Have you ever considered the inherent eroticism of mashing the buttons on an arcade game? Do you want to?

I certainly enjoyed some of the weird visuals and trippy sequences, but I hated the way the only woman in the film was written (literally I was trying to figure out a plot relevant reason for her *gestures broadly* but I think they were being sincere, unfortunately) and I also kind of didn't care about the dull main character guy. Like, you can't rely on erotic arcade game theatrics to make your film interesting or compelling.

Oh, I did see Evil Dead Burn (2026) the other day, because the air was poison and we decided to hang out in a movie theater instead of doing other things, and like. It was fine? I felt like the most effective horror moments we sort of rehashes from other films, which again: fine, it's a sequel, but also. Sort of the weakest, I think.

Anyway, hi, I am circling a particular sci-fi and/or horror vibe so we're just here now. Yes, I'm also going to do a theme week about it, I just can't really seem to do much else, this is where I'm at right now.

Gravity (2013)

Oh, just immediately super stressful.

Like, I get that this is tense as hell, but I also had a moment where the plot unfolded before me early on and now it is happening As Foretold, and I'm not feeling that affected by the compelling tension and drama because I already guessed the plot.

The effects are great, this is extremely well done.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah, this is one where, like, I understand, but I don't feel it. I also didn't find Sandra Bullock that compelling as a solo actor. And just...a lot of the story and character stuff that I think was supposed to make me invested in these characters felt kind of flat, despite it being a very well made film with great tension.

You gotta read and watch some old books and films that aren’t 100% modern politically correct. I’m not saying you should agree with everything in them but you need to learn where genres came from to understand what those genres are doing today and where media deconstructing old tropes is coming from.

Also, more often than you might think, they’re not actually promoting bigotry so much as “didn’t consider all the implications of something” or just used words that were polite then but considered offensive now.

When we choose to avoid history because it's Problematic or Says Bad Things, we are choosing to divorce ourselves from understanding how we came from that time to this one, which makes it even more likely for the cycle to repeat, with no one but a few people with shelves of old books aware that it's happened before.

and this shit's important. Media from the past tells us how people from the past acted and thought and behaved.

Plus, a lot of these media pieces were socially acceptable and/or progressive for their time. For example, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, while it contains a lot of words and ideas that are offensive now, was very progressive for its time. The book is a statement piece for how a young man who's grown up in a racist environment, with no words to explain himself other than racist and bigoted ones, decides that the whole system is shit and he's not going to follow those rules any more. So not reading or engaging with it because it uses the n-word a lot really misses the point.

when i was a teenager i used to catch myself thinking "i'm really glad i'm alive right now because of all the cool personal technologies that exist" and when i did i'd think it through and reckon that well, its not like teenagers in the 70s and 80s knew they didnt have ipods or facebook or whatever. they were also happy with the tech they had. and i'd reason that in the future there would be more fun technologies that i dont know i'm missing out on right now and the future will be an even cooler time to exist

anyway i was dead fucking wrong about that last part. i hate personal technologies now. i miss having an ipod that doesnt advertise shit to me and i miss when my htc wildfire didnt harass me 45 times a day to install an ai assistant and then install it anyway when i say no and i miss when the internet wasnt 5 websites all of which i have to log into and i miss when i didnt need an app to talk to my landlord. sorry past me you were actually right about 2009
