{spoilers} it still is ooc but this art became heavier for me. we cant tell what carol thinks and what exactly she wishes to achieve, so please dont think i endorse her (might as well be speculative) actions; at the very least she doesnt seem to me a good mayor. i suppose she loses her whole family in the weird route (while it was already falling apart), so now i can only feel grief for what hoildays have gone through

Hi, I’m currently writing “The Space Behind Your Eyes” on Ao3, a Susie-centric, Post-Snowgrave Chapter 5 continuation of canon. Susie finds Noelle’s and Kris’ bodies in the lake, but an investigative team from out of town claim it was a murder-suicide, with Kris being the perpetrator. Susie’s goal is to prove them wrong and convince them to continue investigating the case, until the truth comes to light—all while battling her own grief, and exploring the different ways this loss affects the people around her.
So why am I posting again, you may ask? I wanted to talk about some of the little details I haven’t seen pointed out yet! Only two chapters have released as of today, but I’m really dedicated to crafting not only a good fanwork, but a good story as well.
1. Susie and Toriel are two sides of the same coin
Toriel admits to not wanting to tell Asriel of the tragedy over the phone, which Susie finds selfish, leading to this line:
“In her opinion, that was cruel, keeping him in the dark like that. But who was she to tell Toriel how to grieve?”
However, Susie similarly is afraid of breaking the news to Ralsei. Susie is literally keeping Ralsei “in the dark” because she knows they won’t accidentally be exposed to the truth, due to the fact that they’re stuck in the Dark World.
2. Tea flavor profiles as a metaphor for characters
In chapter 2, Toriel makes apple cinnamon tea. Susie describes the flavor as “sweeter than she was expecting; most of the apple notes were more understated, carving out space for the sugar-spice of the cinnamon.”
The apple represents Kris, and the cinnamon represents Toriel. Before the events of Deltarune, Susie was closer to Toriel, having eaten with her at the diner and even referenced her as Susie’s reason for leaving Kris alone when she was bullying them. However, Kris ultimately became the basis for Susie’s development, and I believe a significant part of why Toriel felt driven to treat Susie that day as well (she was Toriel’s child’s classmate, who struggled to make friends just like Kris, and likely didn’t have a loving mother to go home to).
Tea also has to steep in water to gain its flavor. Kris, having drowned alongside Noelle, is now bringing out new flavors in Hometown’s residents via their grief…and Susie is learning more about them due to her investigation.
3. Eyes as a window to the soul
This is a far more metaphorical one, but eyes are a common theme within my writing, but especially this fic. It even has the term “eyes” within the title! I often use characters’ eyes to convey their emotions, but the SOUL in Deltarune is a significant part of the lore. I can’t say much more than that about my fic specifically, because I’d hate to spoil my plans, but you know what they say…eyes are the window to the soul.
4. Lots and lots of foreshadowing
I cannot wait until more chapters are published, so I can go in depth into all the segments that were foreshadowing, and not just metaphors. I’m really trying to interlace it into the prose this time, not just the plot itself, to try to replicate that feeling of Deltarune’s metanarrative inching its way through the screen and into real life. This doesn’t really tell us anything we didn’t already know, namely that Rudy acts as a mediator between Carol and Noelle and cuts down Carol’s harshness but what I think is interesting is Carol bought it up to Rudy meaning a) she’s not completely avoiding him b) she does legitimately seek out his input, possibly to validate her own opinions or because she expects him to calm her down but they’re relationship isn’t dead/non-communicative
