"Andrew." You said, getting his attention. He looked up from the laundry he was folding to where you were standing at the edge of the living room. His eyes flickered from your face down to the gift bag in your hand and back up to your eyes.
"I have a gift for you." You said, giving him a smile, doing your best to contain your excitement. You didn't want to ruin the surprise. You walked over to the couch and sat down next to your boyfriend as he put the shirt he was holding into the laundry basket on the coffee table. He turned slightly towards you, his posture still perfectly straight. You passed him the gift bag as anticipation hummed through your veins.
"What's the occasion?" Andrew asked, his eyebrows furrowing skeptically at the bag. His birthday wasn't for a few months and it wasn't a holiday or anniversary, Andrew had no clue as to why you were giving him a gift. Or rather he was confused by the bag, you usually handed him whatever you bought him unwrapped because wrapping it up would be a waste of time.
"I saw it in a shop and thought it was perfect for you." You answered vaguely, smiling more when Andrews brow furrowed further. Without any more questions Andrew pulled the tissue paper out of the bag and lifted the soft, cotton shirt from it. He unfolded it, the words on the shirt facing him as he held it up, and you waited eagerly for him to connect the dots.
"What?" Andrew asked, his voice cracking slightly in disbelief. You couldn't see his face, the shirt was blocking your view, but you could tell the wheels in Andrews head were spinning furiously.
"I thought it would be a good piece to add to your wardrobe, since the statement applies to you." You said coyly, your voice clearly conveying your enthusiasm. Andrew dropped the shirt to his lap and he stared at you in shock.
"Worlds Greatest Dad?" Andrew asked in a small voice. You nodded and watched his eyes become wet with tears.
"Oh Andrew." You moved the gift bag to the floor and shifted across the couch until you were right next to him. He reached for you instantly, his hands resting gently on your waist. You cupped his face with both of your hands and rubbed your thumbs lovingly over his cheeks.
"Yes. There are some pregnancy tests on the bathroom counter if you want to see." Andrew's tearful eyes shifted from your face to the bathroom door down the hall. He stood, shirt clenched in his fist, and strode purposely towards the bathroom. You smiled to yourself as you now sat on the couch alone, your hands hovering in the air where Andrews face used to be a second ago. You knew him so well, you'd known he would want to see the tests.
You got up and followed him to the bathroom, leaning against the doorframe with your arms crossed as Andrew stared down at the three positive pregnancy tests on the counter. He turned his head to look at you, the tears still clinging to his eyes.
"You're keeping it?" He asked, his voice uncertain but also filled with hope.
"No, I thought I'd be an asshole and get you a Worlds Greatest Dad shirt for no reason. Yes! I'm keeping the baby!" You laughed, shaking your head at him. "I'm over the moon to be having a baby with you Andrew." Finally, the tears in Andrews eyes spilled over and fell down his face as a wet smile pulled at his lips. Your chest swelled with love for this beautiful, soft hearted man and he was in your arms in an instant. Andrew hugged you close, his arms banded securely across your shoulders as your arms went under his and around his back. Andrew craned his neck down to rest his head on your shoulder, his face turned away from you. He sniffled and you rubbed your hands soothingly over his back as you hugged him back as tightly as he hugged you.
"We need to go to the doctor." Andrew said out of nowhere and you huffed out a laugh. "You need some vitamins." That was your boyfriend, always taking care of you and thinking ahead.
"I have an appointment on Monday at 11. We can ask about prenatal vitamins then." Andrew pulled back to be able to press his forehead against yours, his hands moving to your hips. You both closed your eyes, breathing deeply. You let the safety and security of Andrew wash over you. Being in his hands was the best place to be.
"This baby is so lucky you're their daddy." You whispered. You opened your eyes to see Andrew looking down at you with those sad eyes of his, full of this bittersweet look like he couldn't believe this was his life and that he was worried it'd be taken from him. You pushed your face forward and kissed him softly, his hands flexing against your jeans as he kissed you back.
