Bricolage 

After our conversation about bricolage. I immediately thought about Pinterest. It is like an entire site full of appropriation and do-it-yourselfs. We may have talked about punks but I always like to take what we’ve learned and relate it to my own taste. In recent years something I have noticed that has constantly been reappropriated is the mason jar. It is something that many people have taken and made their own. It has made a statement. 

This is just one example but the DIY world has been booming lately and it is the perfect example of bricolage because a lot of the time, it is taking things from a bunch of items and bringing it together. DIY’s are one of my favourite things, I love seeing the way that people take things and change them to make it their own. Or use everyday items to create an item that would regularly be very expensive.

The mason jar has become an interesting artifact. On my dash, I showed them being stood on wine glass bottoms. This shows that all tastes can be completely omnivorous when reappropriated.

Oprah You Get a Car

Oprah You Get a Car is a series of video remixes and advice animal image macros parodying an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Every time I see this in a class, I love it. The pandering to those in need makes it middle-class or middle-brow. It is accessible. It also became re-appropriated into a meme. So regardless of its intention, it has become middle or low-brow, as memes are open for interpretation and modification by the public. It’s unfortunate I can’t recall off the top of my head any high-brow artifacts becoming memes.

As we mentioned in class Louboutins are an example of inconspicuous consumption, most people can see the red heels and have no idea what type of shoe that is. But those who are in the same financial bracket know that the red soles are a trade mark of the designer brands and the heels would be a minimum of a thousand dollars a pair.

spending on average between $100-$300 on a pair of sunglasses because they have a logo on it is a great example of conspicuous consumption, people want others to see that they have spent a certain amount of money on something so unnecessary as a sign of status. With the logo placed on the sunglasses it is clear for anyone to know that they were most likely more expensive, thus the person has to have money.

When we talked about camp in class we discussed Madonna as being a prime example of feminist camp. She pushed boundaries and set new norms. She did things that people found different and was changing the music industry with her image. However nowadays I look at lady gaga as the modern day Madonna. Lady gaga has created buzz around her image with her songs, her image and how she dresses. She has been seen in outfits as seen above and even an outfit made out of meat. If that isn’t pushing boundaries I don’t know what is. She doesn’t care what people think of her and wants to change the music industry for the better. She doesn’t want people to judge her by her outfits but more so accept her.

I have to agree with Tish. The emergence of Instagram has led to a majority of the posts on instagrams being posts of people’s meals. I admit I snap a pic after I cook a damn good meal. Does this make me a foodie? Probably not but it is something that a foodie might do. I think what would make me more of a foodie is that fact that the pictures I am posting are meals I have made. Therefore I took the time to cook and experiment with different recipes and flavours.

Could not agree more. Why do I feel the need to share my meals with other people? I know I hate when other people post their food but when I sit down to a great plate of food that has an aesthetic appeal too my first instinct is to document a picture of it and share it with all my friends. I guess as we learnt a major part of being a foodie is talking about it so that would mean we are all somewhat foodies.

When I think of a man wowho places particular importance upon physical appearance, refined language, and leisurely hobbies, I immediately think of Scott Disick. He is always one step ahead with fashion and he uses his wardrobe as a great tool to show his status.

I have to agree with Amy in this post. I fell more and more movies are movies that we can watch passively and follow along easily such as romantic comedies and action films. They are purely entertainment to the viewer. Where as smart films require we to pay attention and focus on what is happening because they aren’t easily predictable. Later movies were like this as mentioned Donnie darko and American beauty however the only more recent movie that I have seen and would consider a smart film is Inception. That movie was a trip and a half and required you to pay attention with its plot twists and turns.

Was it just me or when reading Dylan Clark's article on punk cuisine did I immediately associate it with hipsters today? I felt like they shared a lot of similar characteristics, rebelling from commodification of just about anything and focusing on pure foods. I found the descriptions of each subculture very similar, distancing themselves from mainstream media. Though many hipsters these day are also self proclaimed foodies who feel the need to instagram or post every organic and pure meal they indulge in@
