âSkyscales are a new and mysterious draconic life form. They use their powerful wings to lift into the air from the ground and maintain altitude and can cling to walls to regain their strength. With a skyscale companion, youâll reach heights youâve only dreamed of.â
âThanks to the Commanderâs training, the skyscale species now has an innate steed-rider instinct and a desire to soar to new heights.â
Skyscales are a new species of lesser dragons born from the Mists out of the disturbances caused by Kralkatorrik and Aurene. Similar to other lesser dragon species, like wyverns and drakes, while they are capable of consuming magic, they are not capable of ascending into Elder Dragons. The original Skyscales were âbornâ from the Mists fully grown, resulting in an accelerated growth rate that eventually killed them prematurely. However, the next generation were born from eggs normally and do not suffer from this accelerated aging.
Acquisition: Getting an adult Skyscale is not as easy as purchasing a Raptor or Springer, but is considerably easier than learning the griffon taming techniques of the Sunspears. Following the first generation of Skyscales, there were many eggs across Dragonfall gathered by the Commander and incubated by Gorrik. Sunâs Refuge still houses the equipment necessary for Priory members stationed there to continue Gorrikâs work of saving the Skyscale species. The speciesâ innate need for a rider creates the Prioryâs demand for future dragon riders to come and apply for a Skyscale. Those accepted will be evaluated and then given an egg to care for. Those with Skyscales already (either from eggs found on Dragonfall or through the application process) are free to breed their dragons and sell or give the eggs to whoever they wish.
Hatching: Despite being unprecedented creatures, the genius work of Gorrik, Taimi, and now more researchers from across Tyria, have unlocked new discoveries into the life cycle of Skyscales. It was confirmed first by Aurene and later by the Commander that exposure of magic to a dragon egg causes it to hatch sooner. Aureneâs egg absorbed magic from the ley line surge while the Commander exposed their Skyscale egg to twelve kinds of finer forms of magic. A balanced exposure to various magics will produce a healthy and standard skyscale hatchling. (I will be documenting the effects of magic on skyscales with the help of some researchers, especially situations when one form of magic is favored above the others- altering the skyscale.) The magic one would need their egg to absorb would be from three powerful sources of: Water, Fire, Ice, Earth, Air, Life, Blood, Growth, Death, Spirit, Fear, and Courage. Variety will produce a healthy hatchling, so leeching off your local Elementalist wonât make the cut!
Imprinting: Immediately after hatchling, a Skyscale will imprint on whoever they see firstâ and maintain eye contact with. The imprintee must be the one responsible to care for the hatchling since they are the dragonâs chosen rider. Non-imprinted caretakers will find the hatchling to be petulant.
Feeding: Similarly to Griffons, Skyscales can eat and digest just about anything. This is why you should play with your pet to avoid them eating or destroying things they shouldnât (more on that later.) Skyscales are primarily meat and magic eaters. To sustain a hatchling, feed them a diet mainly consisting of skyscale food with a variety of treats from any creature. Skyscale food is obtained by throwing 2 Slabs of Red Meat, 1 Charged Quartz Crystal, 5 Globs of Ectoplasm, and 25 Piles of Bloodstone Dust together in the Mystic Forge in Lionâs Arch. You will receive a piece of meat encrusted in a blue, magical substance. (Wear special gloves when handling bloodstone, as it can burn through untreated leather and skin easily!) Adult Skyscales can be fed the same food as well. You should feed a hatchling four times a day until they are ready to leave the nest. A hatchling will not leave the nest until then and will need you present for itâs growth.
Enrichment: Due to their intellect, raising a Skyscale is not unlike that of a child. Because of this, they need regular playtime to encourage imagination and problem-solving skills. This can also create an excellent bond with your Skyscale that should be established early-on to prevent the youngling from running away as they reach adolescence. Playing Catch with your skyscale can teach a rider and dragon to coordinate. Hide-And-Seek lets a hatchling exercise their problem-solving and observational skills to become stealthier and a better hunter. Play Dead is a great way to introduce your hatchling to the concept of imaginative play. Obedience Training such as âSitâ and âStayâ teaches your hatchling manners. Be sure to give them plenty of scritches and make mealtimes fun by tossing the food to your skyscale from a distance. You can bond with your Skyscale by teaching them how to defend themselves by roaring or breathing fire at a target.
Grooming: Skyscales typically donât like to stay dirty, but luckily theyâre easy to clean. Get a bucket and rinse them down. Just like that!
Growth: Skyscales grow incredibly fast, reaching a youngling status within 12 weeks of routine care. A hatchling should be meeting the minimum requirement for each ascending weight class each week for the first twelve weeks since hatching.
Week 1: Pinweight (20 lbs.)
Week 2: Atomweight (25 lbs.)
Week 3: Strawweight (30 lbs.)
Week 4: Flyweight (35 lbs.)
Week 5: Batamweight (40 lbs.)
Week 6: Featherweight (45 lbs.)
Week 7: Lightweight (55 lbs.)
Week 8: Welterweight (75 lbs.)
Week 9: Middleweight (90 lbs.)
Week 10: Cruiserweight (110 lbs.)
Week 11: Heavyweight (130 lbs.)
Week 12: Fullweight (150 lbs.)
Notice the roughly exponential growth beginning around 7 weeks of age. This growth spurt is normal and expected, but results in increased horn growth which can be hard for the hatchling to adapt to. You may find your hatchling catching their horns on furniture more frequently around this time. They may also start trying to use them, so be patient and firm with any unwanted behavior!
Training, exploration, and other physical activity should be increased as your Skyscale grows from a Youngling into a rideable adult.Â
Saddle: While the Commanderâs saddle is built to last essentially forever, newer riders arenât so lucky as to have a saddle built from some of the rarest materials in Tyria. Skyscale saddles can still be built using sandpaper, Gossamer, Hardened Leather, an adhesive, Gossamer Thread, Orchichalcum or Mithril Rivets, and saddle oil, but it wonât last as long. Gorrik released his saddle design to leather workers so you can often find at least one commissionable saddle maker in each major city today. The saddle should fit comfortably and Skyscales have an innate rider-mount instinct so harnessing them should be easy, or even anticipated. Be warned; commissions are expensive! Once you have the saddle, you should get it checked at least every season. If youâre an active or daily rider who performs intense activity, I would personally suggest every five to ten weeks. Buckles can wear down over time which could result in a catastrophic fall. To remedy a possible emergency, trainers can teach their Skyscale how to maneuver to catch them mid-air. In the event of a fall, remain calm and command your dragon as if it were another training session. They can catch you on their back in the space between their spiny crests. It will be a hard fall, but not as hard as the ground!
Rift Repair: Kralkatorrik consumed part of the Mists, destabilizing reality. Aurene has been working to repair the Mists now that she is an Elder Dragon and connected to the All, but she could always use more help! Repairing rifts in your local area can even be a fun way to feed your Skyscale loose magic that needs to be cleaned up. Rifts can be identified as fluctuating coalescences that almost look like a hole or an error. Theyâre hard to look at directly due to their shifting appearance, but if you fly your Skyscale to it they should begin closing the rift. Once repair has begun, follow the trail of volatile energy until you find the other side of the rift. Repairing this line is comparable to stitching a tear in clothing shut. If left unchecked, the two sides of the rift could widen or tear, pulling everything between the two ends into the Mists or releasing Mist entities into Tyria. Your help is crucial!
Additional Notes: Skyscales have a weak point on the neck, just behind the jawline. The skin there is very soft and sensitive and Skyscales love it when you scratch them there. Utilize this well when raising your hatchling so they become more attached to you! Skyscales shed their scales semi-frequently throughout their entire lives. These scales are fire resistant and some riders have already fashioned armor from the sheddings of their mounts. Iâve met a few who keep their hatchlingâs baby scales or egg shell pieces in a jar, bottle, or sachet around their neck for good luck.
