It is a foul bauble of man's vanity. (artzine)
@minaharkerdailymirror
He hadn't intended to linger long but he had heard a call that he couldn't turn away from. Vlad didn't appreciate all of his abilities to the same degree but the ability to enter into another's dreams was one that had proven exceptionally useful over time. He wasn't surprised when he arrived at the window and saw who it was who was crying out in her dreams. It had been an unfortunate incident, what had happened to the girl's father. It would have been avoidable if he had been anywhere else, but he had been determined that he would shake truth from the world itself. Vlad admired that. It was a good quality, and it was one that he placed highly in his esteem. It had been a kindness to return the body, the sort of kindness that he did not extend often. It was harder and harder to do so with every decade that passed, as though he were being poisoned further by the disease that had ruined him and rebuilt him into a monster.
He moved up to the roof, just above her window, sitting as though he were a man at leisure rather than a demon who existed on blood. His eyes drifted closed and Vlad let his consciousness extend downwards, skittering along the wall and down through the window, crawling towards the bed and reaching up, tendrils of shadow gently caressing her temples.
The dreamscape was a garden and a beautiful garden at that. The trees were full of fruit, ripe and ready for the plucking. He casually reached up and took hold of one of the fruits, his nails puncturing the fragile skin, the blood red juices bursting forth. It was an elegant touch.
She sat on the bench, and Vlad approached, extending the fruit to her. "I have heard this orchard produces the best quality fruit in England. Is that true?" He asked, smiling easily at her, infusing as much warmth as he could into the words.
Mina thought that the orchard had been small when she was child. But she supposed she was wrong. It seemed to go on for miles and miles. There was no end to it.
"Well, I don't know," she said, "I've not been to many orchards. These are my uncles apples. I suppose you would think I have a preference, sir. I would not trust me to be unbiased."
"You are mistaken," she said, embracing the ignorant bliss of delusion thanks to the comforts of the dream, "It is wrong, he is coming home soon. And everything will be as it was. "
"I care not for bias. You are far more of an expert in this than I am. Taste is subjective of course, but it is your opinion I want more than anything else." He explained, his voice still light and conversational. He was the very image of a gentleman as he spoke to her, masquerading as the man he could be when it suited him. She would have no idea of his true nature unless he chose to reveal it to her. He was rather enjoying this change of pace however, so he would continue to indulge in this play acting; for now.
"There are few things in this world that will never change. Change can be a good thing. Is it not good when the winter snow's recede and the buds begin to bloom? Pray tell, what is your favourite season?"
"apples are apples to me," she shrugged and found a knife in her hand that she couldn't remember had been there beforehand or not, "Though I suppose the ones here are the best sort of apple in that they're free to have."
In springtime the orchards bloomed and Mina and the other children of the family ran through them and ate their fill. They climbed the trees and practiced jumping out of them. Sometimes it was a fall. Oftentimes her mother scolded her because a lady should have both feet planted firmly on the ground but how else was Mina to launch apples at Bram's idiot head if she couldn't climb first?
She peeled parts of the apple and bit into it with a satisfying crunch though she couldn't taste anything. That was disappointing.
"Spring I suppose. The world comes alive but it's not too hot yet. It just rains and rains. Though...I suppose it's always to rain here in this place."
She watched him, "Are you waiting for someone?"
Her attitude was almost entirely encapsulated by the statement that apples were apples. Vlad knew that if she had lived as he had lived, she would not have been so dismissive. She would have learned to treasure all of these small things that were far beyond her reach. Apples would never be apples to him again. They would always be a reminder of what he had lost, and of the temptation that had led him to that loss.
"They are fruit of the land you can feel beneath your feet. A beautiful expression of nature so close to your being, and of life. Do you recall the significance of the apple in our modern parlance?"
He hummed in acknowledgement of her choice of Spring. One of the more milder seasons. The season where the snow slowly began to melt and flooded the rivers, where the flowers began to swell and force themselves through the slowly yielding soil that had acted as guard and oppressor for the months of winter. It was not Vlad's preferred choice but he could see the appeal.
"I always favoured Autumn myself. In my country, it is truly beautiful. Countless artists have tried to capture the colours of the leaves and yet their works are always pale imitations."
He glanced around, as though he was indeed looking for someone. He was not. He had who he wanted right beside him. "Perhaps."

PROMPTS FROM THE MUSKETEERS: MILADY (2023) (adjust as needed)
Sometimes it’s difficult to do your duty but it’s never as difficult as not doing it.
I can make you a rich man or a dead man
If they come back, I’ll need you alive.
Both sides want war. Only the king wants peace.
Where we are, death is too.
Promise you’ll come back. Promise me!
Aren’t you expected somewhere? ai thought there was a war.
The man you entrusted your destiny to is not the man you think he is.
Promise me that every day, you’ll guard your life.
My honor is the battlefield.
Sorrows and pleasures are only temporary
You leave me no choice, it is either the altar or a duel
There is no great love without great proof of love
What crime did I commit other than loving you?
Don’t look at me with those eyes
I don’t wish a life like mine on you or any woman
They’ve taken everything from me. I have nothing more to lose.
My life has been their life. My death will be my death.
Tomorrow you’ll do what your heart tells you to do.
Who blames me if not your imagination?
Take time to weep.
Your heart is full of love, youth, and life.
Vlad's lips twitched and he made a sound of approval from deep within his chest when she leaned into his touch. This was the life he had promised her, and he was pleased to see that she enjoyed this aspect of it at least.
"You have never thrown a party like this one, I can assure you. The colour and theme, well, I don't decide that. I leave that to you and Lydia. She is delighted to have someone else to assist her. I simply do as I am bid." There was warmth in his voice, an undeniable fondness, as he recalled how excited Lydia had been when he had told her.
"Who will be in attendance?"
Lucy had been well versed in good manners and all things polite society. She had, on numerous occasions, dined with the highest of ranks within English society.
Vlad was not English, though. He had lived for a long, long while. The idea of what kind of guest piqued her interest.
"Will they be vampires or..."
"Old friends, not all of them as we are." It was all that Vlad was willing to offer. He wanted there to be some element of mystery and wonder left for Lucy, but it was important she knew that they were not all vampires. Besides, he did not know exactly who had been invited this year and who had been snubbed. He had long since abandoned writing and issuing the invitations, preferring to use his time to further his academic pursuits.
"Does this please you? Is it not what the other English ladies would do for their paramours?"

Quite the stranger, aren't you? I wondered what happened to you.
I can't really stand here wasting my time with you again.
Oh, of course, what a fool I am.
I thought something must have been wrong when you didn't come.
I hardly know [her/him/them] at all..
I want to remember this, always, to the end of my days.
Nothing lasts really, neither happiness nor despair.
I wish you'd stop talking, and prying.. trying to find things out.
This can't last, this shouldn't last.
There'll be the time in the future when I won't think about this anymore.
Alright, have it your own way!
There's so much that I want to say to you, but I can't.
You're the only person in the world that I can never tell my feelings.
Oh, I don't want you to be hurt..
This is my whole world, it should be enough, until I found you.
I've fallen in love... I didn't think such violent things could happen to me.
It didn't mean anything at all to me, at least, I didn't think it did.
It all seemed so natural, so innocent, but it wasn't for you...
Why should either of us feel guilty for liking each other?
Shall I see you again, if there is another tomorrow?
At that moment, I thought I had made up my mind... that I shouldn't see you anymore.
It was silly, and undignified.. to flirt like that with you.
I'd been behaving like an idiot, but you know, maybe, no harm had been done.
Do you remember how we spent the whole evening planning our future together before?
What do you mean, "What about us?"
I'm an idiot, worrying myself about things that don't exist..
You should be ashamed of yourself for doing this!
Come on, please, there is love between us...
Please, don't say anything anymore.
I'm glad that I had a chance to explain, I didn't think I'd see you again.
Why do you act like we are committing a crime for loving each other?
I was enjoying myself every single minutes. But you didn't, didn't you?
Oh, we had so much fun, happy and sort of released.. That's what's so shameful about it, right?
You know what's happened, don't you? I've fallen in love with you.
Please tell me honestly if what I believe is true..
It's too late to forget what we've said, whether we'd said it or not.
How long did you decide that you were never going to see me again?
It's no use pretending that it hasn't happened, because it has.
Neither of us are free to love each other.. there is too much in the way.
It seems like an eternity ago..
I saw us travelling together, I've always longed to go away.
How weird it is not to notice that I was living with a stranger in my own house.
I know exactly what you're going to say, that this isn't worth it..
It is true for you as it is for me, isn't it?
Explanations are unnecessary, particularly between friends.
I know it was stupid to run, but I couldn't help myself. I just feel.. so humiliated.
You're always been kind to me.. I feel sorry for you.
I can't leave you like this, you're being cruel to yourself.
We know we love each other. It isn't all that matters?
I know that this is the beginning of the end… not the end of my loving.
A sudden break now would be too cruel, we can't do such violence to our hearts..
I couldn't bear the thought of leaving you alone.
I don't think I'm anything, really. I just feel tired.
Forgive me, for meeting you in the first place, for loving you, and bringing you so much misery.
Do you think we shall ever see each other again?
I love you with all my heart and soul. If only I could die.
It was cruel of fate to be against us right up to the very last minute.
Whatever your dream was, it wasn't a very happy one, was it?
You've been a long way away. Thank you for coming back to me.
It seems that people most affected by Dracula, for a time, cannot speak freely. Renfield basically tries to spell that out while begging to be taken away from this asylum, but he says he is not "my own master on the matter" and cannot say that if he stays, he will let Dracula inside. Lucy also seemed unable to speak freely to Mina or Arthur, and arguably the same could be said about the Transylvanians, who would try to prevent Jonathan from going, but were not be able to tell him why. Try as they all might. And Renfield really really tried.
Dracula is meant to be an unspeakable monster and that's the key word in this sentence. Silence is a very effective tool and silence can be used as a form of oppression too.
