Imagine Emma singing this to Adrien the day after the 20th anniversary. Just the two of them alone. ✿Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ✿

Adrien holds it together fairly well. It’s been 20 years and the pain hasn’t gone away but it’s not fresh. It’s a dull ache. A soft longing now. He knows it’s possible to survive without his lady alive by his side. Even if the acceptance of such is painful.

And he’d made it through yesterday perfectly. No tears tracing too familiar lines down his face. No avoiding the truth, locked away from the whole world in his room, while Emma visits her grave alone. No passing out in the middle of the living room surrounded by liquid luck. Having to be dragged over to the couch by his crying daughter, still too young to understand why. No.

He’d been at peace yesterday when the three of them had shared a meal together. A weird combination of croissants, chocolate chip cookies, and soft cheese. The cookies and croissants his daughter made tasted almost like the ones his princess had made for him all those years ago. He had pretended the two of them had baked them together just before he’d woken up that morning, as he ate one with his eyes closed.

The two of them had smiled fondly at the display of bright flowers and delicious food upon her grave as they left to return home.

Today though as he sat beside his daughter on their porch there was an air of melancholy. The rays of sunshine across their skin was warm and inviting but neither could enjoy it on this day. Thoughts were too muddled to enjoy the weather today. A week from now Emma would be leaving Paris to go her dream university. And Adrien didn’t think he’d be able to handle living in the house alone even after all these years.

Then Emma started singing that song. She started softly at first and restarted twice before deciding to finally commit to it. By the fourth start her voice rang out clear and the melody flowed around them both. Adrien’s breath caught in his throat as he processed the words being sung. And he was trying so hard not to cry. But his throat started burning and aching as the words kept flowing. And he felt the prickling sensations at the corners of his eyes that had been absent yesterday. And when their daughter’s voice started hitching in between too young and understand, in the way that he remembered his lady’s would when she was holding back a sob, his breathing came out in uneven puffs. And his vision started blurring as pictures of his princess sleeping in her casket flashed unbidden and unwanted into his mind. And then his cheeks started burning and his lips tasted a saltwatery kiss. Soft and wet and full of need like Marinette’s kisses. And then he was full out sobbing in his daughter’s arms. And Emma had given up trying to hold everything back in favour of mixing her own broken sobs with his. And the only thing he could think of were his favourite memories of Marinette and how unfair the world could be as they held each other closer.

This is the song Adrien listens to almost every day after Marinette’s death. Helping him cry himself to sleep for the first two years. And becoming an ache-filled lullaby after the fifth.
