Campaign 1 Episode 20: Trial of the Take, Part 3

It's still one of my favorite moments, I wish they kept it in the series 🤣

Season 3 was the best season for Perc'ahlia and Vaxleth fans which makes it my favourite season.

There's wholesome ships and there's toxic ships, but I'd like to coin 'sodium chloride ships', where the individuals involved are both horrible and dangerous people, but somehow being together renders them surprisingly well-adjusted (if a little salty).

The opposite of this is a 'coke and mentos' dynamic, where the two people are generally chill and likeable but being around each other makes them both wild and chaotic.

fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism

adult women aren’t inherently creepy for being in fandom and having hobbies apart from raising babies and doing taxes

the vast majority of people pushing back against the worrying trend of instigating harassment over fictional characters and relationships aren’t incest supporters or pedophiles, actually

liking a m/f ship doesn’t make someone a dirty heterosexual invading your space

preferring gay ships doesn’t make you ‘’woke’’ and good

no one owes you a disclaimer that they are a good person who recognizes that their favorite fictional villain’s actions are evil and that they don’t condone those actions irl

liking a fictional villain is in no way comparable to advocating abuse/murder/genocide/etc and you’re a fucking idiot if you believe that

just because a woman is attracted to a fictional villain doesn’t mean she’s promoting toxic relationships or going to end up in a toxic relationship. assuming women can’t tell fiction and reality apart stinks of internalized misogyny 

some rando’s a/b/o fanfics have none of the level of influence that popular tv shows and movies spreading propaganda have

no one owes you a detailed description of their traumas and mental health problems

abusive relationships are not the same as enemies to lovers ships

y’all need to chill the fuck out over people, relationships, actions and events that don’t actually exist and learn how to enjoy and discuss them like normal people

fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism

People aren’t “annoying” for talking about the problems with a piece of media. Engaging critically and considering how the media affects the world in which it exists is part of loving media and community.

People aren’t “ruining your fun” if they let you know an author is up to evil stuff in the real world.

Communities can have conflicts but if you are turning things as inherently benign as disagreements about ships or a girl liking a fantasy villain into drama you’ve lost the plot.

On that note, it’s good practice to adjust for the way the internet makes your brain romanticize other people as either pure evil or total angels. My way of doing this is trying to imagine what my actions would look like in a public offline setting. For instance, if you were sitting down for a coffee with your fandom would you start threatening one of the members over a ship?

I've been a part of multiple fandoms for almost 15 years by now, I wrote my bachelor thesis on fanfiction and I'm professionally interested in fan culture for 7 years or so. Let me add my two pennies:

Fandoms were and still are spaces created by adults, for adults. You are not responsible for unattended children who consume your content, especially if it's properly tagged and marked.

Fanfiction isn't inherently a "lesser" form of art. Some fanfics can put to shame many professionally published books.

Fictional characters aren't worth hurting real people. Just because an artist's drawn a character with a different skin tone or body shape, it doesn't mean they're racist/transphobic/fatphobic and they don't deserve to be bullied.
