Toro Rosso will benefit from driver experience
February 4 2017
As Formula 1 heralds a new era in 2017, James Key reckons Toro Rosso will benefit from having two drivers with experience in Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat.
Whereas Toro Rosso have spent many years fielding rookie racers, this season both drivers have three or more years experience racing in Formula 1.
And with new aerodynamic regulations coming into play, technical director Key says that is a bonus for Toro Rosso.
Key told RACER: “I think it is.
“When Max Verstappen and Carlos came onto the scene in 2015 they were both clearly great young drivers and it was a very positive story for us and for the sport in general, really. They did such a good job in their first year but they were still learning, they still had to go through the process of refining what they were doing to get the tyres to work in all circumstances.
“There were the inevitable rookie mistakes; they were going to learn tracks they had never been to before, and that always takes away a little bit of performance potential compared to teams that don’t have to go through that – they can just concentrate on the job in hand every race weekend. So we had a little bit of that to deal with in 2015.
“In 2016 we swapped drivers and Danny needed a little bit of time to reset himself. I think by the end of the season he had definitely done that and we rate him very highly. Despite the fact that he had a tricky mid-season, we do rate him very highly, I think he will be absolutely back to his best this year because he’s had time to step back and move on from some of the things that affected him last year.
“Carlos we know has got great potential too and wants to do well. It’s an important year for them of course, they will need to show that they’re still capable of being competitive in a driver market that is quite competitive now for younger guys and give themselves opportunities later on as well.”
Key believes the experience that Sainz and Kvyat have will give Toro Rosso greater scope to develop their car as the season progresses.
He added: “For us we’re happy with having a known driver pair, we’re happy having guys we know but importantly it’s the most experienced driver line-up I think the team will have had. They will go into the season allowing us to go and develop our 2017 car with their known and understood feedback, so that will be good.”
Toro Rosso to launch on eve of testing
06 Feb 2017
Toro Rosso have announced that their 2017 car will be unveiled to the world in the Barcelona pit lane on Sunday February 26, the day before pre-season testing begins at the Spanish Circuit.
The covers will come off the Renault-powered STR12 at 4.30 pm at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with drivers Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat in attendance.
Also present will be team principal Franz Tost, technical director James Key and deputy technical director Ben Waterhouse.
Toro Rosso finished seventh in the 2016 constructors’ championship using 2015-spec Ferrari power units.
Sainz: "People forget that Kvyat beat Ricciardo on 2015"
2017-01-30 Jose Carlos de Celis Motorsport Spain
Carlos Sainz defends his Toro Rosso team-mate , who he comfortably beat in the 2016 season. "I know he's a very fast driver," says regarding Kvyat.
In the 2016 season, Carlos Sainz finished with 46 points, 21 more than the other Toro Rosso driver, Daniil Kvyat, who had 25. However, the Russian had raced the first four GPs with Red Bull, which allowed him to accumulate 21 Points (in that first part of the championship, the Spaniard had only four).
Therefore, and since Kvyat was replaced by Verstappen, Sainz added 42 points in the 16 GPs in which they shared a team, whereas Daniil only won four more.
In the comparison between teammates, Alonso and Sainz were the most dominant drivers in 2016, although in the case of the younger there are those who point to the poor performance of Kvyat as the main cause of the great differences between the two drivers of the same team.
He's been upset with that version, and has always argued that Kvyat, who already made a good impression in his first year in Formula 1 and his first season at Red Bull, has not forgotten how to drive .
Speaking to Motorsport.com Spain he returned to address the issue, and recalled that Ricciardo, considered one of the best drivers of the current grid, was already defeated by Kvyat.
"He is a driver who beat Ricciardo in 2015 and people seem to forget it very quickly," he answered to the question of whether Kvyat could have been affected by being downgraded to Toro Rosso in the middle of the year.
"I saw, from the first race in which he got into the car, the Kvyat that I saw when he won the GP3; if it could affect him, I do not know. I know he is a vert fast driver, specially on classification. He’s aggressive on race and that's what I have to face in 2017 ".
"In the end, if it hurt you or didn’t... we are F1 drivers, we recover quite quickly from those setbacks," he concluded. Both of them have a lot at stake this season, and Carlos knows that beating his neighbor box is the first goal.
Carlos Sainz: "The words of Hembery built negativity in a moment of fresh air"
The Spanish driver answered the questions that media had during an event of presentation of sunglasses.
By Sergio Martínez for CarAndDriverTheF1.com.
Carlos Sainz is centered in 2017. The Spanish driver is on the last stages of his preparation for the next season completing the steps that this winter as required, with many time on the GYM and the objective to find muscle for the new cars. Besides this, the youngster most attend to his obligations with sponsors, the same with the press, specially the microphones of Cope GP.
Sainz show himself motivated for the upcoming season, yet he doesn’t want to build false hopes with his objectives: “To speak of a first podium is an utopia this early on the season. To have a good first third of the season is important, but so is having a good second third. Then a final third. This world functions like this. But yeah, my objective is to have a good first half then analyse during the summer where are we standing. To fight with McLaren would be too much to ask, specially because they have millions we don’t. Our objective most be to be behind the big 4 and try our best. Hopefully Toro Rosso will managed that and I have a good year too, even better than last years”, he confessed.
Sainz was asked his opinion regarding the words of the Motorsport Director of Pirelli, who said that the new rules and tyres that were requested meant less overtaking. “I don’t think they will be less overtakes, I think Hambery is covering himself. To say that when no one has tried the cars, even if you have a theory, you can’t create negativity now that there’s a fresh air on Formula 1. To say that is useless. In the end, you are hurting yourself. I hope drivers get a car that we can feel more, and we can transfer that to the fans. I think that’s the objective of the new Formula 1″.
Carlos is not trusting that Fernando Alonso would leave Formula 1 in the near future, even when the Spaniard has said that he would if the cars don’t mean a challenge anymore; “I think Fernando like Formula 1 a lot more that you think and it would be hard to make him retire. I am sure he’s going to like the new cars,” assured the Toro Rosso driver.

Sainz: "Carlos has talent and attitude to become World Champion"
Carlos Sainz Sr and Carlos Sainz Jr sit down with Manu Carreño, De la Rosa and Ponseti in a very special show
A World Champion and an aspirant to be so. Two motor lovers. Two 'crazy' four-wheelers. Carlos Sainz and Carlos Sainz. Father and son. This Thursday, El Larguero has moved to Carlos Sainz Center in Las Rozas, the karting center that Carlos Sainz has been managing for several years.
At a table, father and son sit with Manu Carreño, the former driver Pedro Martínez de la Rosa, and the voice of SER, José Antonio Ponseti. In it are the the experience of a double WRC Champion, Carlos Sainz, and the illusion and the desire of a Formula 1 driver.
"I’d like to think that my son will someday be World Champion," says Carlos Sainz. He dreams that his son will achieve his great goal. "He has the talent and the attitude to be champion" but the father warns: "to be champion of anything is very difficult, to be lucky, to be in the right moment ...".
Carlos Sainz Jr., who faces his third season in Formula 1 picks up the glove. "You know that until I don’t get it or I’m in a position to fight for a world championship, I will not stop aiming for that."
Precisely that, the desire to be world champion, is what Pedro Martínez de la Rosa praised the most on him, the passion of Carlos Sainz Jr. comes from birth and that is the most important thing.
The offers received and the future of Carlos in Formula 1
When asked if he had offers the answer has been very clear: "Yes, why are we going to lie. There was a clear and very attractive option that was the one of Renault that arrived in June. The offer was considered and in the end was left aside because it was still very early in the year and we had to see what happened in 2017 and because Red Bull was not keen to let me go. I thought about it with my team, my father and company and we said that no matter how attractive it was, we had to be patient," he said in the microphones of El Larguero.
I spoke with Merecedes but there was no offer, I think Mercedes was very clear from the outset. I think they were thinking about it but there was no offer nor possibility to go to Mercedes.

From seeing him in the TV to wanting “pass over him”
Carlos Sainz explains to ‘El Larguero’ how has his relationship with Fernando Alonso changed
The relationship with Carlos Sainz Jr and Fernando Alonso has passed by multiple phases. The Toro Rosso driver, has explained how has evolved the relationship between both Spanish Formula 1 drivers.
Everything started in 2004, when Fernando Alonso was on his way to win his frst World Championship. Sainz Jr. met Fernando Alonso one day and that day decided that he wanted to be a Formula 1 driver. "When I turned ten, I met Fernando Alonso and like not wanting to say it I tell my father that I want to be F1 World Champion, I want to be like Fernando Alonso," said the younger Sainz.
From there on Carlos Sainz began to work to achieve his dream. A dream that has taken him from seeing Fernando Alonso on TV to compete shoulder to shoulder with his idol.
How do you do that? How do you manage it? Carlos Sainz responds with total sincerity: "It is one of the things that I haven’t stopped to think about it this year, when you are racing you do not realize that it is him, if I think about it I wouldn’t go strong" he admitted to El Larguero.
He explained later that he obviously knows that he is driving alongside a McLaren and that he knows that it is Fernando Alonso "but my head does not assimilate it, for me it is a McLaren that I must pass," he said with laugh. Finally, he joked that when he had a contact with Fernando Alonso, he joked saying "I'm sorry, dude or an Ah, it was you?!".
