I feel like Benjamin sleeps like he does in that segment of Kraken holding onto the blanket like a terrified child, I think that continues throughout his life to show his fear of being ostracised by society and also losing the things and people he loves.

I think for me the fear changes throughout the show because all of them devastatingly come true. I think in the sort of post tide era his biggest fear would probably be something about his perfect family life being ripped apart , and it is when Lowen died and Benjamin leaves. And then I think after that I think it is losing Elowen and I think when Elowen gets her diagnosis that completely tears this world apart as essentially he finds out that at that point he is losing the only family he has left and I think that’s why he’s so angry at Benjamin for not being there and supporting him and Elowen
