caroline was born into a home where her mother left before she was one and a father she was scared to disappoint. she was the youngest child in the davis family and their only daughter. shy by all meanings of the word and never one to step too far out of her comfort zone. caroline was a bit of a wallflower her whole childhood. finding it easier to stand back and observe than to involve herself too much. quiet in every sense but always a caretaker. she would constantly feel the need to make sure things at home were taken care of or that everything was perfect in school that way her father had no reason to complain. part of her knew it was due to her fear he would abandon her just as her mother did. so caroline made sure there was no room for imperfection in her life. 

being the younger sister to weston came with it’s ups and downs. she loved and adored her brother. where she was afraid to make messes or be too much her brother showed no fear. he was like a tornado in her calm. always crushing into her room and making a mess of her quiet. he brought out the best in her, made her laugh, and protected her. he made her feel safe. even if he was threatening every guy she’d ever try to talk to when they were younger. it was funny but she sometimes thought he could be too much. 

once he graduated and went to college things quickly changed.. their father married again and brought their step mother into their lives. while weston could run off and be free from the burden caroline had three more years to deal before she went to college. when she graduated high school she went to the university of texas and began studying nursing. that’s where she met her future husband, michael, and fell in love quickly. they had a whirlwind romance and were married by the time she was twenty. her family didn’t really approve but she was doing everything she could to get out of their home and make her own life.  

she and michael loved one another dearly. they had a good life. she graduated college with honors and then they had their daughter, loralei, and everything seemed perfect. they lived the perfect life in dallas. they had a beautiful home in a perfect neighborhood, friends they saw often, and a daughter who went to the best schools. but, things were sour between the two. maybe its because they married young and quickly. they hadn’t gotten the chance to really get to know one another... and settled for divorce. 

caroline’s perfect plan didn’t feel perfect anymore. she was thirty-three and running to roswell, new mexico to start a new chapter in her life. but that was two years ago now and things have settled in... except for the romance part. her career is great. she’s working at roswell community medical as an emergency room nurse. her daughter is doing great and going to a great school. she has a nice home of her own.. but, she get’s lonely sometimes.. who knows what will happen next for the woman. the opportunities are endless.

she writes plays in her free time. it’s something she’s done since she was younger. she wanted so badly to be a broadway star as a child but it was clear that maybe that wasn’t in her cards.. so, she settled for writing plays and songs. 

caroline can sing. not many people know this outside of her family and ex husband. she enjoys singing and can sing really well. she sings her daughter a lullaby every night and will until loralei says she’s too old. 

her daughter is her whole world. loralei is first and foremost in caroline’s life. she will stop on a dime if her daughter needs her and does not care what anyone says.  

a philosophical drunk. much like her brother when she gets drunk she tends to ramble on life and it’s shortcomings.

was in a sorority in college. she was apart of alpha chi omega in college. she was shy but she knew her parents would want her to be in a sorority and make friends. it wasn’t as bad as she thought but it was definitely an experience.

her best friend (0/1): someone she has connected with when she moved here and they have been the best of friends since. it’s hard for caroline to make friends but her and this muse connected so quickly and so well it was hard for her to believe at first. she trusts them with everything. 

co-workers (0/5): caroline works as a nurse at roswell community health. their relationships can be good or bad. but, i think it could be interesting for her to have work friends or enemies. 

drinking buddy (0/1): someone she calls when she is stressed from life and knows they won’t mind her drunk ramblings on life.. but also someone who will take her out when she is so stressed she refuses to call or leave the house. this person can get her out of her shell. 

friends with benefits (0/1): the other person she calls when she’s stressed out. this connection i imagine she met either trying to go on a date or out at a bar when she first got to town. this is someone who she enjoys their time together but they agreed that dating probably wasn’t in their cards. they’re very casual and flirty together but you wouldn’t really know that they’re friends with benefits as an outsider.

past dates (0/3): caroline has been on four separate dates since moving to roswell... and they weren’t all bad but she’s just scared to commit right now. 

the babysitter (0/1): caroline isn’t very trusting with who watches her daughter so it would have to be the same person every time. someone who she would absolutely trust with loralei.

8: What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

maybe transcendence, it's hard to pick because i feel like they're all important. but, i feel like you can find some qualities of transcendence in humanity.

21: Where would you most like to live?

italy. i want to eat pray love my life away in italy. just run away to a village and fall in love and eat to my hearts desire.

33: What is your greatest regret?

in all honestly, i don't have many. i've had a really great life. the first thing i thought of was 'getting married before i knew who i was' but, i don't think i even know who i am now. and it would've meant i wouldn't have my daughter and i don't regret her for one second. so, that won't do... truthfully i try to live life without regret. just try your hardest that's all you can do.

“ oh , we’re gonna be dealing with the same problem — jacie’s already a little mini-me . you got any tips for a newbie ?? “ he collected up little tidbits as much as he could ; there were only certain things baby books and online forums could teach you about parenting , more often than not omitting the nitty-gritty details parents would find out the hard way . none of the bare truths , though , would have pushed jaden to trade in his status as a father ; it was his favorite job yet . ” well , i think you’re brother’s pretty neat , so it can’t be that bad . what’s your daughter’s name ?? “

“tips?” caroline asked, thinking for a moment. “no one knows your child better than you do.” that was her best tip. “you’re the one who is with them most, their caretaker, the one who listens to them all the time. you know them best. so, even though you go to these conferences and listen to a mile long list of all the things you’re doing wrong as a parent you know what’s best for your kiddo.” caroline said with a confident nod. it was the best advice she could give in the moment and really needed to listen to for herself. “neat isn’t the word i would use for wes.. but i can see how someone would think so.” she let out a small laugh. “her name is lorelai. i was a big gilmore girls fan when i was younger.”

Jurriaan grinned. “You skipped it, didn’t you? Good on you, honestly, if I had a kid, I probably would too, unless if everyone wanted to dote on my kid and call them a true gem, which I guess… very small chance with how terrible I was as a kid.” He stared at her. “Is your kid a terror too, then?”

“that’s exactly why i’m not going. my little one is a talker. makes great grades and does all her classwork but she loves to talk.” caroline explained, “maybe not a terror but a distraction has been the most common term in previous meetings.” she sighed, “i’ll just cross my fingers for you that one day your kid won’t be too much of a trouble maker for you.”

“That too, then,” mused Rhys lightly, laughter escaping him. She made a good point. In that moment it did seem very them. But then, he was always happy to be in good company, like Caroline’s. “You’re being too kind, I know that Elena’s mum would argue with you until the cows come home.” A phrase his own mum said a lot that he was forever using. “She’s sixteen now. A complete nightmare.” He shouldn’t talk about her like this, but sadly it was true, teen rebellion knew no bounds. “And she was… still is.”

it was nice to be talking with a parent who shared the same sentiments towards these types of things. caroline often felt like she was an outlier in the community of parents. new to town and shut out of the pta because she brought store bought cookies to the bake sale her first year here. so, having someone that agreed that parenting isn’t exactly a cake walk was refreshing. “well, i think all moms think dads could do better and most dads think the same.” she said with a small shrug, “i’m sure my ex thinks i could do better most days. but, it’s what it is. at least we’re both trying right?” which was true all they could do was try. “sixteen? goodness. i don’t know what i’ll do when lorelai is sixteen. she’ll probably give me a heart attack before then.” she let out a laugh, “i mean- not to be dramatic but you know how teenage girls are. and mine already has an attitude.. i can’t only imagine how she’ll be in a few years.”

                     “hey,  totally  no  judgement  here.  i’m  technically  supposed  to  be  heading  to  work  now  but,  uh,”  she  nods  to  the  coveted  iced  coffee  clutched  in  her  hand,  a  necessity  above  all  else,  “emergencies  happen,  even  if  the  emergency  in  question  is  just  the  fact  that  i’m  sleepy.  besides,  i’m  pretty  sure  i’d  rather  saw  my  arm  off  than  endure  any  parent  teacher  conference.”  another  reason  she’s  always  been  grateful  she  never  had  kids,  though  that  pile  had  morphed  into  a  mountain  at  this  point.  “so,  what’s  the  plan  for  your  free  afternoon  now,  you  big  liar?”

“well now i don’t feel so bad.” caroline said with a light laugh. “but no judgement because i can’t say i haven’t been late to a shift because i was trying to down a cup off coffee in the parking lot before going into work.” she admitted. sometimes you just need that extra boost of caffeine to get you through the day. “as much as i love my arm i think i have to agree with you. they’re the worst. and its the same crap every single time.” caroline groaned. she despised them. being a parent sometimes was the worst and not because of your kids but because of their teachers. “well, this big liar doesn’t have any plans really... i might go shopping for a bit. see what i can find. and are you actually gonna go into work are you gonna play hooky?”

“You’ve summed me up well.” Laughter escaped him and Rhys shrugged his shoulders very casually, a smile crossing his features as she continued on. He didn’t know if he’d ever really be the parent who showed up to everything, but then, he only had a couple of years left to actually try and up his game. “You have one of those? They wouldn’t even consider coming near me with one. Never been so honoured.”

“us up.” caroline quickly corrected with a wink. she knew that it wasn’t true. sometimes people just expect too much of parents. and she was new to this single parent thing. it had only been two years and she felt like she would never actually figure it out anyways. caroline smiled over and gave a laugh, “oh please, i’m sure you have a card laying around somewhere. maybe it got lost in the mail.” she knew that most parents were doing what they could.. not all but most and rhys never seemed like the type to be a bad parent. he was a great pediatrician after all. lorelai liked her visits and she never liked going to the doctor back home. “how old is your kid anyways? i wanna know if everyone’s ten year old is as chatty as mine.”

“of course not, what comes out of my mouth after i open it is everyone else’s problem, not mine.” his lips twitch with the effort he’s putting in to holding in his laughter - he’d been saying the exact same thing for years, so it’s not like it’s a surprise, but he liked to think that everyone else found it as amusing as he did… even if they actually didn’t. “come on, bug loves me, i bet we’d have a grand old time. plus, i wouldn’t say anything bad in front of her - i’m marginally more responsible than that.”

the redhead’s eyes rolled at his words. something she’s heard since they were at least teenagers. but, wes was partially right. he made sure it was everyone’s problem but his own. and it used to cause bickering between the two in their younger years. now caroline just accepted him for who he was. not that either of them would change. they were both too stubborn for that. "i’m not doubting her love for you. she reminds me every single day you’re her favorite.” she said with a sigh, it was true lorelai loved her uncle wes much more. “i’m not calling you irresponsible.. i just know my child would be listening through the door. she’s nosy. and repeats everything.” caroline said with another sigh, “sometimes i wonder if she’s mine. she acts so much like her father it’s not even funny.”

Rhys had caught the tail end of the conversation, heading toward the supermarket, wanting to get a couple of things in for dinner. A smile had appeared on his face, unable to help the reaction —- it all sounded very, very familiar. It was the type of thing that happened to him constantly, that made his role as ‘dad’ questionable to everyone else around him. “Only if you keep it quiet I didn’t turn up to last one either,” he challenged her lightly, a laugh escaping.

caroline nodded with a small laugh, “well aren’t we just a couple of bad eggs.” she was glad she wasn’t the only parent who despised these meetings enough just not to go. it was a waste of time in her opinion. her daughter wasn’t a bad kid and it always ended with her feeling like a bad mom. no one wants to hear their kid is being disruptive. “you know if we keep this act up they’ll take our parent of the year cards away.”

              his attention was grabbed by the   oh no   exclamation,  making it harder to tune out when he realized the conversation wasn’t for him.      “  tell me about it,  i always got the brunt end of it.  ”     he responded when she acknowledged him.   with his grades only being average,  soggy had learned that the discussion his parents had during said   (  parent-teacher conference  )    was solely about his behavior in class.     behavior that was entertaining but apparently equally distracting,  and each time, a lecture would be given and an empty threat about losing his electronics for the rest of the school year if he kept it up.    “  you the parent or the teacher ?  ”    because she looks too young for both.      “  either way,  i think maintaining a healthy bond between parent and child includes neglecting aforementioned parent-teacher conference.  seriously,  that thing’s shit and i’m not just saying that -  well i am but,   take my word    for it.     i’m a trustworthy guy.  ”

caroline let out a light laugh, it seemed as though his parents meetings went much like her brothers and how lorelai’s often would go. it wasn’t that she would so much punish her daughter as she would just end up being extremely stressed by her daughter’s reaction. her daughter was very outspoken and extremely stubborn much like her father and always said she was taking away her fun. it made caroline feel bad. “i am the parent.. to a very chatty fourth grader.” she said with a small sigh, “it goes the same every time i go. i can’t help my kid likes to talk but she does all her work and is passing.. she just makes friends with everyone.. and i can’t relate. she’s too much like her dad.”

he hadn’t meant to be listening . tipping the can of his monster energy drink back , in order to hunt down every last possible drop . it was needed to make it through his next shift ; double birthday parties . the pain staking torture of screaming children in the bowling lanes . clean ups of orange soda and dropped slices of pepperoni pie . but when the woman ends her call , eyes shoot in her direction , adding in his two cents . ❝  parent teacher things are the worst . do yourself a favor and just don’t go . my parents never went to mine , and i turned out okay . ❞  a lie . perhaps being held back two grade years could have been avoided if they had .

“i think you might be onto something..” caroline said with a sigh, “it’s always the same thing. ‘lorelai is an excellent student but she talks too much.’” caroline rolled her eyes at the statement. “i mean school is almost out... do you think it’ll really hurt if i don’t go to this one? i mean next year she’ll have a completely different teacher that i can dodge... and you look like you’re fine?”

“then again i don’t know if i can deal with being dubbed the mom who doesn’t participate.. dammit.”

“you know, if you really didn’t want to go, you could have just asked me to show up,” wes hummed, slinging an arm lazily around his sister’s shoulders, leaning against her as his nose scrunched up. “you can even still use that work excuse, too. just tell them you got called away for work so you sent me instead of making them reschedule.” he wiggled his eyebrows at her playfully. “hell, i can probably put on the charm enough to make bug’s teacher want me to be the one to show up for the next one.”

caroline raised a brow at her brother. as if to say you already know what i’m going to say to this... but she let him continue. “do you hear yourself when you talk or...?” she asked, letting out a small laugh. some things never changed with wes and for that she was grateful but sometimes she couldn’t help but laugh at him. “i don’t think lorelei needs to sit through all of that.” she corrected him knowing it would fall flat since he gave her daughter the nickname since birth.

jaden wasn’t often one to eavesdrop , but he couldn’t seem to help overhearing such a phone conversation — the male remembered his own parent-teacher conferences , where hilary and ashwin were warned that their only son was preoccupied more on entertaining the class than engaging with it . that was him , the class clown ; in his adulthood , not much had changed . a finger to his lips , he responded : “ your secret is safe with me . is it really that bad ?? my daughter is only six months old , but i can’t say i’m looking forward to those moments . if she’s anything like me , i’m expecting questionable feedback . “

caroline let out a light chuckle. she missed the days of her daughter being small. it was nice not having to deal with all the extras of school and what have you. but, it was also nice her daughter could make her own snacks now. there was a certain balance. “six months? you have plenty of time to practice.” 

“i think my daughter is just too much like her father... or maybe my brother.” caroline said with a light laugh. “either way she doesn’t get it from me.”

“oh no. i totally forgot about the parent-teacher conference and got called into work.” caroline spoke into her cellphone as she stood in the middle of the sidewalk, “i’m so sorry. we had a couple people call out today... mhmm... yup... sure! same time next week... i won’t forget then... right, right.. sorry again.” she said before hanging up and pulling a face at her phone. 

when she looked up she noticed someone standing next to her. “i won’t tell if you don’t. those parent-teacher conferences can be brutal!”
