Ori isn't very good at braiding his hair (he can write well, but he always fumbles when it comes to his hair). Dori insists on helping him for most of his childhood, until 57-year-old Ori swats his hands away and works hard to braid his own hair.

We didn’t say Ori couldn’t braid his own hair, we said he wasn’t very good, meaning it wasn’t perfect. Sometimes he gets it right while other times it’s a bit messy. I’m sure the other dwarves have their share of braiding hardships.

totally doesn’t make it sound like he’s two years old and challenged.

At age 57 he should have no problem braiding hair, due to it being so important in dwarven culture. You are both making it sound like braiding hair is some super difficult thing to do - it’s simple. Unless we are referring to the extremely elaborate braids that would naturally require a second pair of hands, or a lot of time. due to complexity (Nori’s hair or Dori’s, for example).

Ori’s is a bowl cut with 6 simple braids and ribbon’s braided in. Not that hard.

Feminine doesn't mean weak

I’m getting annoyed and very saddened by the fandom’s need to portray and headcanon, any male who’s feminine, as weak and helpless.

Just because a man likes certain things, dresses a certain way, acts a certain way and talks a certain way, doesn’t mean it effects other things like courage, fighting ability, or intelligence.

A man can sew little bears with smiles and have a room covered in pink and still be tough and nails. Just like the most macho looking dude can be the most cowardly and weak.

Ori is a scholar who also happens to dress and act a little bit more feminine than some of his other company mates - like Dwalin and Thorin. He, like Dori, likes purples and tea and has a posh voice. He likes drawing and languages and is very curious and childish.

And he’s also one of the scariest motherfuckers in battle, survives 2 wars (and is the last remaining in Moria), is very strong, and extremely intelligent.

Ori’s feminine side, does not hinder him in any way, and it does not define him. The idea of feminine men automatically being weak is also really insulting and gross as well.

Oh. and here’s a very small list (out of a very large one) of feminine male characters from media who also kick ass.

Why does doing something "Like a girl" have to be a insult anyway? It's possible to be a strong character of any personality arrangement.

So one day a dwarf is talking to a human and finally realizes that when humans say woman, they generally mean “person who is theoretically capable of childbirth” because for whatever reason, humans assign social expectations based genital differences. (What a fucked up culture, the dwarf thinks.) But hey, better communication! So the next time the dwarf introduces theirself, they say, oh, by the way, I am what you call a “woman.”

And the trade negotiations just stop. They just stop cold. The tall people insist on speaking to the man, they insist on talking to the lady dwarf about all sorts of irrelevant bullshit, like recipes and childrearing and perfume

so the dwarf goes back home, enraged

and is like “BTW guess what happened, we’re all just going to be men forever now as far as the tall ones are concerned”

and everyone is justly horrified at this barbarism but they all agree to do whatever  it takes to squeeze those tall bastards for all the resources they are worth

and the dwarves get surlier, and the trade agreements less generous

and the tall people are all “what a miserable and greedy race”

but really they’re just still nursing a grudge about how goddamn backwards and sexist the tall people are

because their best negotiator, one of their sacred cave people, got snubbed the instant she said she was capable of childbirth - and a mortal insult like that can never be forgiven

Just as an additional thought, we hear that women dwarves generally stay within the mountain and are a protected, guarded subset of the dwarves. There’s not many of them, so there’s an implication that women dwarves are too precious to be allowed out.

But what if this too is a mistranslation? What if the dwarves were talking to the Men and when asked “where are all your women?” they hit a wall. They whisper amongst themselves, and eventually come back with a question, “What’s a woman?” The Men are incredulous.

"Why, the members of your race that bear children, of course!" 

More dwarven whispering.

They reach the conclusion that Men mean dwarves who are currently pregnant. Well! Of course those dwarves are currently safe within the mountain, well cared for and generally loathe to travel until the child is born. The Men take this to mean that all dwarven women are discouraged from traveling, and that their primary purpose is childbearing. Dwarves find this a satisfactory outcome, especially with the way Men treat their women, and so even when the misunderstanding becomes clear to them they never correct it.

Rant time!

Do you guys remember that person who kept stealing my pictures? Well, they have stopped taking mine, but they are still taking other pictures without sourcing. If you don’t know which page I’m talking about, it is this one.

They have now blocked me. And why? Because they reposted this picture which I had recently added to my favourites on deviantart. So of course I recognised it. I then did what I have done with all my pictures they had stolen. I added a link to the original picture in the comments and said that it’s not ok to steal other people’s stuff on the internet!

Since they have blocked me, I cannot see their reply (I know they made one), but I got my boyfriend to send it to me. This is what they said:

Bullshit!!! This image is still accessible? How can it be stolen. What a nonsense. A strange way of thinking. Is the picture on the internet… not to be seen?? Again, this is the biggest bullshit I´ve ever heard!!!

Now, I obviously cannot reply to them, but I hope some of my followers would be kind enough to do so.

You see, it is (usually) ok to share other people’s work on the internet , as long as you credit them. Medieval Archery does not credit. They edit out watermarks and edit the colour slightly. The pictures they post are usually crappier than the original versions. I would not have had any problems with them if they shared and credited, but just stealing and claiming it as their own… Not ok!

My endless battle against the reposters…. Why do I even bother?

The original poster of the picture should say something if it bothers them. If you've said something to them in the past and they haven't removed it you're very well within your rights according to Facebook TOS to report it.

I just saw your answer and since you mention Thranduil in Doriath, do we have any indication about his involvement and location during the imprisonment of Luthien and the sack of Doriath, or when the dwarves killed Thingol to get the Nauglamir back?

Lore questions, I love lore questions, they give me an excuse to stay up and drink caffeine, do dee doo~.

Most of what we have about Thranduil in Doriath is fan speculation. (I do loads of it here.)

From canon we know that he was probably born some time before Doriath’s fall and when building his halls there was  ”no doubt Thranduil his [Oropher’s] son was following the example of King Thingol long before, in Doriath; though his halls were not to be compared with Menegroth…” (SPotSE)

He followed Thingol’s example in architecture alone, it seems. He has marched with Noldor and Mirkwood is the Forest of Misfit Toys. It is also one of the only places where Silvan linguistic notes are recorded. (Appendix B,The Silvan Elves and Their Speech) He also does not employ any sort of Girdle defence or magic jewelry. I believe this very much shows that he learned from the xenophobic failings of Doriath. :)

We also know that he was in the company of Elves that fled toward Lindon after Doriath’s destruction. (LotR Appendix B) A passage from Unfinished Tales conflicts with this, having Oropher found their realm.

Elvish Cross-Cultural Relations Part 1/4: The Avari

Someone asked me to explain how the different elvish groups get along (or don’t.) Anon, I’m sorry, this is probably not what you were hoping for - my brain took words like “generally” and “clarify” and turned them into “very thorough” and “in excruciating detail.” Because, honestly, this is a topic that I really really love.

Anyway, this is the first of four parts (the other three being Vanyar, Noldor, and Teleri.) When they’re all done, I’ll probably post the whole thing as a downloadable pdf/ibook like I did with the Silmarillion Reader’s Guide. So, anyway, stay tuned for the rest!
