilhelm II, because he has a little problem with a few witches in what's commonly known as the Black Forest.

Despite all of Victoire's self-confidence born from years of subduing and killing witches in the queen's far-flung imperial holdings, things quickly go wrong when it turns out that the witches they've been sent to kill are expecting them.

Now Victoire and George, themselves witches under the subjugation of the British Imperial State, have to come to terms with free witches having the upper hand in a fight. And what's more - they have become free witches themselves. But this newfound freedom is not without a cost, one that even their new companions could not have predicted.

Set in late nineteenth-century Europe, in a world quite like ours if witches and magic were tangible realities, Monoculture is primarily a story about conformity, queerness, and empire.

I just had to let you know your pathetic William post changed my life. I literally look at it daily I’m not joking it’s one of the most perfect depictions of how I imagine him canonically “behind closed doors” and I desperately need more.
