Steve and Laura’s Bogus Journey

She tossed an apple to Steve as she came up to him.  She had taken some to help boost her blood sugar after she had to pump out a litre and a half of blood for Jubilee.  She was replenishing the volume of blood just fine, she just had to properly fuel it.  The fruit would add a quick sugar hit to the balanced breakfast she had forced herself to eat before she got ready for the journey.  Still, she looked a little pale in the face, .  

She looked up at the sky, she hadn’t really noticed the weather.  “I guess it could be worse,” she confirmed.  She wasn’t as lively as yesterday, she had been upbeat and personable when she led Steve and his people in.  She set her face in a look of determination, “Are you all ready to go?  The faster we get moving, the sooner we find them.”  There wasn’t a question of whether they would find them, of course.  It was when.

He caught the apple as easily as he caught the peaky look to Laura’s skin. He narrowed his gaze on her, trying not to crowd her but needing to know if she was definitely 100% for this mission. 

There was also something about her voice that was different. It was flatter somehow. Not as... fun... or energetic. There was something up and Steve didn’t want to set foot outside the compound before he knew what it was. 

“Yeah, I’m ready but just hold up a sec.” He paused with his hand on his pack, giving her another once over. “What’s going on?”

Laura’s hands shook a little as she packed the last of her things.  She understood logically that not much bad could really happen to her dad, even now.  They were a family that could survive a thermonuclear detonation.  Perhaps this irrational worry was a sign that she was becoming more ‘normal’; she didn’t dare to think it was instinct that something terrible might have actually happened.

She didn’t have a full image in her mind of the conversation she had with Ororo.  Her shock had turned into anger fairly quickly.  What do you mean, Steve is ready to go?  Why does he know before me?!  A reaction she, again, knew was irrational, as Steve Rogers was a leader and also a friend of Tony’s.  It made sense for him to have been informed of the situation before she was.  

It still felt as though a rug had been pulled out from under her.  It had been the most abrupt end to the lightness she had felt remembering her meeting with Peter on the roof she could have conceived of.

She took enough time to introduce Gabby to Bobby so that the young girl would have someone to go to if she needed anything.  Laura imagined that Gabby was as self sufficient as she had been at that age, but she wanted the young mutant to know that she had people in her corner.

She double checked the contents of her pack, and determined that she was ready to leave.  She headed down to the gates where she had been told to meet Steve.  It was just hitting mid morning as she approached the gatehouse.

Steve checked his pack and then checked it again. 

and again. 

and a fourth time before he was satisfied he was prepared. 

He knew he’d only just got back but he couldn’t turn this mission down. There was too much at stake. Not only were Logan and Tony friends, if either of them were killed... or worse... they could be in a lot more trouble than they were right now and he knew Laura needed someone there to keep her on track, even if she didn’t want it. 

He was prepared for hostility from her. Logan was her father after all so he understood. 

He was just checking his pack again when he saw her stalking toward him, the midmorning sun highlighting her dark locks. He shrugged his pack over his shoulder and looped his thumbs through the straps, hoping his stance was casual and welcoming. He knew he was supposed to take point on this but honestly he didn’t mind if she called the shots. 

He wanted this done quickly and efficiently with no problems along the way. He wanted to get in, find the guys, and get out. He cleared his throat. 

“Morning, nice day for a rescue mission don’t you think?” He glanced at the sky he could see, thanking all the gods - both his own God and the ones he’d recently met - that the weather was shaping up to be mild. 

Fighting zombies in the rain was never a fun day.

She arched her neck to offer more skin to his mouth, a heavy sigh breezed past her lips.  Was this a good idea?  She couldn’t say that for sure.  Did she want it?  More than anything she could think of right now.  

She caught his earlobe between her lips before she breathed, “Great idea or not, it’s what I want.”  She couldn’t promise that this would never cause a problem, but in all of this, seizing the day was important.  Her short fingernails brushed through his hair as she kissed his neck, she decided it was only fair for her to offer him an out too, “But if you don’t want to risk this being a bad idea.”

She pulled back enough to face him, “we can call this off now.  I won’t say I won’t be disappointed, but I don’t want to push you into something you don’t feel comfortable with.”  Her eyes found his, sincere but not without the lust he had ignited within her.  She knew that Steve’s thinking was far more progressive than people expected it to be, but was he modern enough to realise that her prior relationship with Clint was irrelevant to what was happening here.

The moment the words it’s what I want left her lips Steve stopped listening. He knew she said something else but he was too busy pulling her back to him so that he could kiss her again. 

All other thought left him as his hands skirted up and down her sides, brushing her soft skin and smooth muscles, testing the waters of what was allowed and now allowed - although he was pretty sure almost everything was on the cards right now. 

He brought his right hand up to tangle in her hair, deepening the kiss he so desperately craved. While Steve kept to himself he was a tactile creature by nature, liking the physicality of affection more than people would expect. 

And of course, he was but a man. Having a beautiful woman in his arms was really just his favorite thing.

She chuckled breathlessly and caught his bottom lip between her teeth, pulling gently before she kissed him again.  It was entirely possible that in the light of day this would seem like a terrible idea, but she was starved for contact and she could sense he needed this as much as she did.  

His beard scratched and tickled her face but his lips were soft, and she felt secure in his arms like she hadn’t in at least a year.  She pushed away her inhibitions as she stroked her hand over his chest.  The fingers of her other hand were still in his hair.  She couldn’t conjure a memory at this moment of feeling so exhilarated as this.

The feeling of her touching him was ecstasy and he pushed into her touch to feel even more. He closed his eyes as she tugged on his hair. 

“Bobbi...” He murmured, kissing her cheek, jaw and neck. “Is this... such a great idea?” He had to ask. It was in his moral fibre to make sure she was ok with this. He would kick himself if she thought about it and backed out but he needed to know.

Hell, he wasn’t even sure if he was fully on board. There were complications that this. They were team mates and Clint Barton was one of his closest friends. How would he feel if he knew Steve was here, kissing his ex-gal? He had to be sure and the only way to be sure was to hear Bobbi say it.

“Don’t worry, I know the value of it.  I did dabble in being a goddess as a teenager.”  She kept the same modest tone, but there was a little more mirth in her eyes this time.  Ororo Munroe had led an extraordinary life, she tried not to be dramatic about it.  The drama was saved for flying up into the sky and setting off lightning storms.

“I agree.  I think whoever goes in there must enter ready to destroy whatever they’re faced with.  Anything less will risk the lives of anyone who sets foot inside.”  She folded her arms as she thought of it.  “We have the people.  Even if it happens before Tony and Logan are back, we could find appropriate volunteers.”

“A goddess?” Steve choked with a laugh, catching her own humour in the process. “Well then, your grace? Or is it your godlyness?” He asked, tongue in cheek. It had been too long since he’d laughed properly. 

“Ah I’m sure we’ll get volunteers. Peter, Laura, hell even Bobbi Morse would all want a shot. I think it’d end up being therapy for us in a twisted kind of way.” He shrugged, knowing he would be there even if he was only stepping through the doors when the mission started. “Tony and Logan probably wouldn’t want to miss out on all the fun, if I’m totally honest.” he chuckled, shaking his head.

Knowing his own appetite Peter started building a massive sandwich for Steve.   Slicing up the bread and just adding to it.   “Try swinging around the city in spandex.   Honestly this place will be warmer if I’m not doing that.  Lost the suit in my travels.”  A brief tremor shook his hands as his mind shied away from the subject.  Instead it bounced back to the other topic.

“Uh, well, I actually did meet someone.   Just like not at that whole point, I mean like I said I just met her and we connected.”  Peter admitted, the faintest of color tinting his cheeks.   Thinking of Laura settled something inside him, leaving a warm feeling.   “Which just goes to show how crazy the world has really gotten.”

Peter settled the sandwich and a glass of the lemonade in front of Steve before turning back to the counter.  Might as well get a small snack of his own.   The habit of multiple small meals seemed to stick and probably did him a world of good to get torwards healthy eating habits. 

Steve noticed the tremor. He’d have had to be blind to miss it but he didn’t bring it to attention. If Peter wanted to tell him, he would. Instead he just said

“That’s a shame. I managed to keep mine only because I was wearing it when the world stopped.” He took the sandwich and bit into it, groaning softly at the taste. He’d lived on leftovers and stale rations for as long as he could remember. This real food was absolute gold and he told Peter as much. 

“So who’s the girl?” He asked, noting Peter’s tinted cheeks and half dazed look. “Anyone I know?”

“Yeah well something I’ve been thinking about off and on.  I  mean not with any real purpose but, you know,” Peter waved a hand in the air.  “General what the heck will happen in the future if I actually survive and find someone crazy enough that actually wants to have a family with me kind of way.”

Peter led them into the kitchen area.  “There is always some food somewhere.   What are you in the mood for my specialty generally is sandwiches.   There might be soup around here or some other food.  Fresh vegetables from the garden too.”  

Wandering towards the cabinet he started to pull out some plates and glasses.   “Also lemonade, pretty sure its from a mix but its pretty good.  We don’t have any fresh lemons.  Not unless we start trying to grow some trees indoors.  They wouldn’t survive outside in the winter here.”

“Look we live in a world of flesh eating zombies. You getting a girlfriend? Not such a crazy idea.” Steve shrugged as he sat at the bench and watched peter potter around the kitchen. 

The man was a bundle of energy and Steve found it infectious. He was glad to have found a friend so early. 

“A sandwich would be great actually. Anything will do.” He added, not really fussy on the insides. “I can imagine winters being awful around here.” He screwed up his nose. 

No matter how long he’d been off the ice for, the idea of cold weather still set him on edge.

She was glad that Steve did not need further information on that scale, it was good to see that he immediately respected Laura’s abilities.  People saw Logan and knew that he was dangerous, they were more inclined to underestimate Laura.

She still felt sorry that he was so tired and heading out again, but he had made his case for going.  

“Well, I only arrived in May, so as I understand it, that leaves a month between your departure and my arrival; there was a water shortage for a time, but I gave the clouds a bit of a prod to see what I could do about that, and in the end things worked out.”  That downplayed her contribution by a wide margin, but she didn’t feel the need to brag.  “In July, we went from being on track as far as expanding for our numbers, to woefully underprepared when thirty people arrived at once.  Officially speaking, we are now above capacity; there are still rooms free, but only because some families and close friends are sharing.  

“There are materials still being collected for the greater wall, in the meantime there will be a tunnel that connects this house to the one we have plans to fortify – the trouble is, something is drawing the infected to that house in unsettling numbers.  Surveillance drones have captured them entering and leaving the building.  It’s not the usual behaviour we see from the infected, and it’s difficult to get further information without getting inside.”

Steve took the information she was giving him and studied it. There was just so much to do and so little time to do it in. He was glad though that what they had for the moment was safe enough. 

“Don’t be humble. If you helped with the water shortage, be proud.” He smiled at her, sensing her hesitation. “Hell, it’s a lifesaving power you have there. Water is a precious commodity in this day and age.” 

He scrubbed a hand through his beard as he thought about the house and expansion. 

“One day soon we’re going to have to send people in there to check it out.” He reasoned. “It’ll be the only way we find out what’s happening but it can’t be civilians. Strictly powered people only. We’re more durable, less likely to go down in an attack.”

She made a shocked sound as she was pulled straight into his arms.  She hadn’t expected the kick to land, but the outcome of that was a surprise.  She didn’t mind the surprise.  She took in the way he looked this close to her, the shape of his jaw, the strength of his arms as they locked her against him.  One of her hands had come to rest on his chest, she let the other slide up the back of his neck and into his hair.

“What good is respectable, anyway?”  She wondered, and made a fist in the short hair at the back of his head.  When her lips met his, she kissed him fiercely, pressing herself against his body.

There was a brief second in time where Steve had no idea what the hell he was doing. There was also a brief second where he almost dropped Bobbi, just from sheer shock. 

But those were only two seconds and he had plenty more so he pulled her close and kissed her back. One of his hands trailed down her back and the other slid up into her hair. 

Her lips were soft and sweet, the kiss absolutely perfect, and he pulled away only to take a breath. 

“Yeah. Respectable is totally overrated.” He grinned, his chest feeling lighter for the first time in what felt like a hundred years.

“Oh my god, please do not tell me you are going to fuss over me eating too.”   Peter made an over exaggerated expression of dismay.   “Come on man I already have people fussing at me for that, you don’t need to join the crowd.”  He followed along with the tugs.   “Also I look a lot better than I did when I got here, so I’m gaining weight back.”

Peter waved a hand in the direction of the elevators when they passed them.  “I usually take those down to the labs.   Bobbi’s lab is down there. Sometimes I help her.  I also work in Tony’s space.   Have an area I can set up too.   Almost perfected producing my own lightweight armor.  Its both thinner then Kevlar and stronger at the same time, bite proof.” 

He waved his hand down the hall.  “Library, indoor playroom for some of the kids.   I know this because I occasionally babysit Gerry for Jess.   Takes a unique skill-set to watch a baby that can literally crawl up walls.”   Peter found that bit actually relaxing sometimes.  A different speed than working in one of the labs.  

“Crowd joined. Sorry, I don’t make the rules” Steve said simply, ignoring Peter’s protests. He was half sure they were exaggerated anyway. “I’m sure you do look better. Comes with having stability and safety.” 

He followed along with what Peter was saying, making a mental mind map of the place as they walked. He huffed a laugh at the mention of a Spider-Baby. 

“Things I didn’t think I’d need to think about, ever.” He murmured, more to himself than Peter. This whole world had been one surprise after another for him.
