“Not your fault.” Fitz conceded, shrugging his shoulders. Neither was his terrible mood, even if he tried his hardest to blame it on anyone but the missing woman in his life. “Ah, there I can help you out. Best at that. Can I interest you in a funny monkey video or a toddler trying to copy complex mathematical equations on the wall? I’ve got both.” he chuckled, taking his phone out of his pocket to show Alya trying to copy an equation he had wrote on the white board onto their living room wall. 

Cassie shrugged too. She knew how stress could make people act out against others; she wasn’t completely innocent of it in her life. “Oh, definitely gonna go with the toddler trying to do mathematical equations.” Cassie loved shit like that. Her mom had told her of how when she was a kid, she used to try and copy her dad all the time. She peered at the photo and laughed softly. “Love it. Smart kid.”

“Right? Exactly. You get me.” At least someone around here did. She was glad Cassie was here. America was around too, but Cassie and Kate had become Young Avengers around the same time. “Ugh, it was just a police officer, which honestly shouldn’t bother me that much, but I wish they’d just listen.”

“Of course.” Cassie would always support Kate, she was one of her closest friends. And they were teammates, she trusted Kate with her life. “Ugh, really? Maybe if they listened to you for once, they’d actually solve shit faster. There’s a reason people hire you.”

“I probably should have walked away.” Of course, that was not what she did. I wrapped his car around a pole. It was what she wanted to say. He’s lucky he wasn’t in it. Instead, Lorna said. “Karma got him, someone fucked with his car.” A delighted look on her face at the words. “Funny how things work.”

Cassie rolled her eyes. Of course Lorna should’ve walked away, but Cassie knew that personally she never would and the idea that Lorna should was frustrating. But she laughed when apparently karma fucked with this guy’s car. “Did you go full Carrie Underwood on him or is he such a dick that someone else already did?”

he  knows  how  tempting  it  is  to  want  to  solve  problems  with  your  fists.  the  guy’s  a  loud-mouth,  going  on  and  on  about  how  the  registration  act  should  have  never  been  overturned  and  how  they’re  not  safeas  a  society  by  being  forced  to  live  among  them.  but  he’s  alone.  his  words  are  hateful,  but  no  one’s  standing  around  and  agreeing.  it’s  …  relatively  harmless.   ANNOYING,  but  harmless.  considering  he’s  staging  his  little  one-man  protest  a  few  miles  from  a  known  avengers  hot-spot,  he’s  really  tempting  fate.   though,  bucky  wonders,  if  maybe  that  wasn’t  part  of  his  intention.   “  freedom  of  speech  protects  him.  as  soon  as  we  react,  the  story’s  not  about  what  he  was  saying  but  how  we  reacted. ”   he  knows  that  better  than  anyone.   “  we’re  better  off  just  ignoring  him. ”

Cassie still hadn’t taken her eyes off the man loudly trying to get people on his side--like one of those people who stood on street corners preaching. But instead of decrying the lack of faith, he was spewing hatred on the very people Cassie had grown up with. Admired, learnt from, called family. She clenched her jaw and turned away, finally heeding Bucky’s words. “I know,” she grumbled. “But what if it’s not Stature, it’s just me telling him where to shove it. Freedom of speech protects him from the government, not the Cassie.”

Once he ensured his daughter was still sleeping, he looked up at the woman. Now he was yelling at almost children. He could blame it on him being over-tired. Ever since Daisy was taken, Alya hadn’t wanted to sleep for any of them. It was making them both grouchy. “It doesn’t help that her favorite aunt hasn’t been around to help her.” he sighed, looking towards the empty seat across from him and gesturing, “Can I buy you off with a tea or coffee for my shit attitude? Convince you not to somehow sense my wife and tell her how awful I am?” that was mostly a joke, but he knew Jemma also had a second sense for things like this. 

Cassie smiled sympathetically. “That sucks. I’m sorry.” Something about the way he says it makes her feel like it’s more serious than the aunt just being away somewhere, so she doesn’t pry. It’s none of her business. She laughed quietly. “I mean, you don’t have to, but I won’t say no to a coffee. Or a distraction from my work.” She reached back and grabbed the tablet from the table she’d been at. “I can definitely be bribed into not saying anything.”

if  she  was  hoping  to  come  to  the  guy’s  rescue,  she’s  missed  the  mark  on  that  one.   he  straightens,  looking  down  at  the  man’s  unconscious  body  with  a  shrug.  he  can’t  feel  badly  about  it,  really;   the  guy  was  a  drug-dealer,  caught  lingering  outside  of  an  elementary  school  almost  every  day  this  week.   he  know  he’s  not  perfect  but  even  hehas  his  limits.   he  doesn’t  regret  knocking  the  guy  out.   not  one  bit. “  —  but  did  he  die  ? ”   his  answer  is  dismissive,  tongue  in  cheek  as  he  snickers.   “ no.  he’ll  SURVIVE.   it’s  more  than  he  deserves  and  sends  an  effective  message. ”

Scenes like this weren’t always what they appeared, she knew that. Hell, she’d been in a few of them herself. That didn’t mean she didn’t want to know. Cassie couldn’t help the snort at the young man’s retort, even as she folded her arms across her chest in a way that said she wasn’t moving until she had more answers than but did he die?. She’d block his way if she had to. Clearly the young man was good in a fight, but Cassie had grown up with heroes. “An effective message to... who exactly?” she asked. “What’d he do?” Even as she asked, Cassie was scanning the scene, looking for signs as to what had gone down here. For why the fight had gone down.

Cassie itched to move, held back only momentarily by Bucky’s careful warning. “I’ve never really been good at doing nothing, you know?” she mused, eyes still directly on target. Perhaps target was a strong word. Loud mouthed asshole was a bit more accurate. “History could... Or, I could do it right now.”

“No, you’re not.” Cassie frowned, looking up from the couch. She shifted, to better face Lorna, intrigued. “Why did he do that? And what did you do? Afterwards, I mean. Because quite frankly...” Cassie shook her head. “Please tell me he didn’t get away with it.”

Cassie snorted. “Well that’s his loss, isn’t it? You could run rings around most people without even breaking a sweat.” Cassie admired Kate, and trusted her implicitly as a leader. So anyone who thought she was stupid clearly didn’t know her. “Who even was this?”

he  hits  the  ground  hard,  helmet  scraping  against  the  pavement  as  he  goes.  it’s  fine  though,  even  as  he  tastes  blood  and  sees  his  vision  swim.  it  would  take  more  than  a  minor  head  injury  to  keep  him  down.  a  kick  to  the  solar-plexus,  followed  by  a  leg-chokehold  that  he  absolutelylearned  by  watching  the  black  widow  do  it  on  a  grainy  youtube  video,  keeps  his  assailant  down  for  the  count.  easy  peasy,  lemon  squeasy.   he  takes  the  helmet  off  so  he  can  spit  blood,  running  his  tongue  along  the  inside  of  his  mouth;  he  must  have  bitten  it  when  he  went  down  the  first  time.   or  maybe  the  second  time.    it’s  not  like  he  was  counting.   

he  hears  gravel  crunching  behind  him  but  he  makes  no  move  to  put  his  helmet  back  on.  tucked  under  his  arm,  weapons  concealed,  you’d  only  see  him  as  the  red  hood  if  you  knew  what  you  were  looking  for.    &   if  they  recognized  JASON?   it’s been  months.   maybe  it’s  time  he  threw  himself  a  ‘ welcome  back  from  the  dead ’  party.    “  i’ll  save  you  some  trouble. ”   he  chirps,  turning  towards  the  newcomer.   “  i’m  fine,  he’s  fine,  and  you  have  impeccable  timing. ”   @thephoenixstart​

She wasn’t dressed as Stature, just Cassie, but when she’d heard the unmistakable sounds of a fight, she’d come running. Act first, think later. Her mother was always worrying about Cassie doing that, worried sick it would lead to her getting hurt or worse. But by the time she arrived, the fight was over. 

“Oh yeah,” she replied, looking over the unconscious man and the young man who she’d just seen spit blood onto the ground. “Seems fine alright.”

There’s a laptop in front of Fitz, cup of tea settled next to it that remains untouched for the moment. Alya is asleep in her stroller next to him, but he still stops to make sure she’s sleeping soundly before he turns back to the laptop. Security feeds from from the streets are cycling through. The programs he’s running are filtering for Daisy’s face, but it’s not yielding the results he’s hoping. He sighs, reaching over to take a sip of his tea as someone jolts his daughter’s stroller. It’s not enough to make his little monkey wake up, but it does make him turn, frowning, “Hey! Do you know how long it takes to get a toddler to nap?”

Cassie had a tablet with reports she was meant to be reading and a notebook in front of her, but she wasn’t really paying it any attention. There was only so long she could do her assignments before she got distracted. Somehow she’d ended up on her phone, scrolling through news reports and sending texts. And she’s not really paying attention as she gets up to get water, unfortunately bumping to a nearby stroller. “Oh sh--shoot.” Cassie glanced down at the toddler, glad to see she wasn’t awake. “Sorry. I, uh, do actually. Some of them take forever.” Cassie had babysat her fair share of toddlers to earn money. “But they almost always have some kind of preference for it.”
