I sit with my grief. I mother it. I hold its small, hot hand. I don’t say, shhh. I don’t say, it’s okay. I wait until it is done having feelings. Then we stand and we go wash the dishes.

autistic self diagnosis is valid
a person: i’m autistic. i don’t have a professional diagnosis.
a neurotypical: you can’t! self diagnose! autism!!! onLy a dOctor can do that!!!
most doctors: don’t know what autism looks like in people other than nonverbal white cis boys
most doctors: recommend abusive therapies for autistic kids and teens
most doctors who specialize in diagnosing autism: refuse to evaluate adults
an autism evaluation for a minor teen who wants one: requires having supportive parents who understand that autism is not a tragedy and looks different for every autistic person, and that many autistic people can talk, have friends, do okay in school, and otherwise fake looking neurotypical
an autism evaluation for an adult: very expensive and often not covered by insurance in the U.S., also extremely difficult to get in France
an on-record autism diagnosis: can be used to deny you custody of children, to have your kids taken away, to forcibly institutionalize you
autism advocacy orgs that actually help autistic ppl like ASAN, AWN, AANE: Here are some resources for figuring out if you could be autistic. Professional diagnosis is a very personal decision and is not required for knowing that you’re one of us. We support you as an autistic person even if you don’t have a paper diagnosis.
a sincere autism self diagnosis: harms no one even if it’s incorrect, enables the person to feel part of a community of people with similar issues and learn more about autism, a gateway to learning about autism acceptance movements, often the first step toward self acceptance and self esteem
My only issue with self-diagnosing autism is that I’ve personally encountered someone who used it as an excuse to be an asshole.
Whenever someone else called her out on her behavior, she claimed “oh, I’m autistic, I can’t read social cues well.” On the other hand, she was very (read: VERY) sensitive and expected everyone to treat her with velvet gloves.
in my experience in autistic communities, people who use autism as an excuse to be an oppressive asshole are almost always diagnosed. wrongplanet is full of white cis het dudes who defend their shitty behavior with “I’m autistic and have no empathy, and that’s why i think that you’re being a hypersensitive sjw for telling me not to use slurs.”
if someone’s using their autism as an excuse to knowingly hurt other people, it doesn’t mean that they’re not autistic. it just means that they’re an asshole.
“One person I knew was an asshole and hid behind a label once, therefore I’m going to ignore all these other perfectly valid reasons someone might self-diagnose and Take Issue with it” is… not a good look. Also, add Canada to the list of places where adult diagnosis is expensive and uncovered. That’s right, here in the land of Filthy Socialist Medicine and Universal Single-Payer, it would cost me $2000 to have what I already know added to a file so it can endanger my relationship with my kid. Fortunately, local autism networks strongly support self-diagnosis.
Also even if they end up not being autistic if they identified enough with the symptoms that they felt the label fit then them using autistic resources isn’t hurting anyone and is probably helping them more than neurotypical resources
Something vital I wish I could convey to the anti-self-dx community: Mental health and treatment isn’t really about “are you X? Do you have X?” It’s about “Does this approach for managing X work for you?” I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Mental illnesses and disabilities aren’t Real Things out there in the world. They’re just convenient labels for clusters of malfunctions that occur together. We honestly don’t know enough about the brain to be able to distinguish Real Actual Differences; symptom clustering is about the best we have. And there are edge cases for almost every rule. So in the end, it doesn’t matter if you Really Truly Have The Thing because The Thing is an illusion. What matters is do Thing-Related Approaches work for you?

See, this? THIS is how you joke on “Thor being dumb”. It’s not that he’s actually DUMB, it’s that he’s ignorant to a lot of Earth things because he’s not FROM here, but also he’s a confident extrovert who’s going to act like he DOES know what he’s doing.
