Posted! Took a little longer than I expected. I had some formatting issues. If you read it and find a spot where it seems like a line is missing, let me know.

I was going to say some stuff about it, but I'm tired, lol. I like writing, but I also like not having a writing project. So I think I'm just going to drop it like a hot plate and run away. 😂

Overall, I'm happy with it. I tried some new things with this one, and for the most part I think they paid off. I'm super picky with whump--I want it to be plausible and realistic, not gratuitous. So this one's definitely not hardcore whump, but I think it's a good balance of whump & story.

I do want to note that Mark's protectee, Charlie, is fifteen, but I don't consider this minor whump. Charlie is in peril, and he's unavoidably traumatized by some of what happens, but it's not his story. It's firmly centered on Mark's POV. That's what makes the difference, in my opinion.

Heads up to my three loyal fans...I'm planning to get False Horizon up on Ao3 this coming weekend! I've got a real actual almost-final draft here. I started this project exactly one year ago, with my post on (checks notes) the novel I would never write. 😅 It wound up being a novella. I learned how to use Scrivener, which I absolutely LOVE. It lets me bounce back and forth between scenes--super helpful for writing with ADHD, lol.

And friends, did you know you can get Scrivener to do things like focus on adverbs? Or verbs, or prepositions--about eight choices, including focusing on just the dialogue. SO helpful. It grays out all the text that's not your current focus.

And there's the word count, which you can see by days, months, or both. The "Draft" column is the actual story. "Other" is notes, like character & location notes.

Here's my word count by month:

I had a lot in March 2025 because I was shifting things from text documents to Scrivener. I'm amused that my January total is precisely 3. January has positive and negative days, but they offset each other almost perfectly. The current, almost-final draft stands at 49,778 words.

like i'm sorry but we as a fandom have to stay firm on our anti-AI values. we cannot suddenly start giving AI a pass when it's something we "want to see" like destiel kisses. it's not suddenly fine. we're not going to start using AI to make fanfic scenes come to life or audio AI to make characters "say" stuff we want to hear. you have GOT to be firm on your anti-AI stance. if you start making exceptions then suddenly anything will fly. fandom is for real art and creations made by real people. no AI fanfics. no AI art. no AI rendered "bonus" scenes. no AI audio. none of it has a place here.

I remember some drawn out captivity in soap operas from the 90s. I think Erica Kane was held in a pit once on AMC. 80s and 90s was more the era for that. I miss those old soaps. They're just not the same today. I don't see a lot on tv anymore. But maybe someone else has more recs?

There were a couple of GREAT whump storylines in 80s General Hospital, as well. Grant Putnam kept Anna DeVane prisoner in his basement for a while, sending pics of her captivity to her current and ex husbands, who were both in love with her and trying to find her. Gooooood stuff. I remember there was also a plotline that ended with Robert Scorpio's then-girlfriend being abducted and tied up and put inside a sarcophagus in a museum exhibit (or something similar) that was set on fire... Thank goodness for old school soap operas and their ridiculously convoluted and creative whump plots XD

Just wish they'd whumped more hot dudes... but back in the day, we often had to settle for ladywhump that we'd use as imagination fodder for our male-whumpee fantasies... XD

So, I'm reading a book series called Beautiful Monsters by Jex Lane. It's got vampires and incubi in it. Anyway, I finished the first book in 2 days. It was hard to put down. I just started book 2, and I feel so bad for Mathew, the lead character. He was abandoned by his parents, abandoned by his vampire sire, and held captive by people he thinks accept him. I have so many feels for this series so far. I highly recommend. It's got whump, captivity, battle-style action, romance, fighting, sex, and more!

Hi Nonny! Sorry, I didn't see a notification for this ask until now. I read A LOT of dark romance books with the "Stockholm syndrome" trope, so I have lots of recs for that, but most people I've spoken to don't seem to enjoy the dark romance genre.

I've reblogged a lot of captivity whump scenes over the years. As for tv shows, mostly you'll get a single episode devoted to captivity whump/rescue over several years. The most recent that comes to mind is Jamie's imprisonment in Outlander season 1, episodes 15 and 16. It's quite gruesome though, and definitely not for everyone as it involves some heavy whump and SA.
